Collection consists of 56 documents which mostly concern Frederic Schiller Lee’s capabilities as a fundraiser for the International Physiological Conference in the eastern United States in 1929. The majority of the collection is letters from prominent physiologists.

The collection consists of eleven volumes of photocopied papers and microfilms of extracts of Italian and Latin manuscripts relating to the history of science, mainly from 17th century Florence. The collection includes extracts from the Galileo letters, the Strozzi collection and the Medici letters.

The fonds consists of correspondence between the ALGOL 68 working group members, drafts, working papers, and reports on the language. Fonds also contains a small number of the ALGOL Bulletin and a photo of the working group.

Fonds consists of 10 volumes of purchase requisitions from 1954 to 1958, and a central office correspondence series from 1955 to 1965. The correspondence is informally arranged within a classification system that was inconsistently applied and developed until 1964. Two reference sheets for the subject classification system remain for 1956 and 1963 and are included in the first file for each of those two years. Many of the headings reflect the categories used by the Department of Agronomy. Intermingled with the files of the division are some of the faculty papers of V.C. Brink, the chair of the division. In 1964, the entire system appears to have broken down. From 1964 to 1970 all the division correspondence files were stored in unlabelled file folders the vast majority of which exhibited no internal coherence. Because of the presence of Brink's faculty papers in the files, and because of the absence of the division's classification system, the records from 1964 to 1970 have been arranged and described with Brink's personal papers. For a complete understanding of the functions and activities of the division, these records must also be consulted.

The fonds of the Faculty of Medicine includes records which document the administrative and operational activities, actions and interests of the Faculty. Such records pertain to the establishment and organization of the Faculty; the development and actions of the Facultys governing bodies and committees; the planning, development and construction of various Faculty buildings such as the University Hospital, the I.R.C. Centre, the Basic Medical Sciences buildings and the Health Sciences Centre. These records also refer to the use of regional hospitals as clinical teaching hospitals and to relations between the Faculty and the University at large; as well as, with other university medical schools, governments, medical and related professions, associations and societies, businesses and hospitals. The records within this fonds also pertain to the Facultys receipt of gifts and donations, its departmental / divisional research endeavors and it applications for, and receipt of, awards for professional distinction. Types of material found in the Faculty of Medicine fonds include: correspondence, working papers, minutes, photographs, newspaper clippings, memorandum, agendas, studies, internal reports and reviews, applications, protocols and surveys. Fonds consists of records which reflect Brink's participation on the Environmental Assessment Panel (1973-1983) and The Nature Trust (1984-1987). The papers include material arranged in the following series: correspondence, teaching and research. The papers also include reference booklets and pamphlets. Each series is arranged in chronological order. The records primarily contain one large correspondence series from 1953 to 1975, with bulk dates of 1961 to 1971. The correspondence contains Brink's faculty papers intermingled with the Division of Plant Science's central office files.

The fonds consist of research material on various medical and historical topics and research for several of Gibson's books and articles, including his books about UBC's first president Frank F. Wesbrook, Ramon y Cajal Sherrington, and his books New Endeavour and Old Endeavour. In addition, the fonds include manuscripts of a number of Gibson articles and speeches and chapters from some of his books, records from Woodward Health Science centre, and documents for the history of the Faculty of medicine and related to Green College UBC and Oxford. Also included are records from the Agricultural Science Fund Committee (1967-1974), School of Rehabilitation Medicine (1953-1961), Master Teaching Awards Committee (1967-1972), minutes from the Council of the Faculty of Medicine (1950-1964), materials relating to Vancouver civic politics (1970-1984), and correspondence with Sir Frederick Dainton (1980-1983), Cecil Green, and Wilder Penfield among many others.

The fonds consists of records chronicling various facets of Howard's long career in mining-related activities. It includes material from his student days, his years at Eldorado Gold Mines, and his years as a professor at the University of British Columbia. The fonds includes photographs reflecting the development of mining equipment and technology. In particular, the numerous photographs from Howard's Eldorado days (1942-1946) depict not only mining operations but also capture aspects of social life in Port Radium, a remote community near the Arctic Circle.

Collection consists of letters from prominent scientists in various fields of study. Many of the letters in this collection are addressed to Dr. Chauncey D. Leake.

Some of the letters contain discussion of a scientific nature, while others contain pleasantries, invitations, and discussion of scientific publications for collecting purposes. Some of the notable correspondents include Sir Richard Owen, Sir Francis Galton, Joseph Dalton Hooker, William Jackson Hooker, Sir Frederick Grant Banting, Adam Sedgwick, and James Prescott Joule.

Fonds illustrates Frank Charnley's career and interests as a mathematician, sheep rancher, beekeeper and writer, as well as records relating to his family, predominately from his retirement years. Photographs showcase Charnley at his Barnston Island home, presumably in the 1960s. Fonds is organized into the following series: Correspondence; Mathematical notes; Creative writing; Beekeeping records; Sheep ranching records; Miscellaneous records; Photographs; University records; and Reports authored by Frank Charnley.

The collection illustrates Otto Cohnheim’s personal and professional life while he lived in Germany and Scotland. The personal material includes correspondence with or about family members while the professional material includes letters, laboratory notes, and papers to do with his physiological studies.

The fonds consist of correspondence, personal documents, and memorabilia of his career acquired by his son, Carr E. R. Sherrington. The correspondence is largely comprised of letters. The first section are letters by Sir Charles Scott Sherrington to Sir John Carew Eccles, Carr E.R. Sherrington and to Dr. William Gibson. There are also letters from CSS to various other people filed under Miscellaneous Letters. There is also great deal of letters to Charles Scott Sherrington from approximately 317 senders. There are also letters relating to CSS, with approximately 18 different senders.

Throughout the fonds are copies of letters obtained from the Yale Medical Library of correspondence between CSS and John Farquhar Fulton, William R. LeFanu, the Royal Society of London, E.A. Schafer and Angelo Ruffini. Finally, there is correspondence between Carr E. R. Sherrington and Dr. William Gibson, which were added later to the fonds, in addition to copies of Sherrington’s publications.

The fonds also contains manuscripts, notebooks, notes and drafts by Sherrington, covering a range of subjects including Jean Fernel, Sir William Osler, and Goethe. There are address books, laboratory notes with drawings discussing the mind-matter relationship and biology. There is also an unidentified paper written in 1948. There is a collection of articles and book reviews about CSS, handwritten manuscripts, and menus and invitations for events.

There are photographs in the fonds, specifically illustrations for frontispieces from books, as well as photographs of buildings, landscapes and laboratories. The fonds also contains certificates and diplomas received by CSS from various institutions, including honorary degrees and memberships to societies. There are also objects in the fonds, such as medals, chairs, ice skates, and hats, which are kept in the Sherrington Room at the Woodward Library, and are listed as such in the finding aid.

Collection concerns the history of the College of Science, Dublin where William Fletcher Barrett worked from 1873 to 1910. Included in the collection are handwritten notes, letters, and a parliamentary report on the history of the college.

The Macintosh Collection was created by Sir Robert Reynolds Macintosh, a Nuffield Professor of Anesthetics at Oxford. The collection consists of the documents relating to the life and research of anesthetist Joseph Thomas Clover. In addition there are correspondence, research and notes written by Sir Robert Macintosh, which were collected during his research into the life of anesthetist John Snow. There are also notes and correspondence by Dr. K Bryn Thomas, a visiting medical historian and anesthetist who arranged, catalogued and annotated the collection in 1971. Throughout the collection, there are various notations, transcriptions and notes written by Dr. Thomas that occurred during his processing of the collection. The current arrangement of the collection is still largely the arrangement applied originally by Dr. Thomas.
The materials related to Joseph Thomas Clover spans the beginning of his career until the end of his life. They include obituaries and eulogies of his death (1882-83), and articles in magazines on Clover after his death (1913, 1928). There are photographs of Joseph Thomas Clover and his wife, Mary Ann Clover in various poses and a small, hand-drawn family tree of the Clover family. Clover’s observations, patient notes, hand-draw sketches of anatomy and apparatus and even some small books Clover used for financial recordkeeping, are present, some in small, bound volumes and others in loose pages. Clover’s original article of indenture (1841) and testimonials regarding his qualities as a doctor are also present. Correspondence within the collection include discussions on anesthesia, requests from patients and for apparatus, letters of condolences Mary Ann Clover after the death of Joseph Clover (1882) and letters to Clover’s daughter regarding her father’s legacy (1913). A small amount of the letters has been transcribed by K Bryn Thomas and present in the correspondence section. There is a small collection of cards bearing advice and quotations from Clover’s father, J.W. Clover, pertaining to weddings, finances, and life, as well as Clover’s own notes on God and life (1859-65). There are also several sheets of pressed flowers.
The second portion of the Joseph Thomas Clover collection was organized by subject matter by K Bryn Thomas. The sections are largely undated and cover Clover’s notes on ether, nitrous oxide and ether, chloroform, nitrous oxide, as well as a large amount of hand written notes covering various anesthetic subjects. Clover’s notes also discuss the deaths from chloroform and resuscitation. There are also hand-drawn illustrations of various apparatus inventions and experiments.
The third section of the collection contains the material collected by Sir Robert Macintosh during his research into anesthetist John Snow. This section contains biographical sketches by Sir Robert Macintosh, letters of correspondence between John Snow’s descendants and Sir Robert Macintosh, and a speech given regarding John Snow in 1955. There are a few correspondences regarding the gifting of Snow’s book <em>On Cholera</em>. A transcript of Snow’s article <em>On Asphyxia</em> is also contained in the collection. There are also copies, transcripts, and correspondence relating to Snow’s will, and his burial certificate. The remainder of the collection consist of items about John Snow, including correspondence to his descendants regarding his memorial tombstone, correspondence to his publishers regarding his books, and items written about John Snow himself.

The fonds consists of records relating to the education, research, career, and post-retirement activities of David Narver. The fonds is organized into three series: Postdoctoral Education; Career; and Personal. The Postdoctoral Education series includes records related to Narver’s PhD research while enrolled at the University of Washington. Narver worked as a researcher at the Canadian Fisheries Research Board Biological Station in Nanaimo, BC, and in Chignik, Alaska, working on salmon research projects. The Career series covers records related to Narver’s three-decade career. Narver worked for the BC Ministry of Environment, Fisheries Branch and Fish and Wildlife Branch, as Anadromous Fisheries Coordinator, Acting Chief of Fisheries Management, and Director of the Fisheries Branch. Records in the Career series include speeches and presentations, official correspondence, policy and administrative records (including meeting minutes), and research reports. The Personal series includes records related to Narver’s undergraduate or graduate post-secondary education, speeches and presentations given after his retirement, and a manuscript of his account of his time in Alaska. Narver remained active in fish, fishing, and fish habitat work after his retirement, working with the BC Wildlife Federation among other organizations.

Fonds contains records relating to the research of David C. Walker. This includes photographs of electron microscope images and illustrations regarding epithelial and endothelial tri-cellular corner tight junctions. Also included are notes, drafts, reviews, and final copies of four publications: “The role of epithelial cell tight junctions in tracheal permeability,” “The reassessment of the tricellular region of epithelial cell tight junctions,” “The structure of the tricellular junctions of pulmonary capillaries,” and “Tricellular corners: preferred sites for leukocyte emigration from the pulmonary vasculature of rabbits".

Fonds consists of laboratory manuals published by the UBC Department of Physics between 1949 and 1966 (most dated 1957-1962); mimeographed hand-outs for experiments and other assignments; hand-written lecture notes; and a 1944 Canadian Army physics laboratory manual. Many of the manuals are annotated. The manuals are bound, but the notes and hand-outs are loose; all have been placed in acid-free folders. They are arranged by course number, and then chronologically; unnumbered materials, and folders containing unsorted material from various courses, were placed at the end.
Fonds also includes promotional materials, many of which relate specifically to the Department of Physics at university-wide Open Houses, annual reports from the Department of Physics, notes made by Professor John Warren regarding x-rays and particle physics, as well as photographs taken of individuals, groups, and events related to the Department of Physics.

The fonds consists of miscellaneous files from George Pickard's office (1949-1974), including records from the Canadian Committee on Oceanography (1960-1972). The bulk of the records are composed of departmental files including correspondence, grant material, and financial records. There is also a comprehensive set of oceanographic log sheets containing data collected between 1951 and 1978.

The fonds consists of one volume of correspondence. The volume includes 31 autographed letters to and from various correspondents, including Dr. James Lind. Bound with the letters are prints of the writers and brief biographical statements. The letters cover various topics ranging from scientific and medical topics to current events of the time and personal inquiries.

The fonds consists of transcripts of documents from and pertaining to the Deutsche Groenland (Greenland) Expedition of 1930-1931 headed by Alfred Wegener and, more specifically, pertaining to his death while attempting to bring desperately needed supplies of petroleum from Weststation to Eismitte. There are also ten photographs.

This is the complete set of John Burdon Sanderson’s vivisection licenses, from 1876 to 1905 (the year of his death). The first license is numbered “1”, and is in fact the first license ever issued in Great Britain under the Act of 1876. They are signed in person by the various Home Secretaries, Viscount Cross (Home Secretary 1874), Vernon Harcourt, Henry Matthews, H.H. Asquith (later Prime Minister), etc.

In addition, there are two small notebooks, written by John Burdon Sanderson’s wife, Lady Ghetal Burdon Sanderson, which contain copies of letters written by John Burdon Sanderson and herself, that she recopied into the notebooks, in the course of her research into his life.

This group of about 40 letters, a part of the Sinclair Collection, consists of correspondence between Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) and John Scott Burdon Sanderson (1828-1905) during the years from 1873-1881.
The letters deal with the research Darwin and Burdon Sanderson did on the digestive powers and leaf movements of insect-eating plants, notably Drosera and Dionaea. Darwin published the results of this research as part of his <em>Insectivorous Plants</em> (1875).
There is also correspondence about Burdon Sanderson's (and to a lesser extent, Darwin’s) attempts to ensure that the antivivisectionists should not secure the passage of a bill through Parliament that should hinder scientific research. Sanderson's efforts influenced the events that led to the appointment of a Royal Commission in 1875 to study the use of animals in scientific research in Britain.
