Subseries consists of records related to Manson's education. These records are predominantly related to his time at the University of Toronto, where he belonged to University College, although a small number of records from his time at Osgoode Hall Law School, Niagara Falls Collegiate Institute, and public school can also be found in this subseries.

The records in this subseries include diplomas and certificates, examination grades, examination papers, pamphlets, student newspapers and newsletters, invitations and programmes from university events, class reunions and alumni events, lecture notes, and textbooks.

Personal Life

Series consists of records related to Manson's personal life.

This series has been arranged into seven subseries: Manson's education, his involvement with the Presbyterian Church, his social life, agendas and planners, notes regarding speeches he gave, his estate, and his family.

The fonds consists of records related to British Columbia politician and judge Alexander Malcolm Manson's life. The records in this fonds encompass all aspects of Manson's life and were produced both through his career and in his personal life. Notably, the fonds contains extensive records from Manson's political career, his judicial career, and the investments and trusts he managed. Many areas of Manson's life overlapped considerably, including overlapping careers, and records related to one area of his life may be found among records related to another area.

The contents of this fonds consist predominantly of correspondence, including carbon copies of correspondence sent by Manson. This correspondence pertains both to Manson's career as well as to various parts of his personal life and has been arranged according to the file names used by Manson wherever possible; correspondence that has not otherwise been sorted by Manson has been sorted as "general correspondence," a designation which also includes personal correspondence. Other types of records in this fonds include meeting minutes, court proceedings, financial statements, newspaper clippings, governmental reports, shareholder reports, certificates, invitations and event programmes, and photographs.

The fonds has been arranged into eight series: legal career; political career; judicial career; finances; personal life; Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; general correspondence; and photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera.

Series consists of loose photographs, scrapbooks compiled by Manson, newspaper clippings, and copies of newspapers and newsletters. The scrapbooks in this series contain newspaper clippings, which predominantly relate to his political career.

Family Finances

Subseries consists of records related to the Manson family's personal finances. These records date from as early as Manson's university days and continue past his death with records produced by other members of the Manson family.

These records include bank statements, receipts, insurance policies, mortgages, tax returns, household valuations, stocks purchased for family members, account books, and ledgers.

Finances

Series consists of records related to financial matters that Manson managed. These records were produced over the whole of Manson's life, the earliest dating from while he was attending university.

This series has been arranged into two subseries: the personal finances of Manson and his family, and Manson's investments and trusts.

General Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence. Much of the correspondence in this series was either kept loose or was sorted by Manson alphabetically (using the surname of the correspondent or the subject of correspondence) and by year.

Files in this series often contain correspondence related to multiple areas of Manson's life, both career-related and personal. For example, a file labelled "Loose Correspondence" may contain correspondence related to Manson's political activities, his Masonic activities, his church activities, and social activities.

Social

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's social life. Materials related to events that Manson was invited to are particularly prominent in this subseries, such as luncheons with King George VI and the Queen Mother and later with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.

These records include travel itineraries and travel receipts, Christmas cards, thank you cards, anniversary cards, calling cards, invitations, and seating charts.

Investments & Trusts

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's personal investments, investments made on behalf of others, and trusts managed by Manson. These trusts include the Alexander Malcolm Manson Trust (often abbreviated as AMMT), the Beckwith Trust, the Stella Manson Trust, and the M. M. Trust. The earliest records in this subseries were created while Manson was attending law school and continue until shortly after Manson's death.

Records in this subseries include stock certificates, annual reports, shareholder reports, licenses, leases, land and road surveys, statistics, meeting minutes, statements of return, balance sheets and ledgers, and correspondence with trustors and with companies. Mining companies are particularly well-represented among Manson's records, most notably Germansen Mines Limited. Other investments represented include oil companies and laundries.

Government

Subseries consists of records related Manson's work as a politician and MLA in the British Columbia government, predominantly during his time as Speaker and as Attorney-General and Minister of Labour. The records in this subseries highlight many of Manson's political interests and activities, such as railways and game conservation. Particularly well-represented among this subseries are papers related to the Liquor Control Board, the Workmen's Compensation Board, and records related to Old Age and Mothers' Pensions.

These records include papers from legislative sessions, proposed and enacted legislation, regulations and licences, speeches and speech notes, meeting minutes, recommendations for positions (including police commissioners, notaries public, justices of the peace, and King's Counsel), Attorney-General cases, public accounts, expense reports, royal commissions, governmental reports, governmental publications, and correspondence with various governmental departments.

Law Firm

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's law firm and legal practise. This subseries includes records created both while Manson was based in Prince Rupert as well as after he had relocated to Vancouver. The records in this subseries predominantly pertain to the operation of the firm, such as purchasing furniture, rather than to specific legal cases.

These records include legal documents created by the firm, legal cases and court proceedings, financial records (including profits, budgets, and taxes), and correspondence.
