Lemuel Fergus Robertson (1878-1956) was born in Prince Edward Island and received his BA (1899) and MA in Classics from McGill University. He came to Vancouver first in 1899 to teach at Vancouver College. He helped guide the evolution of that institution into McGill University College of BC. When the University of British Columbia opened in 1915, Robertson was a senior member of the Classics department and became head in 1920. Robertson was known for his paternalistic teaching approach when many undergraduates were still in their teens. He retired in 1941 and was awarded an honorary degree by UBC.
