Elements of Writing series

Series consists of records about Elements of Writing: a Process Rhetoric for Canadian Students (previously called "Essentials of Writing"), a writing guide co-authored by Messenger and Peter A Taylor and published in 1984. These records include correspondence, notes, drafts, reviews, permission forms, and revisions.

Conradiana series

Series consists of records about Messenger's role as the Canadian National Editor of Conradiana between 1969 to 1980. These records include correspondence, notes, clippings, drafts and annotated copies of articles and reviews, and revisions.

Prentice-Hall Canada series

Series consists of records about Messenger's miscellaneous editorial and review projects for Prentice-Hall Canada Inc. These records include an annotated policy document and correspondence.

UBC English Department series

Series consists of records of William Messenger's years with the UBC English Department. There are four subseries: Academic Teaching Career subseries, ComPost subseries, Course Materials subseries and Miscellaneous subseries.

Student Records series

Series consists of Messenger's records as an undergraduate student at the University of Washington (1955-1956), a graduate student at Cornell University (1957-1959) and a post-graduate student at UCLA at Berkeley (1960-1966). These records include correspondence, student papers, artwork, designs and pencil drawings (thumbnail faculty drawings), manuscripts, notebooks, examinations, assignments, and transcripts.

Detective and Murder Mystery series

Series consists of Messenger's works of fiction, detective story and murder mystery, including his manuscripts, outlines, notes, correspondence with publishers, and the final manuscript of A Necessary End, a murder mystery co-authored by Messenger with his wife Ann under the pseudonym of Edmund Carey.

Works represented in this series include the Four Hemispheres (1971), Voice and Vision (1972), Modern Canadian Essays (1976), Active Voice (1986), Modern Stories in English (1975), Canadian Short Fiction: From Myth to Modern (1986, 1992), Literature in English (1993), Canadian Literature (1966-177, 1994, 2002) and A 20th Century Anthology (1984).

Miscellaneous series

The series consists of general correspondence and includes personal materials, teaching aids, records about a Canadian literature correspondence course taught by New, talks given by New, and other miscellaneous materials he collected.

Executive Correspondence series

Series consists of correspondence of executive members reflecting a range of CSECS's administrative and operational issues and activities, including funding and financial administration of meetings and conferences, administration of membership lists and collection of fees, grant applications and general revenue.

Records Relating to Conferences and Annual General Meetings series

Series consists of correspondence, notices, programmes and agendas, registration forms, memoranda, invoices, rejected paper proposals, press releases and press clippings. The bulk of the records reflect activities directed toward the planning and organizing of annual general meetings and academic conferences that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Course Co-ordination

Team meetings co-ordinated efforts by faculty to impart consistency and
high standards to courses offered, and facilitate communications among instructors in the nursing program.

Series consists of minutes of meetings and materials related to the offering of courses in the nursing program.

Visual Art and Literary Project Records

Series documents Mayrs’ visual art work—including his paintings, cartoons, and fine press limited edition books—and exhibitions that have featured it.
Records in this series include photographic reproductions of a large number of Mayrs’s paintings, drawings, books, and other artwork; promotional materials from exhibitions such as posters, flyers, exhibit catalogs; drafts and copies of both published and unpublished political cartoons; original and photographic reproductions of penwork, photographs, and other artwork created by Mayrs specifically for his books, including for un-published and in-progress works; and press clippings and correspondence specifically pertaining to Mayrs’s work in the visual arts.

B.C. Young New Democrats

Series consists of records related to Johnson’s membership in the British Columbia Young New Democrats and his service as President of the organization in 1970.
Records consist of newspaper clippings, minutes, agendas, press releases, convention materials, publications, policy documents, correspondence and membership lists.

Collected Campaign and Labour Ephemera

Series consists of Johnson’s collection of campaign and labour relations ephemera from the 1960s through the 1980s. Materials also include documents related to the Socialist International Congress and the International Council of Social Democratic Women, both held in Vancouver, B.C. in 1978.
Records consist of campaign brochures, newspaper clippings, labour and politics pamphlets, campaign posters, name badges, matchbooks, a plastic canvasers kit, publications, policy documents, conference materials and the like.

Medical Practice

Series consists of records relating to Dr. Ford’s medical practice in Burnaby, volunteer time spent in the Mountain Rescue Group, Dominica, and Bangladesh, as well as memberships to the Federation of Medical Women of Canada and other professional organizations. Dr. Ford opened her own medical practice in Burnaby in 1954 and eventually added three partners to keep up with the high demand. Dr. Ford also spent her time volunteering with the Mountain Rescue Group, rescuing stranded hikers in BC wilderness. In addition, she volunteered her time in Dominica in 1967 and 1969 caring for children; in 1991 she also went to Bangladesh to aid victims of a devastating natural disaster. Records also relate to her service as the B.C. Branch President of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada and also as the National President in 1973. Personal Papers series

The series includes correspondence, legal documents, certificates, written verse, and various written memorabilia and artifacts acquired by Sedgewick and his family.

Selected photographs from this and other series have been digitized and included in UBC Archives’ Historical Photograph Database UBC 25.1.

Purcell Range Study series

Series consists of correspondence, proposals, study summaries, reports, briefs, invoices, newspaper clippings, notes, maps and press releases about Chamber's role as Study Coordinator in the Purcell Range Study.

Audio series

The series comprises a single recording of a broadcast interview with Johnson relating to his book John Jessup: Gold seeker and educator.

Art series

The series consists of eight numbered woodcut prints by Johnson. It was originally sold to James Thornton in 1982 or 1983.

Correspondence series

The series consists of incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence generated and received by Johns.

Notes series

The series consists of handwritten and typed notes and excerpts generated by Johns, including speeches, lectures, and research.

Reviews series

The series consists of reviews of Rule's work. The material is either arranged alphabetically by author or by book title.

Glass Slides, Negatives, and Film series

The series consists of photo prints, glass slides, and negatives used by Turnbull in his teaching. The numbers assigned to the various small boxes have been retained. The series also includes a 16 mm film titled Metal Crystals, Microscopic Technique.

Family photographs

Series consists of photographs taken by and of the Whitham and Zoellner family members. Photographs depict subjects such as Dorothy Whitham-Zoellner and family, J.G. Whitham, George Leonard Zoellner and Blanche Hart, J.D. Whitham and Florence Bartlett Clements, and some unidentified portraits. Other photographs show various scenic locations around the Okanagan. Some photographs have been pasted onto pages and have not yet been separated.

Dorothy and W.J. Zoellner home movies

Series consists of Dorothy and W.J. Zoellner’s family home movies. All the movies were captured on 8mm film. Home movies depict various family events such as school events, family vacations, weddings, and new babies.

Literary Promotion and Publicity

Series consists of publicity and promotional materials related to McCaslin’s literary work and activities between 1976 and 2023. Substantial written and email correspondence appear in the series between McCaslin and editors, contributors, publishers, artists, collaborators, event coordinators, literary colleagues and friends. Reviewers and publishers which McCaslin worked with appear in the files, along with reviews, feedback and comments received from colleagues, editors. Materials also relate to planning and coordination of events, book launches, talks, tours, presentations and poetry readings. The series also includes drafts and final versions of speeches and poetry reading packages performed by McCaslin. Newspaper clippings within the series document McCaslin’s personal, professional, and literary activities, publications, events, and other related materials. Promotional material within the series includes posters, bookmarks, pamphlets, invitations, notecards, author biographies, event information, book launch and tour schedules and occasionally draft or preliminary versions of writing, excerpts or photocopies of published works and other related materials. Within several files McCaslin has provided a brief explanation of the materials contained within, along with additional contextual information about the specific publication or evolution of the work over time. These notes indicate major adaptations or whether the writing was included in another edited publication or collection at a later date.

Artist Trading Cards

In the late 1990s, Artists began using the small 2.5-inch by 3.5-inch trading card templates as the basis for a new way to share small format artworks. In the early 2000s, Anna Banana began to create and trade her own cards, amassing a fairly large collection, and producing a significant number of her own card editions. This series is made up of her own creations, as well as cards collected from artists at the trading events which she attended.

This series is mostly made up of trading cards in binders or folders, with some information relating to the development of this art form in the file called “ARTIST TRADING CARDS: The Story.” Banana compiled cards into binders either by year or by significance, and kept her own separate from those which she received from others.

Exhibitions

This series is made up of flyers, exhibition books, reviews and documentation regarding various exhibitions which Anna Banana was involved in creating or curating, such as 20 Years of Fooling Around With A. Banana, The Popular Art of Postal Parody, 45 Years of Fooling Around With A. Banana, and the Color Show. Records were created in the course of the curation of each exhibition, and include letters of introduction, originals and drafts of flyers and exhibition booklets, posters, name tags, and reviews or press of these exhibitions. A number of these exhibitions were retrospectives of Anna’s career, while other were curated to show various elements of mail art or performance.

Biographical Series

Series consists of assorted material pertaining to George Curtis and a list of select papers by Curtis. Also included are autobiographical notes written by George Curtis about his own life (titled “memoranda”), as well as discussions with others and supporting documentation recalling his role in various events and legal cases – these were acquired in the 2014 accession.

Articles, Talks and Notes series

Series consists of assorted material pertaining to George Curtis and a list of select papers by Curtis. Also included are autobiographical notes written by George Curtis about his own life (titled “memoranda”), as well as discussions with others and supporting documentation recalling his role in various events and legal cases – these were acquired in the 2014 accession.

University of British Columbia series

Series consists of miscellaneous records relating to Curtis participation on the University’s Committee on Honorary Degrees, Faculty Committee on Student Affairs and the UBC Senate. Series also consists of materials related to Curtis’ involvement with the Harry Hawthorn Foundation.

Post-Secondary Studies series

Series consists of University of Toronto’s M.A thesis (1933), class assignments and syllabi from Columbia University (1936-1939) and finally, class notes and lists from the University of Chicago (1958-1959).

Course Materials series

This series consists of Asian Studies course lecture notes, reading lists and course outlines from five specific courses: Asian Studies 105, 330, 400, 422 and 423. Howes notes in this series reveal how these five courses developed and changed over time.

Salal series

Series consists of ten cassette tapes of recordings conducted by Laurie Ricou in preparation for his book, Salal: Listening for the Northwest Understory (2007), as well as related correspondence and other textual materials.
