Collection consists of documents and maps that supported the findings in McDowell's book, Uncharted Waters: The Explorations of Jose Narvaez (1768-1840), published in 2015 by Ronsdale Press, Vancouver, BC.

All items in this collection are photocopies. The dates of the originals fall between 1788 and 1830. When available, information about the locations of the originals is specified in the file-level description.

From McDowell: "One of the least appreciated, but potentially most important set of historical documents in [RBSC] are those related to the overlooked Spanish navigator Jose Maria Narvaez (1768-1840), the first European mariner to explore the central and northern parts of what we now call the Salish Sea in 1791 -- one year before the famous captains Dionisio Alcala-Galiano, Cayetano Valdes y Bazan, and George Vancouver investigated the same inland sea. Although Narvaez's remarkable achievements and contributions were largely ignored, overlooked, or minimized until 1998, a more accurate assessment is emerging, and it has been supported significantly by the documentary information in [RBSC]."

Fonds consists of Jim Coleman's published articles from multiple newspapers (predominantly the Globe & Mail and Vancouver Province), and magazine articles published in both Maclean's and Saturday Night magazines. The fonds also consists of original manuscripts from Coleman's two books: Hoofprint on my Heart, and Long Ride on a Hobby Horse.

The fonds consists of a report of coordination efforts between the University of British Columbia Departments of Education and Agriculture (1917), Convocation programs (1926), miscellaneous Senate records relating to funding cutbacks (1931-1933) and materials from the Student Publicity Campaign (1931-1932).

The fonds consists of incoming correspondence primarily from writer Jane Rule (1976-1983) and to a lesser extent from her partner Helen Sonthoff. It also includes copies of miscellaneous articles and columns by and about Jane Rule collected by Jean Wilson.

Fonds reflect Jean Rands’s interest and activism in feminist labour organizing in western Canada and her speaking and writing around these issues, and also contains records relating to her family and personal connections. The fonds primarily consists of labour union meeting agendas and minutes, union leaflets and flyers, newspaper clippings, legal documents, correspondence, and drafts of speeches and articles. Personal records include diaries, personal correspondence, and a few photographs.

The fonds consist of correspondence and other records relating to the University Senate's activities, the President's Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Harassment, the Faculty Association's Status of Women Committee, and the Historical Association (Vancouver Branch). There are also a limited number of records about the Academic Women's Association, the Archival Studies Committee, and several other University bodies and granting an honorary degree to Expo 86 commissioner Jimmy Pattison.

The fonds consists of Coulthard's incoming family and general correspondence, correspondence from noted English composer Elizabeth Poston, financial records, biographical information, printed material and clippings documenting her involvement in the Canadian and International music communities as an advocate, educator and composer. Also included are original manuscripts of Coulthard's compositions and published and unpublished sound recordings of her work performances. The fonds also contain scrapbooks assembled by Coulthard's mother, Jean Robinson Coulthard, between 1898 and 1929, family photographs, and a photograph album compiled by her father, Dr. Walter Coulthard, depicting the Rossland area (ca. 1902).

Jean Coulthard sous-fonds was organized into the following series: Correspondence (two sub-series, Coulthard-Poston Correspondence and Family Correspondence), Financial and Legal, Biography, Programmes, Publications, Press Clippings, Manuscripts, Sound recordings, Miscellaneous, Photographs, Performance Notes and Remarks, Musical Education and Workshops, Inspirations, Journals and Date Books, and Audio Visual.

The fonds consists of business correspondence (1927-1943), legal documents, a playbill and the script for "Left Turn", a handwritten article on Western Canadian Universities for the Canadian Forum (1930), and assorted clippings. It also includes five scrapbooks.

The fonds consists of an album entitled "Caravaning to the Land of the Golden Twilight, June 13 - July 1, 1930," assembled by Miss J.E. Denison. It includes a description of a motoring trip from Blaine, Washington to Hazelton, B.C., then to Vancouver, B.C. The caravan trip involved groups from the United States, Alaska and British Columbia. The B.C. party included Premier S.F. Tolmie, Minister of Mines W.A. Mackenzie and Lieutenant-Governor R.R. Bruce. The purpose of the caravan was to investigate the proposal for an Alaskan highway which would join up with the B.C. highway network.

The collection consists of a bound volume containing J.C. Dudgeon's autograph collection of many prominent American political figures, military leaders and literary men and women. Political autographs Include members of the United States Congress of 1861, U.S. President Millard Fillmore, Senators and Representatives of the United States from 1867, and Governors, Commanders and Bishops from 1867, Literary figures include Henry W. Longfellow, Anna Dickinson, Horace Greeley, and others.

The fonds consists of a typed transcript of Ainsworth's autobiography written between 1877 and 1892.

The collection consists of student records and correspondence between E.H. Morrow and Fred Sasaki, Oyama Kazuhiko, David Shiozake, Peter Yamada and George Yamashita (1940-1950). The correspondence files provide an account of the treatment accorded Japanese-Canadians in the 1940s. There is also a copy of an article from Viewpoints inspired by the information in the files, as well as some follow-up correspondence with the former students.

The fonds consists of diaries, photographs, and correspondence of Janet Jenkins. The photographs parallel the diaries and correspondence in documenting her life. Also included is a postscript to the diaries written by her husband, Trevor Jenkins in 1991.

Celebration in 1934, materials on French Canadian folk songs, the International celebration of Niagara, and awards Ms. Greig received.

The fonds consists of notes, manuscripts, drafts, galleys, and correspondence relating to Rule's published and unpublished novels and short stories. The fonds also includes biographical and autobiographical material, college papers, teaching records, non- fiction manuscripts, typescript copies of book reviews by Rule, and personal and professional correspondence. Also included are numerous photographs, maintained both singly and in photograph albums, as well as digital images. Rule's collection of
reviews of her work, audio recordings of interviews and readings, her Orders of Canada and B.C. certificates, and the first XTRA! West Jane Rule Memorial Writer of the Year Award are also included.

The fonds consists of literary correspondence, drafts of literary work, published books and articles, reviews of Drabek’s work, printed material accumulated for research purposes, a small amount of personal correspondence and family papers and some newspaper photographs of Drabek.

There is a series comprising material Drabek created through his administrative role as a representative to the Writers’ Union of Canada, BC Caucus and as President of the Federation of BC Writers, in addition to his work as a writer. It contains minutes of meeting, correspondence, newsletters, and other material.

Fonds consists of correspondence and reports relating to de Bruyn's duties as a member of the Department of English at UBC. The fonds also include incoming personal correspondence from Roy Daniells (including verses), Earle Birney, Margaret Laurence, Dorothy Livesay and Ethel Wilson. Also included are records from the Lifewriters: copies of stories, correspondence, financial records, and newspaper clippings.

Fonds consists of several essays and one publication. It includes an annotated copy of a paper written by St. Clair-Sobell, an essay about Leo Tolstoy, a biography of Ornest D. Durnovo with related correspondence, and written remarks by a Soviet commentator on one of St. Clair-Sobell's papers. The publication is a course calendar from Karl-Franzens-Reichsuniversitat (University of Graz, in Austria) for the winter semester 1944/45.

The fonds consists of assorted annual reports from departments in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (1969-1977), records from the Curriculum and Calendar Committee (1967-1977) and material relating to research projects (1973-1979).

Fonds illustrates James R. Stanton’s personal life and guiding business in Knight Inlet, British Columbia. It consists of an unpublished biography written by Stanton (including a foreword by R.M. Lorentsen and an epilogue by Blair Mclean), photographs selected by Stanton for his manuscript, and additional photographs and slides of the Stanton family.

The fonds consists of draft copies and research notes for Pilton's M.A. thesis.

The fonds consists of subject files, correspondence, financial records, plans, maps, specifications, contract rates and related material pertaining to contract 602-R for the building of submarines in Vancouver by British Pacific Engineering and Construction Company Ltd. (1917).

Fonds consists mainly of correspondence of outgoing and incoming photocopied letters to Claire Culhane and Noam Chomsky, as well as copies of articles and speeches written by Claire Culhane.

The fonds consists of one volume of correspondence. The volume includes 31 autographed letters to and from various correspondents, including Dr. James Lind. Bound with the letters are prints of the writers and brief biographical statements. The letters cover various topics ranging from scientific and medical topics to current events of the time and personal inquiries.

This fonds consists predominantly of photographs and other reproductions of Lansdowne’s work which were created over the course of his career. Artwork contained in the fonds include unfinished drawings and sketches, reproductions and prints, as well as art inventory files which provide details of works that were sold, and for specific named projects. The fonds also includes business and personal correspondence, as well as financial records pertaining to the sale of artwork, Lansdowne’s services as a commercial painter, and his business relationship with M.F. Feheley Arts Company Limited and TDF Artists Limited. Records also include biographical information, awards and ephemera, along with publications containing his work, and newspaper clippings about his work and career. Photographs depict family and friends, Lansdowne at work, as well as publicity photographs.

With his letters, Woodcock also included four typescript poems and an essay on Simone Weil published in Atropos. The fonds consists of a typescript of Whittaker's reminiscences, "My Sixty (60) Years in the Forest Industry", a poem by Elsie May Whittaker, a typescript and photocopy of "J.W. Whittaker Remembers Friends at Youbou", and selected photocopies from albums created by Whittaker.
