Detective and Murder Mystery series

Series consists of Messenger's works of fiction, detective story and murder mystery, including his manuscripts, outlines, notes, correspondence with publishers, and the final manuscript of A Necessary End, a murder mystery co-authored by Messenger with his wife Ann under the pseudonym of Edmund Carey.

William Herbert New fonds

Works represented in this series include the Four Hemispheres (1971), Voice and Vision (1972), Modern Canadian Essays (1976), Active Voice (1986), Modern Stories in English (1975), Canadian Short Fiction: From Myth to Modern (1986, 1992), Literature in English (1993), Canadian Literature (1966-177, 1994, 2002) and A 20th Century Anthology (1984).

Miscellaneous series

The series consists of general correspondence and includes personal materials, teaching aids, records about a Canadian literature correspondence course taught by New, talks given by New, and other miscellaneous materials he collected.

Executive Correspondence series

Series consists of correspondence of executive members reflecting a range of CSECS's administrative and operational issues and activities, including funding and financial administration of meetings and conferences, administration of membership lists and collection of fees, grant applications and general revenue.

Records Relating to Conferences and Annual General Meetings series

Series consists of correspondence, notices, programmes and agendas, registration forms, memoranda, invoices, rejected paper proposals, press releases and press clippings. The bulk of the records reflect activities directed toward the planning and organizing of annual general meetings and academic conferences that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Helen Dahlstrom fonds

Fonds consists of records generated by Helen Dahlstroms activities in her capacity as a pianist, accompanist, music teacher, choir conductor, examiner, adjudicator, and national, provincial and international arts and music boards. The records relate to personal and administrative daily activities concerning music and the arts, mainly in western Canada and to a lesser extent in the United States, England, France and Africa. The records consist of personal and administrative correspondence, newspaper clippings, concert programs, newsletters of music associations, bibliographies of chief Canadian composers, material relating to music teaching, histories of music associations and musicians, curriculum vitae, speeches, Canadian music sheets, jury lists and schedules of music examinations, music evaluation notes, financial records, grant proposals, promotional material, annual reports of music associations, minutes of meetings of music associations, and miscellaneous material. In addition to the textual records, the fonds consists of a small number of photographs. The records have been arranged into the following series:

Correspondence series

The series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence with friends, fellow writers, publishers and organizations. A large proportion of the correspondence consists of printed emails. The emails were printed out and placed in folders by the donor. Please see the Digital Media series for further correspondence.

Personal Papers series

The series includes correspondence, legal documents, certificates, written verse, and various written memorabilia and artifacts acquired by Sedgewick and his family.

Selected photographs from this and other series have been digitized and included in UBC Archives’ Historical Photograph Database UBC 25.1.

Purcell Range Study series

Series consists of correspondence, proposals, study summaries, reports, briefs, invoices, newspaper clippings, notes, maps and press releases about Chamber's role as Study Coordinator in the Purcell Range Study.

Audio series

The series comprises a single recording of a broadcast interview with Johnson relating to his book John Jessup: Gold seeker and educator.

Art series

The series consists of eight numbered woodcut prints by Johnson. It was originally sold to James Thornton in 1982 or 1983.

Correspondence series

The series consists of incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence generated and received by Johns.

Notes series

The series consists of handwritten and typed notes and excerpts generated by Johns, including speeches, lectures, and research.

Jane Rule fonds

The fonds consists of notes, manuscripts, drafts, galleys, and correspondence relating to Rule's published and unpublished novels and short stories. The fonds also includes biographical and autobiographical material, college papers, teaching records, non- fiction manuscripts, typescript copies of book reviews by Rule, and personal and professional correspondence. Also included are numerous photographs, maintained both singly and in photograph albums, as well as digital images. Rule's collection of
reviews of her work, audio recordings of interviews and readings, her Orders of Canada and B.C. certificates, and the first XTRA! West Jane Rule Memorial Writer of the Year Award are also included.

Reviews series

The series consists of reviews of Rule's work. The material is either arranged alphabetically by author or by book title.

Family Correspondence sub-series

The sub-series consists of correspondence between Jane Rule and members of her family, primarily letters written by Jane to her parents, which were eventually returned to her. Also included are some letters from her father, brother, sister, and nephew. Files also contain greeting cards, postcards, and clippings. Finally, a correspondence file from March Cost, a British author and family friend, addressed primarily to Jane's mother.

Glass Slides, Negatives, and Film series

The series consists of photo prints, glass slides, and negatives used by Turnbull in his teaching. The numbers assigned to the various small boxes have been retained. The series also includes a 16 mm film titled Metal Crystals, Microscopic Technique.

Keith Maillard fonds

The fonds consists of manuscripts of his novels and short stories, issues of underground newspapers, audio recordings of Maillard's radio shows, musical scores, correspondence with other writers, and reference files for his works. It also contains extensive electronic backups of his manuscripts, digital notes, and journals on floppy diskettes. It also contains artwork and photographs of important objects, people, and places.

Biographical Series

Series consists of assorted material pertaining to George Curtis and a list of select papers by Curtis. Also included are autobiographical notes written by George Curtis about his own life (titled “memoranda”), as well as discussions with others and supporting documentation recalling his role in various events and legal cases – these were acquired in the 2014 accession.

Articles, Talks and Notes series

Series consists of assorted material pertaining to George Curtis and a list of select papers by Curtis. Post-Secondary Studies series

Series consists of University of Toronto’s M.A thesis (1933), class assignments and syllabi from Columbia University (1936-1939) and finally, class notes and lists from the University of Chicago (1958-1959).

Course Materials series

This series consists of Asian Studies course lecture notes, reading lists and course outlines from five specific courses: Asian Studies 105, 330, 400, 422 and 423. Howes notes in this series reveal how these five courses developed and changed over time.

Laurence Ricou fonds

The fonds consists of Ricou's correspondence during his teaching careers at the University of Lethbridge and UBC. The fonds also includes records relating to his involvement with the Association of Canadian University Teachers of English (ACUTE), book reviews, negotiated grants, Literary History of Canada, Canada research fellowships and a summer course taught on the writings of Malcolm Lowry. The fonds also contains research information pertaining to the life and work of Canadian author Patricia Blondal.

Lecture Materials series

Series consists of textual materials created or acquired by Fritz Lehmann in the course of his teaching duties. The materials include research notes, lecture materials, course hand-outs, copies of research papers written by students, and newspaper and magazine clippings. It is arranged in the following sub-series: General, Medieval India / Mughal Empire, British India / India Since 1947, India / South Asia, East Asia, Islam, Africa, and Modernization (History 202). These sub-series largely reflect the original order in which the fonds was acquired.

Course Materials series

Series consists of textual materials used by Lehmann in developing and teaching his courses, including lecture materials, course hand-outs, and papers written by students. The files are arranged by course number.

Publications series

The series consists of copies of Lehmann's published articles in manuscript form and as journal clippings or off-prints. The files are arranged alphabetically by article title.
