Thomas McDonald's career was devoted to the urban development of Vancouver, B.C. In addition to his efforts with the Lower Mainland Regional Planning Board and the Greater Vancouver Regional District, McDonald also worked on the Peace River Hydro Dam and the planned community of Kitimat, B.C.
