Great fire, New Westminster, B.C.
Caption: "War? No! This is a picture showing the remains of a Bank and Commercial building on Columbia Street, New Westminster, after the Great Fire had cooled down. In 1898, just 44 years ago. Shank's mare, Buckboards, Carriages and Bicycles were all employed by Vancouver Citizen to go to view the big smoke. Whole blocks of substantial buildings were heaps of debris that looked like the "Ruins of Pompeii." Note the type of Hose-Waggon, the Christy still hats, and one with the (then) popular white trimmings. To photographers: This is an "Aristo-Platino" P.O.P. print. Negative by Stephen J. Thompson, for whom I worked, at the premises now occupied by the Eastman Company, during the Klondyke Boom. Print toned 41 years ago. Timms. "
