Publications

Sub-series consists of published copies of chapbooks, monographs, journals, and conference proceedings that Miki wrote, co-wrote, edited, co-edited, and contributed to. Volumes are arranged chronologically according to date of publication except for poetry chapbooks which are located at the beginning of the sub-series.

Redress book records

Subseries consists of edited drafts of “Redress,” records from the Redress Exhibit at the Japanese Canadian National Museum, correspondence with publishers and editors, as well as publicity materials including transcriptions from interviews and book reviews.

Flow

Series contains one file with various poems published in Flow (2018).

Justice in our time: the Japanese canadian redress settlement

Sub-series consists of correspondence, research notes, photographs, and publicity materials related to a pamphlet, Justice in our time: the Japanese Canadian redress settlement, published in 1988, and to a book of the same title published in 1991. Mild co-edited the pamphlet and the book with Cassandra Kobayashi. The series contains drafts of the pamphlet and records relating to its Japanese translation, as well as successive drafts of sections of the monograph and the entire manuscript. The photographs contained in this series are reproductions of images of Japanese Canadians from throughout the twentieth century, many of which appear in the book Justice in our lime.

Random access file

Sub-series consists of five complete and successive drafts of the manuscript of random access file, a book of Miki’s poetry published in 1995. Following the manuscript drafts is a file of notes describing changes to be made to different versions of the manuscript.

Theses: MA and PhD

Sub-series consists of copies of Miki’s MA thesis, submitted to the English
Department at Simon Fraser University in 1969, and his PhD thesis, submitted to the English Department at the University of British Columbia in 1980.

Writing through race

Subseries includes tape recording of all the session for the “Writing through Race” conference Miki coordinated as chair of the Racial Minority Writers’ Committee of the Writers’ Union of Canada as well as photographs taken by photographers at the conference.

Enomoto, Randy

Sub-series consists of records made or received by Randy Enornoto which he transferred to Miki for research purposes. The sub-series contains agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence and memoranda, notes, research materials, news clippings, drafts of a manuscript, and other records related to Enomoto’s involvement in the JCCP, the Greater Vancouver JCCA, and the NAJC in the early 1980s.

Japanese Canadian Citizen’s Association

Series consists of a transcript of an interview with Mrs. Kabayakawa, a prominent member of the Japanese Canadian Citizen Association (JCCA), a copy of the program from her funeral and speech given by Miki in her honour as well as photographs of Mrs. Kabayakawa as a young woman. The series also contains a copy of the “Redress for Japanese Canadians Information Package” created by the Vancouver Chapter of the JCCA which includes membership information, donation forms, volunteer applications, a chronological fact sheet of “pre-war discrimination, wartime interment, and redress for Japanese Canadians” from 1877-1980, an update on Redress written in 1984, newsletters of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) and photocopies of articles related to Redress. The series also consists of recordings of NAJC meetings. For other relevant records from previous accruals see earlier finding aids.

Subject files

Sub-series consists of records related to Miki’s personal, academic, literary, and political activities. The sub-series documents Miki’s participation on award selection committees, his trips abroad, his communications and work with the Canada Council for the Arts, his participation in various literary and political projects, and his dealings with Simon Fraser University, among other subjects. The sub-series contains award certificates presented to Miki, correspondence, notes, reports, travel itineraries, grant applications, research files, articles, essays, and scripts, publication agreements, Miki’s curriculum vitae, news clippings (many featuring Miki), audio recordings of Joy Kogawa speaking and reading and audio and video recordings of Miki speaking, reading, performing, and being interviewed for various radio, television, film and other programs.

General works correspondence, manuscripts and other material.

Subseries consists of correspondence, manuscripts, and drafts relating to the research, writing and publication of various works by Miki including books, poems, articles and correspondence with publishers (including Mercury Press Publishers Limited and Talon Books). The series also includes photographs and negatives of images used in several of Miki’s books including “This is my Own,” and scanned images used for “Justice in our Time.”

Japanese Canadian Citizen’s Association (Greater Vancouver JCCA)

Sub-series consists of agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence and memoranda, reports, notes, news clippings, transcripts of forum proceedings, published guides, financial reports, proposals, and other records related to Miki’s involvement with the Greater Vancouver JCCA. 7 photographic contact sheets illustrate the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in Kaslo, British Columbia. The sub-series also contains audio recordings of community meetings and forum proceedings, Greater Vancouver JCCA Redress Committee meetings and elections and general JCCA meetings, and broadcast interviews relating the activities of the JCCA. Miki sat on the Greater Vancouver JCCA Board of Directors and served as Chair of the Greater Vancouver JCCA Redress Committee between 1984 and 1988. The sub-series documents Miki’s activities in both these capacities in particular, and the activities and campaigns of the organization in general. Board of Directors records and Redress Committee records are arranged chronologically followed by alphabetically arranged subject files.

George Bowering bibliography research, writing and publication records.

Sub-series consists of correspondence, manuscripts, drafts, photographs,
photocopied documents, reviews, articles, and other records relating to Miki’s
research for and writing and publication of A Record of Writing: An Annotated & Illustrated Bibliography of George Bowering. Includes some photographs of George Bowering, as well as copies of correspondence between Bowering and many prominent Canadian authors.

Redress research

Sub-series consists of photocopies and original materials gathered by Miki for research purposes. These include minutes of meetings, articles and essays, conference programs and proceedings, copies of American and Canadian legislation, reports, news clippings and serials, bibliographies, monographs. and other material related to Japanese Americans, Japanese Canadians, their internment during WWII, and the redress movement. The sub-series contains audio recordings of broadcast interviews and interviews conducted by Miki and a video recorded program on redress-related topics. These records reflect Miki’s research activities and may also serve other researchers interested in these subjects and issues. Also consists of research materials (including a study conducted by Kundio Hidaka titled “Legal Status of Japanese in Canada”) gathered and annotated by Miki. Subseries also includes photographs from redress related events including the photographs used in the“Japanese Canadian Losses Study” conducted in 1985.

Across currents: canada — Japan minority forum

Sub-series contains correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes, and other records related to Miki’s role in organizing the Injustice conference held in Vancouver in 1992. The sub-series also contains transcripts of presentations made at the conference and drafts of the conference proceedings which Miki co-edited with Scott McFarlane and which were published in 1996. Finally, the sub-series contains research files on the histories and experiences of minority groups represented at the Injustice conference and in the conference proceedings. Records related to conference planning precede the manuscript drafts which are followed by the research files arranged alphabetically according to the name of the minority group.

Saving face: selected poems, 1976-1988

Sub-series consists of drafts of poems considered and selected for Saving face
followed by successive versions of drafts of the manuscript and a copy of the
book jacket.

Surrender

Sub-series consists of two drafts of Surrender, a book of poetry for which Miki
won the Governor General’s Award for Poetry in 2002.

Dolphin SOS

Series includes research materials, posters, and press for Roy and Slavia Miki's book Dolphin SOS (published 2014).

Conferences and events

Sub-series contains records related to conferences, symposia, panels, and other events that Miki attended, presented at, or helped to organize. These include programs and abstracts, correspondence, travel itineraries and invoices, news clippings, application forms, audio and video recordings of proceedings, audio recordings of interviews with Miki regarding the Writing thru race conference, photographs of conference speakers and attendees, and other records. Conferences and events relate to Miki’s literary, academic, and political activities and interests.

The Writer’s Union of Canada (TWUC)

Sub-series consists of records related to Miki’s involvement with the Writer’s
Union of Canada. The sub-series contains agendas and minutes of meetings,
correspondence and memoranda, news clippings, reports, invoices, and other
records.

Editing — Books, pamphlets journals and other works.

Series consists of manuscripts, drafts, correspondence, booklets, research and other material relating to books, pamphlets, and other works edited and/or published by Miki. Includes some files concerning Miki's Pomflit project, material relating to Miki's compilation and publication of Tracing the Paths: Reading & Writing The Martyrology. Also includes files relating to Miki's role as editor of The Line (1983-1989) and West Coast Line (1990-1999) magazines, as well as a proof copy of “Trans.Can.Lit: Resituating the Study of Canadian Literature” edited by Smaro Kamboureli and Roy Miki.

Pacific windows: collected poems of Roy K. Kiyooka

Sub-series consists of copies of poems by Roy Kiyooka, notes and research files, drafts of sections of Pacific windows that Miki wrote including the After Words and a commentary on an interview Miki conducted with Roy Kiyooka, and five complete and successive drafts of the manuscript of this book which Miki edited.

Redress: inside the Japanese Canadian call for justice

Sub-series consists of research notes, interview transcripts, draft fragments, four complete drafts of the manuscript of Redress: inside the Japanese Canadian call for justice, and photographs related to Japanese Canadian internment during WWII and the movement for redress in the 1980s.

Spirit of redress: Japanese Canadians in conference

Notes and correspondence contained in this sub-series document Miki’s role in organizing the Spirit of Redress conference held in Vancouver in 1987. The sub-series contains transcripts of workshops and presentations from the conference and drafts of the manuscript of the conference proceedings which Miki co-edited with Cassandra Kobayashi and which was published in 1989. The process of compiling and publishing the conference proceedings is also reflected in notes, a grant application, and other documents related to financing the project. The sub-series also contains photographs of conference participants and reproductions of historical photographs related to the internment of Japanese Canadians which appear in the published proceedings. Manuscript drafts follow files related to conference planning and coordination of the publication of the proceedings.

This is my own: letters to Wes and other writings on Japanese Canadians, 1941-1948, by Muriel Kitagawa

Sub-series contains photocopies of material gathered by Miki in the course of researching and editing This is my own. The sub-series also contains records related to Mild’s grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, his leave of absence from Simon Fraser University, copies of Muriel Kitagawa’s letters after having been edited by Miki, drafts of the manuscript of the book, and published reviews of the book. Finally, the sub series contains originals and reproductions of photographs of Muriel Kitagawa and other Japanese Canadians and of internment centres and audio recordings of interviews with Muriel Kitagawa’s brother Wes Kitagawa conducted by Miki in Toronto in 1984.

Manuscripts: essays, poems, and presentations

Sub-series consists of drafts of essays, poems, and lectures that Miki wrote. The essays and lectures included in this sub-series are predominantly works of literary criticism related to Canadian poetry and political commentary and analysis on social and cultural issues related to race, racism, multiculturalism, and the Japanese Canadian redress movement. The sub-series also contains essays Miki wrote as a graduate student, a file of drafts related to an issue of the journal Estuaire which Miki guest edited, and reviews by Miki of works by other authors.

Ephemera and memorabilia

Sub-series contains announcements and invitations to literary and cultural events, plaques that Miki was awarded for his literary and political work, a t-shirt and posters advertising Miki’s 1960's rock and roll band Roy Miki and the Downbeats, two t-shirts and buttons advertising the redress movement, broadsheets with poems by Miki and one from the BC Heritage poetry festival which Miki compiled, posters announcing events that Miki participated in and advertising his publications, and two copies of a certificate from the Government of Canada officially acknowledging the redress settlement. Also contains audio discs Miki felt important to include with his work, as well as DVDs that include Miki in some way.

Correspondence

Sub-series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence related to Miki’s personal, academic, literary, and political activities. The sub-series contains cards, notes, letters, and printed email. The sub-series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent or subject.

Japanese Canadian Centennial Project (JCCP) redress committee

Sub-series consists of correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports, notes and a notebook, drafts, news clippings, transcripts and audio recordings of symposia proceedings, a grant application, and other records related to Miki’s participation in the Japanese Canadian Centennial Project, a project which aimed to document and celebrate the history of Japanese presence in Canada. The sub-series also contains a book on Japanese Canadian history prepared and published by the JCCP.

Kobayashi, Cassandra

Sub-series consists of records made or received by Cassandra Kobayashi which she transferred to Miki for research purposes. The sub-series contains agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence and memoranda, notes, reports, research material, financial documents, and other records that Kobayashi produced in her capacity as secretary of the Greater Vancouver JCCA Redress Committee, as assistant to Miki during his term as National redress coordinator, and related to her work on the Strategy Committee of the NAJC.

General events

Subseries consists of correspondence, programs, articles, draft speeches, speaking notes, press clippings, posters, photographs, and slides relating to Miki’s attendance and participation in literary and cultural conferences, panels, talks, and other local, national and international events. The majority of these cultural events concern racism, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and the Japanese Canadian experience. The subseries also includes a photo album documenting Miki’s participation on the Canada Council’s Racial Equity Committee, the 1997 book launch of Roy Kiyooka’s Pacific Windows (edited by Miki), Miki’s 2003 trip to Japan with Hiromi Goto, Miki’s 2003 trip to Berlin with Glen Lowery to present a paper at the Free University of Berlin conference on multiculturalism, Miki’s 1999 trip to Australia with Ashok Mathur, Miki’s trip to the Alberta badlands with Scott McFarland for the Race/Pedagogy retreat, Miki’s 2000 Australia trip with a group of Canadian authors (including Ashok Mathur, Aruna Srivastava, Rajinder Pal, Hiromi Goto, Rita Wong, Larissa Lai, and Tamai Kobayashi), and Miki’s 2001 trip to Calgary for an exhibit curated by Harry Kiyooka.

The subseries includes slides used in a performance of “This is Munal Kitagowa” at Expo ’86 and a painting presented to Miki as a thank you gift for speaking as aguest writer for the “American Odysseys: Literary Explorations of Historic and Current Events in the Multicultural Americas” at Utah State University in 2008.

National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC)

Sub-series contains agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence and memoranda, reports, notes and notebooks, news clippings, published updates and newsletters, research notes, drafts, conference programs, transcripts of conferences and symposia proceedings, the NAJC constitution, and other records related to Miki’s involvement with the NAJC. The sub-series also contains audio recordings of National Redress Committee and National Council meetings and telephone conferences, press conferences, and proceedings of other events. Miki served on the NAJC National Council between 1984 and 1988. He was also officially employed by the NAJC as National redress coordinator for several months in 1985. The sub-series documents Miki’s activities in these and other capacities within the NAJC and the activities of the organization particularly as they relate to the redress movement. General files and National Council records, and Strategy Committee records are arranged chronologically followed by alphabetically arranged subject files.

Subseries includes recordings of Japanese Canadian Redress Committee meetings in Toronto as well as an index to the sound recordings complied by Miki.

Across currents: canada—Japan minority forum

Sub-series contains correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes, and other records reflecting Mild’s role on the organizing committee for the conference Culture in struggle: Canada—Japan minority forum. The conference was held in Vancouver in 1995. The sub-series contains photographs of individuals who participated in the conference as speakers, attendees, and performers and of ceremonies and performances in progress as well as audio recordings of the conference proceedings. Finally, the sub-series contains drafts of the manuscript of the conference proceedings which Mild co-edited with Rita Wong. The proceedings were published as Across Currents: Canada—Japan minority forum in 2001. Files related to conference organizing precede the manuscript drafts.

Mannequin rising

Sub-series consists of drafts and editor notes of Miki's book of poetry titled Mannequin Rising. The back cover on the book reads, "In Mannequin Rising, Miki describes a world of consumerism, and answers the visual cacaphony of commodities and window displays with a series of poems and photomontages that reflect the uncanny juxtapositioning he sees all around him."

West coast line: a journal of contemporary writing and criticism

Sub-series consists of correspondence and other records documenting Miki’s
activities as editor of West coast line followed by drafts of the manuscripts of issues of the journal arranged chronologically according to date of publication and drafts of articles which were submitted to the journal. The sub-series also contains photographs of illustrations and plates appearing in issues of West coast line. Miki founded West coast line (under the title Line) in 1983 and was editor of the journal until 1999.

A record of writing: an annotated and illustrated bibliography of George Bowering and George Bowering selected: poems 1961-1992

Sub-series contains photocopies of material gathered by Miki from the Public Archives of Canada and other sources in the course of compiling A record of writing. The sub-series contains audio tapes of conversations between Miki and Bowering regarding books Bowering published recorded between 1985 and 1989 as well as transcripts of some of those discussions. The sub-series also contains copies of poems by George Bowering and drafts of the manuscript of George Bowering selected. Files related to A record of writing precede those related to George Bowering selected.
