Biographical history

Trude Fleischmann (1895-1990) was a successful commercial photographer during the interwar period in Vienna. Her portraits of Austrian performing arts celebrities filled magazines across Europe and helped to establish her as one of the premier photographers of her day. Trude studied photography at the same school as Hanne -- the “Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Photographie und Reproduktionsverfahren” (Teaching and Research Institute for Photography and Reproduction Processes) – and opened her own studio in 1920. Following the Anschluss, Trude fled Europe, immigrating to the United States with the help of us a friend. In New York, she continued to find success as a photographer, opening a new studio and taking pictures of culturally significant émigrés, fashion models, and cityscapes.
