Radio broadcasts

Series consists of transcripts of political radio broadcasts made by Shepherd and others concerning issues such as agriculture, the economy, immigration and colonization, legislative politics, education, and the Co-operative Commonwealth Youth Movement.

Surrey Berry Growers' Cooperative

Series consists of records related to the Surrey Berry Farmers' Cooperative. The Surrey Berry Farmers' Cooperative is believed to have been Surrey's first berry cooperative and was created sometime in the 1920s. While many of the farmers were Japanese, membership was not restricted by ethnicity. It is unknown when the Surrey Berry Farmers' Cooperative dissolved, but presumably sometime after 1952.

Records in this series include correspondence related to land and property owned by the Cooperative that was confiscated after many of the farmers were interned and their land and property confiscated. Correspondence consists of between Zennosuke Inouye and other members of the Cooperative, between Zennosuke and banks and businesses regarding the Cooperative, and correspondence with a family who helped hide some of the Cooperative's property from the Office of the Custodian.

Other records include alist farmers in the Cooperative that purchased Victory Bonds in 1942, a hand-drawn map and list of all the farmers in the Surrey Berry Growers Cooperative in 1941, and accounts and receipts belonging to the Cooperative.

Training materials for the RCAMC sisters

Series consists of notes on teaching techniques, the science of education, and hospital administration; lesson plans, obstetrical manual from St. Michael's Hospital, pamphlets, and a syllabus used for training RCAMC nursing sisters who would be teaching during the 1950s.

Program and policy - CCF

Series consists ofpamphlets, reports, and other textual material outlining the program and policies of the Co-operative Commonwealth Association, both provincially and nationally . Includes a memorandum on CCF agricultural policy, 1943, and a 1941 campaign brochure for Shepherd outlining the CCF program.

Elections: candidates material

Series consists of material related to the CCF provincial election campaigns and platforms of 1945 and 1952, and Shepherd's participation in the 1945 election, including material outlining his own platform.

Cartoons, newspaper articles, and magazines

Series consists of publications collected and created by the Responsible Enterprise association and Gladstone Murray. Record types include cartoons, newspaper articles, bulletins, and magazines. Cartoons are published by Responsible Enterprise Association, and relate largely to the labour movement, and socialism and communism in Canada, and internationally. Newspaper articles are copied from a range of sources including The News Optimist, The Quebec-Telegraph, The Windsor Daily Star, and The New York Times. Bulletins from Britain are written by John Gloag, and published by Responsible Enterprise. Issues of The Outlook magazine, the official publication of Responsible Enterprise, are also included in the series.

Notes From Malcolm

Series consists of notes from Lowry, written on small note cards and scrap paper. Lowry wrote notes to Margerie frequently between 1939 and 1953. The cards often contain love notes to Margerie as well as scraps of poems, small sketches, thoughts, observations, and fragments of what would later become poems.

Records related to education.

Series consists of records related to Faminow’s university education and law articling. Records include correspondence, essays (some written by people other than Faminow) and short stories and poems, some of which reference the Doukhobors. Also includes certificates from Willamette University, Law Society of British Columbia, Law Society of Alberta, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, University of Saskatchewan and the Province of Alberta. Files are arranged by type of record.

Ephemera

Series consists of ephemera material that belonged to Beverly Inouye which includes newspaper clippings, a program from Beverly's graduation from UBC, promotional materials from Tom Inouye's insurance business, and autograph books that belonged to Beverly Inouye. The autograph books date from 1942-1949 and include signatures and inscriptions from friends and people Beverly met during internment in Kaslo, BC.

Biographical records

Includes both records and newspaper clippings which detail Harris’ birthday announcements, information regarding his connection to community of Sandon, B.C., his role in its development, silver mining, and his death.

Public Health Nursing

Series consists of records relating to Campbell Jackson's work as a Public Health Nurse in the interior of British Columbia (Kamloops-Lilooet-Ashcroft area), and her involvement in the British Columbia Public Health Service, including correspondence and documents relating to her employment by the Provincial Government, as well as a photograph and memorabilia relating to her involvement in the BC Public Health Service.

Sidney Norman records

This series includes correspondence and other records related to Harris and his dealings with the Norman & Co. Mining and Stock Brokers. There are also personal letters between Norman and Harris’ wife Alma after Harris’ death.

School notebooks

Series consists of Shimizu’s notes of his academic studies. It includes quotations and reflections on religious, English, and Japanese courses.

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs and negatives related to past Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia (ICC of BC) events, photographs taken of Club executive, membership, and scholarship winners.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence of Cumyow, including petitions and related correspondence sent on behalf of the Chinese Empire Reform Association of Vancouver to the British and United States governments concerning a political crisis in China, 1900 to 1902 . Series also includes Cumyow's correspondence with Vancouver City Archivist J.S. Matthews, 1952 to 1954, relating to the history of Chinese-Canadians in Vancouver, and the history of Vancouver in general.

Manuscripts, Prose

Series consists of a handwritten partial draft of Chapter VI of Under the Volcano and a photocopy of the inscription made by Lowry in an edition of Under the Volcano which he gave to the Neilsons.

Agreements and other documents concerning the organization and development of the company.

Series consists of agreements and other documents pertaining to the development and organization of the Canadian Western Lumber Company, Limited. Includes records pertaining to its financial organization, its directors, the acquisition and organization of its subsidiary companies, and the company’s physical development.

Insurance records.

Series consists of appraisals, statements, policies, correspondence, and other records concerning insurance for the Canadian Western Lumber Company, Limited. Includes records pertaining to insurance for the Company’s subsidiary companies as well.

Financial records

Series consists of financial records of the Canadian Western Lumber Company, Limited, and has been arranged into the following sub-series: general ledgers and files ([1909]- 1958), accounts and statements (1911-1955), pay roll records (1909-1952) and tax records (1910-1955).

Socialist poems and prose

This series is made up of poems, essays, and other documents written by Darwin and H. M. "Annie" Charlton, as well as writings the family kept of Mildred Macleod.

Correspondence

Series consists of personal correspondence from Hatsuno Inouye’s brother Jitsuno Morikawa, correspondence sent to Arthur Inouye, correspondence sent to Beverly Inouye, and correspondence sent to Zennosuke Inouye. The majority of the correspondence consists of correspondence from Jitsuno Morikawa which was sent before, during, and after his internment experience in the United States.

Registration and identification certificates

Series consists of Chinese Immigration (C.I.) registration and identification certificates related to implementing Canada’s Chinese Immigration Act that was law from 1885 to 1947, with amendments made in 1887, 1892, 1900, 1903, and 1923. Certificates were first issued to register and identify Chinese persons entering Canada. This function was expanded with the 1923 amendment requiring registration and identification of all Chinese persons residing in the country, immigrant and Canadian-born.

The series includes the most common C.I. certificates issued before the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act banned practically all further Chinese entry, therefore commonly known as the Chinese Exclusion Act:
-The C.I.5 certificate issued in relation to the head tax payment required for Chinese entry to Canada, commonly known as the head tax certificate. Early versions of the certificate in use before 1912 are present.
-C.I.36 certificate issued in exchange for a C.I.5 certificate issued before 1912 that had no photograph.
-C.I.30 certificate issued to a Chinese person entering Canada belonging to a class with exemption from paying the head tax.
-C.I.28 certificate issued to replace a lost or destroyed C.I.5 or C.I.30 certificate.

The series includes a large number of C.I.45 certificates created in 1923 and 1924. The certificate was used to implement Section 18 of the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act that required the registration of all Chinese residing in Canada within twelve months. It was issued as proof of registration of a Canadian-born Chinese who did not possess an entry certificate for the registration stamp.

Also included in the series are samples of lesser-known C.I. certificates and records, including the C.I.4, C.I.10, C.I.18 and C.I.18a, C.I.46, and C.I.50.

The series includes a small number of N.F.63 certificates related to Chinese entry to the Dominion of Newfoundland. Newfoundland’s Act Respecting the Immigration of Chinese Persons (commonly known as the Newfoundland Chinese Immigration Act) was in force from 1906 until Newfoundland and Laborador joined Confederation in 1949.

A small number of certificates relates to birth in Canada, travel documentation, registration as overseas Chinese with the Chinese government, and Canadian citizenship received following the repeal of the Chinese Immigration Act in 1947.

Agreements.

Series contains agreements and licenses related to the British Columbia Lumber Manufacturers Association. Material consists of register of Provincial License Berths and B.C. Timber Licence Owners in Good Standing. The series also includes the BCLMA’s certificate of incorporation and Companies’ Act.

Poetry

Series contains three typescript copies of poems written by Janet Jenkins in the 1950s.

Shingle boycott.

Series contains records relating to the Consolidation of Red Cedar Shingles Association of British Columbia’s involvement in the shingle boycott. Material consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and letters concerning the boycott of Canadian shingles in the United States. The majority of the press clippings are from various newspapers in Seattle, Washington.

Reports

Series consists of a report on the potential development of the Coast Range Steel Limited Company (1930-1932) and copies of newspaper reports, resolutions, briefs, and submissions concerning the threat posed to the salmon fishing industry by the
construction of hydro-electric dams.

Photos of events and activities in British Columbia

This series focuses on images of notable events, as well as scenes of everyday life and activity in British Columbia. Events depicted include construction (the building of the Lions Gate Bridge) and destruction (notably a sequence of photographs showing the 1938 fire at CPR Pier D in Vancouver), as well as public gatherings like parades and celebrations, such as the 1936 Golden Jubilee of Vancouver's Chinatown. There are also high-profile visits featuring the Governor-General the Duke of Connaught (1912), and Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) in 1919.

Everyday life photographs focus on work scenes and industry, shipping, pastimes and recreation. These include images of patriotic activities during World War II.

Many of the photographs have provenance or other identifying information written on the back, including the original location of the photograph if it is a copy from another archives or collection. Some photographs are accompanied by photocopies of newspaper coverage and other information on the event pictured.

Family history

Series consists of a history of the Trutch family written by Mrs. Charlotte E.C. Morgan-Kelly.

Handbooks and Journals

Series contains several handbooks regarding Swan's field of engineering, including one handbook with Swan as one of the authors. Also contains journals, pamphlets, and news clippings related to Swan.

White River Lumber Company records

Series consists of legal records and miscellanea related to the White River Lumber Co. Legal records include permits, memoranda of agreement, tie notices, and land contracts pertaining to the company’s logging rights. Miscellanea include maps (mostly road maps of Wisconsin and Minnesota), press clippings regarding the company, and photographs.

Minutes

Series consists of minutes for several political organizations in which Shepherd was involved. Includes some minutes of regular and executive meetings of the Provincial Council of the CCF, 1939 to 1947; minutes of the South Westminster CCF Club, 1951-1956 ; and a register of delegates to the Delta District Council, 1935-1950.

Financial records

Series consists of textual records related to the family's finances. Records include accounting and ledger books that have financial information related to the personal and farm expenses, time cards from Zennosuke Inouye's job during internment, tax records belonging to Beverly Inouye, and records relating to Zennosuke's Old Age Pension claims.

Francis Millerd journals and day planners

Series contains journals and day planners written by Francis Millerd. While the majority of these items contain information pertaining to day to day business ventures of the <i>Francis Millerd & Company Ltd.</i>, some of the diaries contain personal anecdotes and information pertaining to Millerd's previous business ventures.

Speeches and Writings

Series consists of speeches and other writings by Doyle and others relating to the British Columbia fishing industry.

Series consists of transcripts of correspondence and other records in the fonds, as well as transcripts of a few items from other sources .

Subject file

Series is largely composed of correspondence files regarding publication of W.H. White's books, especially publication of subsequent editions with various publishers. Some files in the series relate to controversies with which W.H. White was involved.

Land records

Series consists of records related to the land Zennosuke Inouye owned which includes property tax assessments, property value assessments related to the time of Zennosuke's internment, correspondence related to Zennosuke's Solider Settlement claims, and information regarding the general restitution efforts by various Japanese Canadian associations.

Correspondence

The series consists of handwritten and typed letters, as well as telegrams relating to the industry. This is the largest series in the fonds, and contains information relating to many aspects of the fish canning industry as well as the individuals who worked at inverness. A majority of the correspondence is between the Inverness cannery and the head office of J.H. Todd and Sons located in Victoria British Columbia. Other correspondence is between the cannery and other related companies such as lumber, boat manufacturers, and cannery equipment providers.
