History

Horace Birch Simpson (b. 17 March 1917, d. 20 September 1994), also referred to as Horace Simpson, Horace B. Simpson, or H.B. Simpson, was the eldest son of S.M. Simpson. He married Joan Katherine Jennens on 17 November, 1937. A daughter, Sharron J. Simpson, was born.
From a young age, H.B. frequently spent time at his father’s mill. After graduation he joined the mill as part of its workforce. In the 1940s, he became assistant general manager, and later, general manager. He transitioned to president at the time that his father was incapacitated by stroke, in 1955.
H.B. was instrumental in the launch of the new S.M.S. Ltd. Plywood plant in 1957 and made the decision to sell S.M.S. Ltd. and its subsidiaries to Crown Zellerbach in 1965. He stayed on as general manager for one year. He died in September of 1994.
