Administrative history

The Korean-Canadian Heritage Archives (KCHA) project was a collaborative project of the University of Toronto (U of T) Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Asian Library that aimed to preserve the history of the Korean-Canadian community's activities and its literary and artistic works. The primary goal of the project was to create a comprehensive database of the 65-year-long culture and history of the Korean-Canadian community. The secondary goals were to develop and strengthen the relationship among Korean communities in different regions and different generations, and to provide a wealth of information about the Korean-Canadian community to Korean-Canadians, Koreans, and non-Korean Canadians.

The aim of this project was to better document the Korean experience in Canada by physically collocating materials into one location, making the physical items accessible to the public, and digitizing the materials in order to create a nation-wide online searchable database of materials relating to Korean Canadian culture and history. The project aimed to collect not only catalogued material, but also aimed to acquire primary sources relating to Korean Canadians that are archival in nature. The scope of the project included any materials related to or created by Korean-Canadians.

Scope and content

RBSC's holdings of the Korean Canadian Heritage Archive consist of UBC's General Collection, which was one of the two sub-collections of UBC's portion of the KCHA. The creators of this collection divided the collection into nine series based on the physical formats of the materials. The series are as follows: Ephemera, Books, Grey Literature, Multimedia, Correspondence, Manuscripts, Newspaper Clippings, Serials, and Personal Documents.

Physical condition

Immediate source of acquisition

UBC's Asian Library was one of the two parties involved in creating the KCHA, alongside U of T's Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library. In July 2019, the Asian Library transferred all the materials they had physically acquired for the KCHA to Rare Books and Special Collections.

Arrangement

The archivist retained the original series system. Series-level scope and content notes have been provided by the KCHA's definitions of each series.
The archivist has also retained the original order of files within these series. Each file came to RBSC with its own original KCHA unique identifier, in the following format: KCHA-UBC-[series code]-[file number]. The archivist has assigned RBSC unique identifiers to each file, but has made a note of each file's original identifier. File titles have also been taken and occasionally adapted from the original file titles either supplied by the metadata of the digitized versions, or supplied by handwritten titles on file folders.

Associated materials

The KCHA consisted of two collections, one held by the University of British Columbia and the other held by the University of Toronto. The University of Toronto's collection is divided into two sub-collections: the Dr. Yu Collection and the General Collection. These collections have been digitized and are available online in the University of Toronto's KCHA database, located here: https://kcha.library.utoronto.ca/. Most of the items in the collection held by RBSC are also digitized and available in this database.

Some items have been removed from the Books series to be catalogued separately at the UBC Asian Library. See the series description for a full list of these items.
