Ephemera and memorabilia

Sub-series contains announcements and invitations to literary and cultural events, plaques that Miki was awarded for his literary and political work, a t-shirt and posters advertising Miki’s 1960's rock and roll band Roy Miki and the Downbeats, two t-shirts and buttons advertising the redress movement, broadsheets with poems by Miki and one from the BC Heritage poetry festival which Miki compiled, posters announcing events that Miki participated in and advertising his publications, and two copies of a certificate from the Government of Canada officially acknowledging the redress settlement. Also contains audio discs Miki felt important to include with his work, as well as DVDs that include Miki in some way.

Chinese-Canadian History

Series consists of records related to Wong’s service as the director of the Chinese-Canadian Military Museum Society, as well as his research on Vancouver’s Chinatown and Chinese-Canadian history.

Records consist of grant applications, newspaper clippings, stamps, magazine articles, Cantonese language course materials, photographs, negatives, slides, photograph albums, scrapbooks, CDs, DVDs, a beret, and a pin.

New Music Program

This series consists of artist and project files, correspondence, grant and other funding applications, box office reports, festival files, records of visiting artists and artist residencies, artist and project files, and administrative records. Deborah “DB” Boyko was the Curator and Director/Curator of the New Music Program between 1990 and 2018, and much of the correspondence with funding entities and artists was directed to or sent by her. Concerts and events include jazz festivals (Fake Jazz, Du Maurier Jazz) and collaborations with the New Orchestra Workshop (NOW). The New Music Program also regularly offered student volunteer and work positions, coordinating with North Burnaby high schools.

Publications and projects

Subseries contains publications published by Western Forest Products and its predecessors, mostly originating from MacMillan Bloedel. The majority of the material dates from the 1990s, and includes annual reports, internal updates, and publicity material.

Sea to Sky - All British Rally medallion

Medallion recognizing participation in the Sea to Sky All British Rally (2015). Medallion design by Charles van Sandwyk. The event is an annual "British car run" (a scenic drive for car aficionados) from North Vancouver to Whistler.

Artifacts series

Series consists of artifacts from St. John’s University in Taiwan, world reunions of the Johanneans, and St. John’s University Alumni Associations, including badges for the world reunions and souvenir caps, cups, T-shirts, ring, crystal artworks, magnifiers, key chain watch, paper weight and gift flag. Box 6 contains hard artifacts (e.g. non-fabric materials), while box 7 contains soft artifacts (e.g. fabric materials).

DVDs series

Series consists of DVDs pertaining to the Johanneans’ activities, including world reunions. Series is arranged into twelve files.

Maps

Maps in this series were primarily produced by Greenpeace, other environmental non-governmental organizations, forestry companies, First Nations, the Government of Canada, and the Province of British Columbia. The series notably includes maps produced by environmental groups depicting the state of forests in coastal British Columbia, conservation area priorities for First Nations and environmental groups, forest development plans, maps from Greenpeace Canada campaigns, and maps produced as part of the Central and North Coasts Land and Resource Management Plans. Maps mostly depict the Central and North Coasts and Vancouver Island, along with other regions of British Columbia. Any folded maps in other series of the Greenpeace Canada fonds or any maps housed with textual records, remained in their respective files to maintain original order and provenance. There are no subseries and files are based on the original grouping of maps as provided by the donor. File titles are based on the content of items.

Correspondence

Series documents Kogawa’s social and business activities as a writer, consisting of personal and business correspondence with publishers, associations, readers, and greeting cards from friends and family. Associations represented in the records include the Holy Cross Japanese Canadian Anglican Church, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Writer’s Union of Canada, and American Biographical Institutes, Inc., among others. Correspondence is from Japan and across Canada, mainly from Toronto and B.C. Correspondence is occasionally interleaved with pamphlets of her work, publications related to her participation in literary, cultural and public events. Miscellaneous records include newspaper clippings, donation slips and some notes. The arrangement reflects the creator’s original order.

Anna Banana drew, created collage, painted and printed from the early 1970s up until the late 2010s and beyond. This subseries contains the working drafts, final works, and copies of her visual art. This subseries consists mostly of graphical materials, including drawings, watercolour paintings, xerox art, photocopies of Anna’s original artwork, and postcards.

Athletics photographs series

The photographs in this fonds contain headshots of individual UBC athletes, coaches, managers, and administrators. Also included are team photographs, action shots, mascots and cheer squads. In addition, there are images of the Bobby Gaul Memorial Trophy presentations, Big Block and UBC Hall of Fame events. Unidentified images have been retained; specifically, unknown women athletes and teams were retained as women’s sports are underrepresented. Predominant sports represented in the photos include Thunderbirds football, ice hockey, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, swimming and rowing. There are photos of UBC athletes and teams in fencing, rugby, wrestling, gymnastics, tennis, square dancing, curling, skiing, sailing and cross country track and field.

Fonds covers an extended period, beginning with administrative material, which includes departmental budgets dating back to the early 1920s and continuing through the 1950s. There are also some departmental minutes from the 1940s and 1950s and most of the 1960s. There are records about the construction and renovation of the Biological Sciences Building, minutes from the various committees on which department heads sat, and material about UBC's Botanical Garden. There is also a brief but useful series of records concerning the Life Sciences Council's implementation and early history.
