The History of Nursing Advisory Committee was formed in November 1988 to encourage an interest in and retention of materials relevant to the history of the RNABC.
Subseries consists of agenda, minutes, correspondence and other materials relevant to the mandate of the committee.
The Archives, Artifacts, and Assorted Articles Committee of the BCHNPPG was formed ca. 1992 in order to accommodate artifacts and articles donated by individual nurses. In about 1993 or 1994, under co-chairs Brenda Flynn and Beverly Du Gas, the Committee became conscious of the need to preserve the group’s own records. The name of the committee was changed to the Archives Committee in 1996.
Subseries consists of committee records, including terms of reference and minutes of the Archives, Artifacts and Assorted Articles Committee, and records related to the development of the Group’s policies and procedures regarding archival material.
Lois Blais chaired the Archives Committee for several years.

While an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing, Sheila Zerr devised an instructional program for nurses to increase people’s awareness of non-prescriptions drugs, focusing on ASA (aspirin). Funded by Sterling Drug Ltd., the project was designed to lead to a broader understanding of the drug and its effects. The information was designed to be passed on to nurses, and from them to the wider community.
Subseries consists of records relating to the research and writing on the subject of ASA and its effects.
Subseries consists of audio cassettes containing discussions, interviews and lectures relating to nursing topics. These materials are not strongly related to any subfonds so are arranged under this subseries.

Biennial Business Meeting Minutes and Reports
A business meeting was held in conjunction with each biennial institute to deal with issues affecting the membership.
Biennial Business Meeting Photographs
Subseries consists of fifteen photo albums relating to the 1st to the 13th and 15th Biennial and 4th and 10th National conferences hosted by B.C. Operating Room Nursing Group. Photographs have been removed from the albums and individually described except for those in a peel and stick album for the 1974 meeting.
This committee was formed at the 1991 AGM to begin collecting information and pictures of prominent BC nurses.

This committee promoted in-service workshops and support for new faculty.

Committee on Recruitment/Counseling
Subseries consists of one page of recommendations.
Series consists of programs, proceedings, photographs, and other materials related to the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing conferences.
Photographs in scrapbook format, remain with textual files.
Subseries consists of records and graphic material relating to conferences and displays. Materials relating to the International History of Nursing Conference hosted in Vancouver, 1997 are included. Extensive photographs and textual materials document the many displays prepared and presented by the BCHNS.
This committee discussed clinical placements and matters related to general
overall planning of the program and staff.

University of Victoria professor Dorothy Kergin was Chair of the Nursing Education Council for several years.

Sheila Zerr extended her interest in dolls to the creation of costumes for adults. These were often modelled by Sheila Zerr and others at nursing events, and mounted as exhibits.
Subseries consists of records dating from 1973 to 2011. Materials include articles, study guides and booklets. 1 DVD and 2 CD-R are included containing interviews performed for course teaching.
Criteria Evaluation of Faculty Committee
This standing committee reviewed and developed criteria for the appointment, evaluation and progression of faculty, including the award and distribution of merit increases.
Subseries consists of minutes of meetings and some forms for the evaluation of faculty.
Subsubseries consists of reviews of and proposals for the revision of the
undergraduate curriculum at both the course and program levels.
Reporting to the Nursing Education Council, this committee was formed to encourage evaluation of the effectiveness with which nursing graduates of nursing programs meet the employers’ expectations.

Diploma Articulation Committee
The membership of the committee is comprised of representatives from nursing programs in colleges, universities and hospitals. This committee provided a forum for the exchange of information on common problems in different institutions and identified the needs and opportunities for ongoing development. It may advise the Academic Council regarding the equivalency of courses given at one institution or university as compared to courses given at another institution or university. Because of budget constraints and the similarity of the work of this committee to the Nursing Education Council, it appears to have been disbanded in about 1983.

Subseries consists of diplomas, certificates and a poem dating from 1918 to 1994. Certificates and diplomas received from various schools of nursing.
Directors of Nursing of Lower Mainland Hospitals
Beginning in 1964 Directors of Nursing from the Lower Mainland Hospitals met four times a year to discuss common concerns. Mrs. Lillies was key in the early organization. “Topics discussed at meetings included evaluation of personnel, staff orientation, role and licensing of practical nurses, education of clinical nurse specialists and principles and methods of nursing research”.
Subseries consists of one file of minutes of three meetings from 1964-1967 and other material, including a history of the organization from 1964 to 1979.
Distance and Continuing Education
Continuing education was accepted in the Health Sciences in 1968. The
Department of Continuing Medical Education had been established in the Faculty of Medicine in 1960, as the need for graduates to stay abreast of new developments was recognized.
Subseries consists of records related to the offering of nursing courses and
programs outside the regular program at UBC, often in a non-traditional manner.
Sheila Zerr writes “My fascination with dolls and nursing history began when teaching the history of nursing to first year students in 1971. At this time a display of portrait dolls illustrating the various historical periods of nursing was created. This collection has continued to grow and take form.” The changing costumes throughout the years provide insights into both the history of nursing and the changing perceptions of women in this role.
This series includes historical context for these dolls, including many photographs. Some information on the numerous displays of these dolls in a wide variety of venues is included. Sheila often collaborated with Glennis Zilm on the historical research.
The Editorial Board Committee is responsible for the production of the BCHNPPG newsletters. It was formerly called the Newsletter Committee.
Subseries consists of one folder of minutes, correspondence and other records. Subseries also includes the History of Nursing News quarterly publication from 1990-2022, and promotional materials for events organized by the BCHNS.
Subseries consists of educational projects and events records of the Community Health Nurses’ Group. Includes informational and source material, and a marketing, education and lobbying kit produced by the Group.
Education, Practice Interrelationships Committee
This standing committee identified areas and/or means for collaboration with health care agencies, other disciplines, and schools of nursing within the province.

Entry to Practice Ad Hoc Committee
This committee discussed the appropriate education and skills for nurses entering into nursing practice.

Entry to Practice Steering Committee
This committee was established to investigate the implications of introducing the requirement of a Baccalaureate degree for entry into practice.

Evaluating Child Care in the Home
The St. John Ambulance’s Child Care in the Home program was revised with the assistance of Sheila Zerr in 1979. A study, conducted by Sheila Zerr and supported by the National Health Research and Development Program Health and Welfare Canada, evaluated the effectiveness of this program in influencing the knowledge, attitudes and skills of child care.

Subsubseries consists of student evaluations of and comments on specific
graduate courses, including relevant correspondence and a 2000 report
establishing a template for evaluation of the graduate programs.
The Executive Committee reported to the RNABC. Meetings were held about once a month, with the addition of occasional special meetings. The executive consisted of four people: President, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Recording Secretary, with others often attending. In later years meetings were often held by teleconferencing.

Faculty Organization Committee
This standing committee’s aim was to review and facilitate the effectiveness of the faculty organization and committee structure, appointing faculty members to committees and make and implement recommendations approved by Faculty Caucus.
