The photographs contained in this subseries are images featured in the <i>Death in a Dumpster</i> publication.

Subseries originates with Banana’s earliest performance art while she was Victoria’s Town Fool. It consists of various certificates in bananology (including bachelors and masters degrees) which Anna would give out to individuals who had “Gone Bananas”, often after providing Anna with a piece of Banana paraphernalia or a Banana-related fact or story. This activity often took place within the context of her mail art actions, where she would mail the certificates back to networkers who had provided her with banana-related mail. However, it began while she was still Town Fool, prior to or concurrent with her entry into the mail art network.

The subseries consists almost entirely of various certificates, as well as letters to correspondents.

This subseries is made up of Banana’s long running Banana Rag newsletter, which she began in 1971 to provide the general public with information about her activities as Victoria Town Fool. Over the years, it became a means for her to provide information about her mail art activities, and the newsletter itself became a central part of her network presence. It also provided subscribers with information about other mail art opportunities, trends, or exhibitions.

This subseries contains copies of the newsletters, as well as an inventory of the newsletters, some original markups and pasteups, and information about subscribers.

Babel was a newsletter created and circulated within the graduate student community and contains written contributions in prose, poetry, and drawings. Sub-series consists of six editions of the newsletter, filed chronologically from September 1998 to March 1999.

This series is composed of legal documents concerning court cases involving Chinese and Aboriginal people as both witnesses and defendants. The collection documents early relationships between colonial society and Chinese and Aboriginal individuals within a legal context in British Columbia and provides documentary evidence of those relationships including first-hand narratives from all participants. The documents reveal the way in which the 19th century justice system in British Columbia related to those people of Aboriginal and Chinese descent.

Consists of eighty-two files pertaining to charges against Aboriginal and Chinese individuals and all the supporting court documents. There are 340 documents from 1862 to 1891. Most of this material either passed through or was created in the court systems of the day resulting in sworn testimony giving first hand accounts of events. Some of the documents may have been interpreted into English by court interpreters. Judge Augustus Pemberton (1808-1891) was appointed the magistrate and commissioner of police for Vancouver Island by Governor Douglas in 1858 and served as a county court judge in Victoria from September 23rd, 1867 to January 14th, 1881. Pemberton oversaw all but fourteen of these charges.

File contains textual records pertaining to Audrey Thomas' poem, <i>Intertidal Life: An Excerpt</i>. The records include drafts, correspondence, and copies of the published edition of the poem.

Subseries consists of records related to Asian immigration to and settlement in North America. These records pertain predominantly to Chinese immigration and settlement in British Columbia, but also include records pertaining to other Asian diaspora as well as other regions of Canada and the United States. These records document early Asian immigration and settlement following the gold rush, such as the Chinese role in the construction of the transcontinental railway, where Chinese workers were assigned the most dangerous jobs, and anti-Asian sentiment in Canada. Other records in this subseries include materials related to Canadian immigration policy and multiculturalism in Canada, Chinese-language educational materials and children's books, Chinese business and residential directories, city directories for Vancouver and Victoria, and materials related to the Sino-Japanese War. As immigration in this context pertains both to first-generation immigrants as well as their families and descendants, records in this subseries also illustrate the Asian experience in Canada and highlight the development of Asian communities, including social, cultural, religious, political, sporting, and educational activities as well as the activities of organisations such as Chinese trade societies, the Chinese Benevolent Association, the Chinese Canadian Association, and the Chinese Nationalist League of Canada.

This subseries also contains an extensive collection of early photographs of Asian-Canadians and Asian-Americans. Some highlights include historical class photographs from Vancouver's Strathcona School, street scenes from the Vancouver, Victoria, and San Francisco Chinatowns, wedding portraits, and the 1915-1918 photograph album of Jue Fong, then a Chinese-American teenager, which offers rare candid photographs from that time period.

While an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing, Sheila Zerr devised an instructional program for nurses to increase people’s awareness of non-prescriptions drugs, focusing on ASA (aspirin). Funded by Sterling Drug Ltd., the project was designed to lead to a broader understanding of the drug and its effects. The information was designed to be passed on to nurses, and from them to the wider community.

This subseries includes records relating to Kujundzic's artwork production: sketchbooks; art pieces; poetry and notes; working artwork drafts; photographs and slides of his exhibits and artwork; and essays and writings on topics such as pollution and artist life. Also included are some autobiographical writings and materials that Kujundzic collected as sources of inspiration.

Subseries consists of large-format posters and other graphic materials used by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company to advertise travel by rail, ship, and air, C.P.R. hotels and resorts, and travel packages such as tours of Canada and luxurious world cruises. Framed prints and photographs were distributed to Canadian Pacific Railway agents' offices for display, such as a framed print of the entire Canadian Pacific Ocean Services steamship fleet in 1910.

The C.P.R. often commissioned Canadian artists and photographers, such as Alfred Crocker Leighton and Peter Ewart, to produce artwork for these posters and prints. Many of these posters depicted C.P.R. trains and ships, Canadian landscapes, and foreign destinations, while others listed ship specifications such as top speed or engine type, dates of departure, ports of call, and fares.

The materials in this subseries include an extensive collection of lithoprint and silkscreen posters, photographs, prints, paintings, etchings and engraved illustrations, technical drawings, pamphlet covers, stationery, and postcards, as well as newspaper clippings, a map, and ephemera such as baggage labels, wall calendars, and printed laundry bags. This subseries also includes examples of signage, such as steamship fire safety, CPR storm and weather signals, and passenger information notices.

The scrapbooks are delineated by which newspaper the clippings came from.

Consists of three subgroups as originally organized by Douglas : Mountain Articles (arranged alphabetically by title), Coast Articles, and Other Articles (both groups arranged by subject, then alphabetically by titles). Most of the articles date from the late 1940s through the 1980s.

The subseries contains materials collected by Art O’Keeffe, former business manager of the IBEW Local 213, including correspondence and legal documentation regarding his suspension from the union following the Lenkurt strike in 1966. Also contains newspaper clippings and court case summaries, some of which may have been added later by Ian McDonald.

This includes minutes and agendas from meetings, notes (both handwritten and photocopies of handwritten notes), financial reports and statements, newsletters, redress proposals, correspondence, memos, and records about other related topics like fundraising, programs, awards (such as the Canadian Mennonite Scholarship), projects, and the development of the NAJC (such as the association’s Constitution, by-laws, updates, future directions of the association, and structure recommendations). While the bulk of the sub-series relate to Art Miki’s activities, there are some records that relate to the activities of the National Executive Committee (NEC), Gordon R. Kadota’s activities, who was the NAJC President before Art Miki, and to the activities of representatives from the NAJC’s member centers or chapter organizations.

In about 1993 or 1994, under co-chairs Brenda Flynn and Beverly Du Gas, the Committee became conscious of the need to preserve the group’s own records. The name of the committee was changed to the Archives Committee in 1996.
