John Hunter fonds

Fonds includes sixty-one literary works dating from 1969 to 2011, including screenplays, teleplays, manuscripts of novels, and non-fiction work along with accompanying correspondence, notes, press, research, photographs, and recordings. Scripts include both produced and unproduced projects. Also included is a small collection of personal material such as drawings and biographical materials with obituaries and tributes for Hunter.

Personal series

Series includes biographical information about John Hunter, including lists of awards, résumé, obituaries, early rejection letters, cartoons, and his undergraduate thesis.

[Original Collections]

Series consists of 3 m of textual records and additional graphic and audiovisual materials. The textual records include a comprehensive collection of UBC student cards from 1921 to 1994, many of which include detailed information about individual nurses. Records from the Kootenay Lake Hospital, the Kelowna General Hospital and Prince Rupert General Hospital date back to the early years of this past century. Pamphlets dating from 1887 documents aspects of nursing history. Theses by Margaret Campbell, Beverly Du Gas and Helen Niskala are among seventeen theses, dissertations and papers included. Miscellaneous photographs without sufficient provenance are included in this classification. Audiovisual materials on audio and video cassette, CD and DVDs are arranged as subseries.

Books

Subseries was created between the late 1960s and 2016, and is made up of collected books. These include published books about various artists, art movements, and collections of essays, as well as artist books, some chap books, self published books of poetry and other small edition books. There is no clear focus to the collection, although mail art, performance art, artist books, and concrete poetry make up a significant portion.

Books are separated into files by name.

Alice and the Dodo, watercolour

Item is an original watercolour depicting a scene from Alice in Wonderland in which Alice converses with the Dodo. A rat is perched beside her on a soap box and a parrot sits on a branch overhead.

Draft list of planned publications

The item relates to planned books, chapbooks and ephemeral pieces of the creator. Item consists of folded pamphlet, High Branch Society membership renewal form with return envelope, and accompanying envelope.

UBC Affairs series

Series consists of records relating to the Department of History, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty Association, and other UBC academic issues. It includes correspondence, reports, minutes, course outlines and changes, and grant proposals.

Reference Materials series

Series consists of newspaper, book chapters, magazine clippings, and notes on subjects related to Maillard's writing projects or of general interest to him.

Essays and Articles series

The series consists of correspondence, notes and drafts relating to several of New's articles, including his article in volume 3 of The History of the Book in Canada, “Literature in English” in The Canadian Encyclopedia and “The Short Story in Canada.”
