Biographical history

Patrick O'Neal was the western regional organizer for the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers. Prior to his holding that position, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the B.C. Federation of Labour. In 1973 he became vice-president and director of Area XIV, United Paperworkers International Union. The International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers was a longstanding rival of the Pulp and Paper Workers of Canada, and O’Neal was well know to both.

Custodial history

The fonds was deposited with UBC Rare Books and Special Collections in 1977 by Patrick O'Neal, the son of the fonds' creator, also Patrick O'Neal.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of records pertaining to O’Neal’s work as a union organizer and representative, primarily, though not exclusively, for the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers. The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, memos, newspaper clippings and press releases, labour agreements and negotiation records, and CCF to NDP transition records. Unions represented in the fonds include the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers, the United Paper Workers International Union, and a number of B.C. locals, including Local 603, Local 612, and Local 695, among others.
