The fonds consists of records spanning the period 1955-2013 that reflect Blanche Howard’s literary career, political interests, professional and volunteer work, as well as her personal and family life. Records related to Howard’s literary career include incoming and outgoing correspondence with publishers, agents, friends and family, colleagues and fellow writers, among others; literary works, including novels, short stories, essays, articles, book reviews, speeches, and plays in various editorial and publication stages; notes, outlines, and proposals; research materials; grant applications; contracts and royalty or revenue statements; biographical, publicity, and promotional materials; photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera; and other materials. Records related to Howard’s political interests and professional and volunteer work include correspondence with Iona Campangola, Capilano College, and members of The Writers' Union of Canada, among others; Vanier Institute of the Family correspondence and board meeting minutes; Moodyville Theatre correspondence, meeting minutes, and financial records; and other materials. Records related Howard’s personal and family life include photographs of Howard’s family, as well as photographs of Bruce Howard during his political career; personal ephemera; correspondence, including with writer and friend Carol Shields; and other materials.

Literary work

The Literary work sous-fonds consists of a variety of Blanche Howard' s writings, such as typescript and computer generated manuscripts of published, unpublished and abandoned novels, essays, short stories (most include hand-written annotations), and research material. In addition, the sous-fonds contains a newspaper column and letters-to-the-editor written for various newspapers in the Okanagan, Vancouver and Ottawa. The sous-fond contains newsprint and photocopies of newspaper clippings of Howard's column, and her various letters-to-the-editor. The sous-fonds also accommodates book reviews written by Howard, speeches written for herself and others and a single play, "A Celibate Season"). Most of the series contain correspondence with publishers. The sousfonds is comprised of the following series : Novels and Plays, Associated Material, Short stores and Essays and Non-fiction series, as well as the single play, "A Celibate Season" (Play).

Literary work and related materials

The series consists of material related to Blanche Howard’s writing career between 1968-2013. Materials include Howard’s fiction and non-fiction writings in various editorial and publication stages; correspondence regarding and related to her writing projects; contracts, agreements, and royalty or revenue statements; biographical, publicity, and promotional materials; research materials; notes and various collected ephemera. Writings include primarily typed and computer-generated manuscripts of novels and short stories; scripts of plays; and texts of non-fiction writings, including political articles written during Bruce Howard’s tenure as a Member of Parliament, letters-to-the-editor of newspapers in Ontario and British Columbia, and various essays and speeches. Many of these writings include hand-written annotations. Also included are project proposals, publications proofs, clippings or photocopies of published works, as well as outlines and notes regarding characters, plot, structure, and more. Correspondence in the series consists of email and traditional correspondence regarding writing projects between Howard and numerous publishers, editors, and theatre companies; literary agents; awards committees; and colleagues, friends, and family, among others. This correspondence includes letters accompanying manuscript submissions; acceptance and rejection letters; correspondence regarding permissions and publication; and endorsements and comments, among other correspondence. Biographical, publicity, and promotional materials include biographies and curricula vitae; printouts of online reviews; newspaper and magazine clippings; texts of remarks delivered during promotional talks or reading events; reader’s guides; and press releases, and other materials. Various collected ephemera includes clippings and other materials used for background research, flyers, play programs, certificates of appreciation, book catalogues, course brochures, literary competition guidelines, and photographs.

In addition to the records directly related to Howard’s writing career, the series also contains records related to more tangential or personal activities, such as her participation in a book club or her adjudication of the 2010 Saskatchewan Book Awards.

Correspondence with Carol Shields

The subseries consists of email and traditional correspondence between Blanche Howard and Carol Shields, as well as related correspondence and ephemera from 1974-2006. The correspondence between Howard and Shields deals with subjects such as the respective writing careers of the correspondents, literature, and personal and family goings-on. The subseries also contains correspondence between Howard and other members of the Shields family, including Carol’s husband Don Shields, and daughters Anne Giardini and Sara Cassidy. The subseries also contains correspondence between Carol Shields and Bruce Howard. The subseries also includes some correspondence related to the publication of the book “A Memoir of Friendship.” Ephemera in the subseries consists of newspaper and magazine clippings regarding Shields, including reviews, articles about awards and honours, and obituaries and tributes.

After 1990 - published short stories and essays

The subseries consists of material related to the writing and publication of short stories by Blanche Howard from 1987 to 2010. Material includes primarily typed drafts of stories, many edited or otherwise annotated by Howard and others, as well as correspondence regarding the stories, newspaper clippings and articles used for research, printing proofs, handwritten notes regarding characters, letters of agreement, and other related records. Correspondence consists primarily of email and traditional correspondence with editors, publishers, and literary agents, including rejection and acceptance letters, correspondence regarding royalties, reprint permissions, and awards, and correspondence containing feedback on the stories.

Unpublished short stories and essays

The subseries consists of material related to the writing and attempted publication of short stories by Blanche Howard from 1969 to 2011. Material includes primarily typed drafts of stories, many edited or otherwise annotated by Howard, as well as correspondence regarding the stories, newspaper clippings and articles used for research, notes, writing contest rules, and other related records. Correspondence consists of email and traditional correspondence with editors and publishers, primarily rejection letters and correspondence containing feedback on the stories.
