Correspondence Series: 1925-1929

These letters, from a myriad of boyfriends, were kept together as a group by Douglas and attest to her lively social life during the period from her return to Toronto in 1925 after the breakdown of her first marriage until her second marriage in 1929.

Electoral Campaigns

Subseries consists of papers related to provincial and federal electoral campaigns in British Columbia. Manson was often a candidate in these elections, although the series also contains materials related to elections in other districts, such as by-elections in Cranbrook and the Okanagan.

These papers include newspaper articles about campaigns, speech notes, lists of constituents and voters, papers related to the Omineca riding, campaign materials, pamphlets, election results, and correspondence about elections.

Speeches 1990-1994

Subseries consists of files related to speaking engagements and speeches given or planned by Thomas Berger from 1990 to 1994, primarily during tours in China, Japan, South Africa, and South America, on various topics including human rights, the environment, and development, among others.

Advisory Commission on Indian and Inuit Health Consultation subject files

Series consists of subject files, arranged alphabetically, related to the affairs of the Advisory Commission on Indian and Inuit Health Consultation established in 1979 by the federal government of Canada, as well as material assembled for the commissioner’s reference, including correpsondence, drafts of the Commission’s report made in 1980, press clippings, other pertinent reports and policy position papers.

Legal Advocacy

Subseries consists of records related to Manson aiding others with legal matters. The records in this subseries were produced toward the end of Manson's career and after his retirement. These records often pertain to immigration issues, such as communication with governmental departments on behalf of a gardener trying to bring his family over from Hong Kong.

These records include financial records, insurance policies, and correspondence.

Outgoing correspondence

Subseries consists of copies of letters written by Lauk's Executive Assistants from June 1973 to October 1975.

The subseries chiefly consists of ministerial records written and/or collected by Lauk, but also contains personal and political papers The records include correspondence and memos, telegrams, reports and briefs, agreements, transcripts, orders and bills, speeches, news releases, newsletters and circulars, newsclippings, notes, photographs, receipts, invitations, and schedules.

Printed reference material

Subseries contains printed reports on housing, police reform, and Vancouver planning; Legislative publications such as copies of <i>Hansard</i> and <i>Public Acts</i> for 1975; Department of Economic Development publications including a draft version of <i>The North East Report </i> of February 1975, prepared for the Minister by the staff of the Interim Planning Agreement Project, with a transmittal letter from the Deputy Minister and the published summary report released by the Minister in 1975.

Family

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's family.

These records include correspondence with family members, invitations for family events, and papers related to Stella Manson's estate.

Printed Material

Printed material has been glued into both scrapbooks. The pages have been numbered and general notes in each item's record refer to page numbers in the scrapbooks. The brochures located in folder 02-02 were advertisements for Stephen's publications.

Family Finances

Subseries consists of records related to the Manson family's personal finances. These records date from as early as Manson's university days and continue past his death with records produced by other members of the Manson family.

These records include bank statements, receipts, insurance policies, mortgages, tax returns, household valuations, stocks purchased for family members, account books, and ledgers.

Investments & Trusts

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's personal investments, investments made on behalf of others, and trusts managed by Manson. These trusts include the Alexander Malcolm Manson Trust (often abbreviated as AMMT), the Beckwith Trust, the Stella Manson Trust, and the M. M. Trust. The earliest records in this subseries were created while Manson was attending law school and continue until shortly after Manson's death.

Records in this subseries include stock certificates, annual reports, shareholder reports, licenses, leases, land and road surveys, statistics, meeting minutes, statements of return, balance sheets and ledgers, and correspondence with trustors and with companies. Mining companies are particularly well-represented among Manson's records, most notably Germansen Mines Limited. Other investments represented include oil companies and laundries.

Education

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's education. These records are predominantly related to his time at the University of Toronto, where he belonged to University College, although a small number of records from his time at Osgoode Hall Law School, Niagara Falls Collegiate Institute, and public school can also be found in this subseries.

The records in this subseries include diplomas and certificates, examination grades, examination papers, pamphlets, student newspapers and newsletters, invitations and programmes from university events, class reunions and alumni events, lecture notes, and textbooks.

C.D.C Press Releases & Project Records & Resolutions

File consists of press releases, letters to editors, resolutions taken at meetings, and open letters from C.D.C. to the Canadian parliament, Canadian cabinet ministers, the Prime Minister of Canada, the United Nations, the Chilean Embassy in Ottawa, and several Chilean government officials in Santiago. File also contains some pamphlets and flyers, and some correspondence.

General Correspondence

Subseries contains traditional and email correspondence from 1972-2012 covering a range of subjects related to Howard’s writing career, her involvement with The Writer’s Union of Canada, her position as an instructor with Capilano College, her political interests, and her personal life. Material related to Howard’s writing career includes correspondence with literary agents and fan mail regarding “The Manipulator” and “A Memoir of Friendship.” Notable correspondents include Don Shields, Anne Giardini, short-story author Merna Summers, politician Iona Campangola, and author Janet McNaughton. Howard also sent letters to writers to express her appreciation for their work, including Margaret Atwood, Alberto Manguel, and Susan Hill. Related ephemera in the subseries includes grade reports and registration forms for classes taken at Capilano College, a brochure on literary agents, photocopied and printed articles, and reviews and clippings.

Upper Canada

Sub-series consists of an original land deed, with the Great Seal of Upper Canada attached, and warrants, with accompanying accounts and receipts, issued by Sir Peregrine Maitland, the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, between 1818 and 1828.

Documents of a national significance

Sub-series consists of records pertaining to the history of more than one region, or to Canada in general. Includes an original financial statement of Sir Alexander MacKenzie's account with the North West Company in 1807, an original 1833 manuscript letter from Edward Ellice to Samuel Gerrard concerning financial matters in the Canadas, as well as transcript copies of letters by William Lyon Mackenzie and Edward Blake.

Legal documents

Sub-series consists of legal documents of Sir Joseph William Trutch, including his last will and testament and an indenture pertaining to family financial arrangements in preparation for the marriage of his brother John in 1870.

Envelopes

Sub-series consists of envelopes originally containing correspondence addressed to the Trutch family, particularly to John Trutch.

General research material

The subseries contains newspaper and magazine clippings, index card notes by Seaholm on Swedish Canadians and Canadian history, photographs of Swedish Canadians, a handmade manuscript compiled by Seaholm of a chronology of Swedish Canadian contributions to the development of British Columbia, and a miscellaneous collection of stories on immigration in America. Clippings are in English and Swedish.

Civil Cases

Subseries consists of court documents relating to civil cases in British Columbia between 1864 and 1903. The cases comprise a variety of document types, including: judge’s orders; affidavits; writs of summons; correspondence; bills of costs; jury lists; judgments; notices; statements of account; motions; bonds; speakers’ certificates; indentures; agreements; receipts of sale; complaints; notices of intention; mortgages; requests; wills; and subpoenas. As a whole, they are indicative of the development of civil and criminal law in the region at the time, closely reflecting British standards and precedence. Differences did develop, however, as circumstances required.

It is important to note that the time period represented in these cases includes years before and after the colonies were converged on August 6th, 1866. Before the unification, the Colony of Vancouver Island and the Colony of British Columbia were separate entities in which civil suits at the local level were a vital part of the decentralized colonial government. Initially, the mainland was governed from New Westminster, but once they were merged into the new Colony of British Columbia, governance took place in Victoria on Vancouver Island.

Speeches 1977-1984

Subseries consists of files related to speaking engagements and speeches given or planned by Thomas Berger from 1977 to 1984, for audiences in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United States, on a wide variety of themes including the environment, native rights, northern development, and Canadian culture, among others.

Personal Files

Sub-series consists of Personal [Personnel] files of individual employees. The files consist of copies of memorandums received by the union that relate to issues concerning Imperial Oil Ltd. and individual union members. These issues include absenteeism, performance interviews, and the wearing of beards.
