Biographical history
Joseph Collins Lawrence was born in Winnipeg and graduated with a BA from the University of British Columbia in 1951. He completed his MA at UBC in 1957. After serving as a teaching assistant at UCLA, he returned to UBC and joined the Department of History as an instructor, teaching until 1984. He also owned and operated a second-hand book store in Vancouver.

The fonds consists of both research notes relating to Lawrence's 1957 M.A. thesis Markets and capital: a history of the lumber industry of British Columbia (1778-1952); and later notes, clippings, and publications dealing with politics and the B.C. forest industry which were inter-filed with the thesis material.
