Financial records

Series consists of financial records of the Sólskin Society during its operation. Records include financial reports; ledger books; treasurer’s books; fundraising plans; and casino fundraising records.

Events and activities

Series consists of records relating to the events organized by the Sólskin Society. Many of the textual records are lists of the yearly events the Society undertook. Records include event calendars; event reports; event planning material and correspondence; invitations; event ephemera and newspaper clippings; Icelandic songs and poems used at events; and guest book of visitors to Sólskin Society events.

Administrative records

The series consists of records relating to the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia’s (ICC of BC) administrative functions, such as records related to its day to day business operation. Records include constitutions, bylaws, certificates, and procedures; membership lists and procedures; minutes reports from executive and annual general meetings; charitable status records; building and estate information including, mortgage records; and financial records, such as ledgers and casino records.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence between the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia, other Icelandic organizations such as the Icelandic National League of North America, and the organization’s membership.

Administrative records

The series consists of records relating to the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia’s (IABC) administration, mainly records related to its day to day business operation. Records include correspondence; financial records; and policies and procedures kept by the archives.

Events and activities

Series consists of records relating to the events organized by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC), and Icelandic events attended by the IABC. Records include event planning material and promotions; posters, programmes, and brochures; correspondence and invitations; event ephemera and newspaper clippings; artifacts; and guest books of visitors to IABC events.

Original collections series

Series consists of the original collections acquired and preserved by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC) during its existence.

Series consists of thirteen subseries, which correspond to the creators of the records or the research initiatives surrounding the creation of the records: the Emil Bjarnason collection, Ester Bridge collection, Magnus Eliason collection, Frances Hanson collection, Dora Hatton collection, Keith Hoff collection, Helga Howardson collection, Guðrun Johnson collection, and Lillian Sumarlidason collection, as well as the Point Roberts collection, and the New Iceland Research collection.

Administrative records

The series consists of records relating to the Scandinavian Cultural Society’s administrative functions. Records include the constitution of the society, correspondence, agendas and minutes from executive meetings, and financial reports.

Publications

Series consists of newsletters and other published material by the Scandinavian Cultural Society for purposes of reference and dissemination. Series also includes a run of the Swedish Press Magazine from 1986, which was used as reference material for the publicity for the Scandinavian Festival 1986.

Resident records

Series documents the individuals who resided within the Höfn Care Home in its early years (Höfn I) and contains the medical records of residents in its care. Materials consist of resident medical records as well as home register books. The series also includes a scrapbook, Höfn Resident Biographies and Portraits 1947-1962.

Events and activities

Series consists of records relating to the events organized by the Scandinavian Cultural Society (SCS). Many of the textual records in this series are dedicated to the promotion, publicity, and planning of the Scandinavian Festival 1986. However, the SCS also held Midsummer Festivals and other Scandinavian Fairs after their original purpose was completed in 1986.

Records include programs, news clippings, promotional materials, memos, correspondence, reports, art mock-ups, and guest books. Series also includes videocassettes of the proceedings of the Scandinavian Festival 1986, audio cassettes of some of the speeches made, as well as various videocassettes of other SCS events through the years.

The series consists of records relating to the Icelandic Care Home Höfn Society’s administrative functions, mainly records related to its day to day business operation. Series also consists of the constitution, bylaws, and procedures held by the Society. Records include correspondence; minutes from board of director and annual general meetings; financial records; building and estate information including, mortgage records, estate papers, insurance papers, and renovation specifications; charitable status records; the Society’s original 1947 constitution; certificate of incorporation and constitutions; bylaws, policies, and procedures; and guest books of visitors to the Care Home.

Series consists of newsletters and other published material by the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia (ICC of BC) for purposes of reference and dissemination as well as materials related to the Club’s library holdings. Records include newsletters, brochures, analogue and digital copies of the library catalogue, newsletter formatting materials, and one manuscript.

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs and negatives related to past Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia (ICC of BC) events, photographs taken of Club executive, membership, and scholarship winners.

Series consists of calendars and published material by the Icelandic National League of North America for purposes of reference and dissemination. Series also includes published newsletters and records of activities undertaken by the “Uff-Dah” Viking Association.

Notably, the Society collected and published Sólskin Memoirs, in which there are two copies and the source material available in the subfonds. Records also include published pamphlets about the history of the Society and calendars.

Events and programs

Series consists of records relating to the events organized by the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia (ICC of BC) as well as the programs that they have implemented for ICC of BC members. Records for events include brochures, ephemera, and photographs from the Ivory Gavel presentation. Records related to ICC of BC programming include program procedures and specifications, promotional material, correspondence and photographs documenting the winners of the scholarship program.

Series consists of manuscripts and published material made or received by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia for purposes of reference and dissemination. Records include plays, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, magazines, and newspapers.

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs and negatives related to past Society board members, Society events, and the renovations and remodelling done to the Care Home itself. The series also includes the Icelandic Old Folks Home, Höfn Photo Essay completed in 1973 which candidly depicts the residents of the Care Home.

Administrative records

The series consists of administrative records made and received by the Icelandic National League of North America (INL of NA). It consists of minutes and report from board of director and annual general meetings held by the national chapter and the Vancouver chapter of the INL of NA. Series also consists of correspondence between the Vancouver chapter of the INL of NA, other chapters of the organization other Icelandic organizations such as the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia, and the organization’s membership. Lastly, the series contains records of the founding history of the organization, as well as the constitution and bylaws held by the INL of NA. The records include the Society’s constitution and bylaws and records pertaining to their revision, its newspapers describing its history, as well as a five year strategic plan created in 1991.

Administrative records

The series consists of minutes from the Women’s Auxiliary of the Icelandic Lutheran Church, event calendars of the Women’s Auxiliary, as well as annual reports. Series also documents the founding history of the Icelandic Lutheran Church and its subsequent development over time. Records include one scrapbook made by the church, and other published and unpublished church histories.

Programs

Series consists of records relating to the programs that the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC) has implemented during its existence, notably its language learning program, and oral history and community biography collection program. Records related to IABC programming include: correspondence; language learning material; obituaries; personal and family histories; historical typesetting story notebooks; ephemera and newspaper clippings; and audio cassettes containing the biographies and stories of community members.

Musical materials

Series consists of both published sacred, secular, and popular music as well as hand-copied, transcribed music, collected by the members of the Icelandic community in Vancouver. Records include manuscript sheet music, part books, solo sheet music, and etude books; as well as vinyl recordings of various Icelandic music. Documents are arranged into files according to genre of music and language.

The music was collected from V. Baldwinson, the Icelandic Lutheran Church choir, H. Johnson, G. Thorleifson, Anna Camb, Gwen Dowding, E. Sigmar, R. Einarson, J. Goodmundson, R. Rasmussen, O. Stefanson, T. Thorsteinsson, O. Howardson, T. Friđliefosn, R. Ásgeirsson, j. Reykdal, A. Sveinsson, S. Sigurdson, and B. Gudmundson.

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs taken or collected by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC). Photographs document events, exhibits, and research initiatives, and some photographs are previous collections acquired by the IABC during its existence.

Notable collections are photographs documenting Sunnybrook (File 46-11, including original collections by Edna Proctor, Dorothea Calverley, Thora Howell, Doug Palsson, Lucile Palsson, and Carol Greenhalgh); photographs taken by the curator of the IABC, Robert Ásgeirsson, organized by subject and community event (Files 15-03 to 15-43); and historical photographs of Hunter Island taken by E.J. Fríðleifson and research completed about the communities on Hunter Island (Files 46-12 to 46-18).

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs taken at the Scandinavian Festival 1986, and photographs of Society events. Also included in the series is one audio cassette that accompanied the Scandinavian Festival 1986 slide show created by the Society.
