Inverness Cannery fonds

The fonds consists of records related to the operation of Inverness Cannery. Records span from the early 1900s all the way through to the 1950s when the cannery was closed and turned into a fish camp. The cannery was owned by J.H. Todd and Sons Ltd. from 1902-1950. The fonds is comprised of seven different series: Correspondence series, Financial series, Fish Canning series, Fish Catching series, Inverness Cannery School series, Legal series, and Publications, Pamphlets and News Clippings series.

[Provincial Bargaining Strategies conference records]

File contains materials relating to the Association of University and College Employees' Bargaining Strategies Conference, held February 5-7th, 1982, as well as several articles and copies of legislation. Topics discussed include collective agreements, negotiations, contract language, job evaluations, sexual harassment, wage increases, benefits, bargaining, information on court cases, the Capilano College Labour Studies Programme from Spring 1982, copies of the 1979 Labour Code, the Essential Services Disputes Act (1977), the Employment Standards Act (1980), an article by David C. McPhillips entitled "The Duty to Bargain in Good Faith," "Labour Law and Industrial Relations in Canada" by H.W. [Shop steward handbook and Travel Club newsletter]

File contains an AUCE/SORWUC shop steward handbook and AUCE travel club leaflets. Topics discussed in the handbook include rights and responsibilities of stewards, leaves from work, how to process grievances, arbitration, definitions, and a sample grievance form. Topics discussed in the newsletters include detailed information on tours and travel packages to Las Vegas, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, etc.

File contains AUCE incoming and outgoing correspondence dated March, 1987 to December 29, 1987. Topics include legal representation, membership and other meetings, collective agreement with UBC, employee benefits, temporary employees, severance and lay-offs, hiring and wages of disabled employees, vacation entitlement, sessional instructors, grievances with UBC, BC Federation of Labour Bill 19 Working Conference, CUPE National Defence Fund, BC New Democratic Party, and CUPE merger. Correspondence also contains CUE "Office Administration and Membership Servicing Report: Job Evaluation Report" (January 5, 1987).

[Local 1 Strike report and other material]

File contains strike reports and other records dated March 17, 1975 to April 14, 1975. Topics discussed include background leading up to the strike, setting up the strike such as picket locations and scheduling, finances, publicity, organization during the strike such as relations with other unions student support, an overview and summary of the 1975 strike, and recommendations. File also contains information on a CUPE strike, executive election candidate statements, a report on salary differences between men and women faculty members, correspondence, information on negotiations, contract proposals, picket bulletins, flyers, notes, and press releases.

File contains newsletters from the AUCE Provincial, and a financial statement.

AUCE Affiliation Bulletin (January 22, 1981) includes referendum results on whether AUCE members wish to affiliate with the Canadian Labour Council.

AUCE Provincial Dispatch no. 13 (November 27, 1980) includes by-election results, and the results of a special assessment which passed to provide financial assistance to Local 1.

AUCE Provincial News: Special Issue on Affiliation (December 1980) includes discussion and opinion pieces on the advantages and disadvantages of various ways to affiliate with the CLC.

Seventh Annual Provincial Convention (2 of 2)

File contains Local reports and other records dated June 18, 1980. Records include Local monthly reports from June 1979 to June 1980, Local annual reports to the 7th annual convention, a report from the British Columbia Students' Federation, reports from SORWUC, and reports from the Labour Advocacy and Research Association (LARA). Topics discussed include strikes, dues, negotiations, hiring, job descriptions, membership, student employment, communication, affiliation, supporting the SFU 18, union organizing, and labour standards for domestic and farm workers. File also contains copies of articles from the Province newspaper entitled "Home work down-graded" (March 10, 1978) and "They're slaves in the homes of the elite" (March 9, 1978)

[Local 1 Contract committee]

File contains bulletins, versions of a collective agreement, and news releases dated January 14, 1980 to April 11, 1980. Topics discussed include bargaining and negotiations, changes to the collective agreement, contract proposals, membership meetings, wages and inflation, the strike vote, and information on the strike.

Office log

File consists of the Union Organizer's handwritten office log, dated November 3rd, 1975 to November 17, 1976. The log documents the Organizer's duties and activities, including general administration and organization, phone calls, speaking to members, preparing reports, compiling arbitration cases, office renovation, peparing for membership meetings, writing newsletter articles, recordkeeping, and constructing an office manual.

File also contains correspondence, a Civil Engineering Department list, administrative instructions, reports written by the Organizer, meeting notes, committee membership lists and terms of reference, an executive membership list, and a library loan list.

File also contains "Strike Progress" material, documenting AUCE's strike activity and administration in December 1975. Records include activity logs, an official brief to UBC's Board of Governors, executive meeting minutes, a transcript of a meeting between AUCE and the BC Federation of Labour, and correspondence.

File contains incoming correspondence to Local 1, including letters from similar unions and organizations requesting donations and support, letters from members regarding union activity, letters from University of British Columbia personnel, and letters nominating individual members for executive positions. File contains annual provincial convention materials, dated March 30, 1980 to April 7, 1981. Across Campus Volume 1, Issue 2, May 22, 1973 includes information on the AUCE membership drive and certification by the Labor Relations Board, organization efforts in the library, retirement and pensions, setting up committees for grievances and communications, the CCU convention in Winnipeg, rumours of faculty joining a government employees union, new executive members, notice of membership meeting, an opinion poll on whether the AUCE should become an official union or not, a new SFU salary scale, and revision of Local 1 division structure.
