History
The Sólskin Society is an Icelandic women’s society was first established in 1917 as an organization to help people of Icelandic descent who were in need, from sending money and knitted goods to soldiers in World War I, bundles to Britain and clothing and quilts to the Russian Relief Fund in World War II. The Sólskin Society became a registered society in 1969 under the Society Act of British Columbia. Sólskin was an active organization working towards providing wellbeing to the residents of the Icelandic Care Home Höfn. Their secondary goal was to promote cultural traditions and heritage of the Icelandic community in the greater Vancouver area. The Society was an affiliate member of the Icelandic National League of North America, and worked with the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia to host events, and keep sort and catalogue their Sólskin Icelandic Heritage Library. In 1992, the Society celebrated its 75th anniversary. In 2001, the board reached a decision to no longer be a charitable organization, as many of its members were in their eighties, and no younger people were joining to continue their work. They continued to be a social group in their community. In Icelandic, “sólskin” means sunlight.
