August 1971: EC Manning Park and Hell’s Gate

All slides are stamped AUG71V1. Slides were also stamped and grouped according to one of the following additional identification numbers: 1022, 1023.

Subject matter of the images includes the Hell’s Gate area and air tram (on the Fraser River) and EC Manning Provincial Park.

July 1973: mountain scenes

All slides are stamped JUL73V2 and 1026.

Subject matter of the images includes scenes from unidentified mountains, a bear, and a house.

June 1972: Town on bay

All slides are stamped JUN72V2 and 1040.
Subject matter of the images includes a town on a coastal bay, possibly the Sunshine Coast.

November 1974: Historic marker and wildflowers

All slides are stamped NOV74V3 and 1054.
Subject matter of the images includes a historic marker for a tree that symbolized friendship between the United States and Canada, wildflowers, and a car and its odometer.

Hell’s Gate

File consists of film negatives and positives taken of the Hell’s Gate airtram and area. One of the 102×127 mm transparencies is labeled “LS-4983,” which may correspond to a number postcard printed with that image.

Kootenay Trout Hatchery

File consists of film negatives from the Kootenay Trout Hatchery. The original envelope had the following handwritten text: “35m, Kootenay, 73.”

Barkerville

File consists of images of the town of Barkerville, BC, as well as a paper sleeve that originally housed the negatives and that has identifying stamps and information similar to the stamps Dorse used in his journal, which is also included in this fonds.

Bowron Lake Chain

File consists of images of the Bowron Lake Chain in the Cariboo region of BC, with accompanying identification information about the images.

Prince Rupert

File consists of images of the Prince Rupert area and a sheet of paper with names and addresses of three women in Prince Rupert (possibly women in the images).

[Central BC 1974]

File consists of images of central BC coast and mountains, including Fraser Lake, Kitimat, the Skeena River Boats, and Tweedsmuir Park. The print is labeled 74M036.

Britannia Mine

File consists of images of the Britannia Mine, located just south of Squamish, BC.

Kitimat, 1974

File includes two prints of a photograph taken by Dorse (labelled “6551 Dorse LS-5853”) and an aerial photograph taken by Max Patzett (#5959-16). File contained duplicate images which have been removed.

Photograph consent forms and letter

File consists of papers that were contained in a folder within the original journal binder. They include six photograph consent forms, signed by individuals who were in Dorse’s photographs and giving him permission to use the images, and one letter written to Dorse regarding photographs he took for an organization.

Scenes by Dorse postcard book, British Columbia

File consists of postcards contained in a spiral bound photo album. All of the postcards were made by Dorse’s company, Scenes by Dorse, and show scenes from throughout British Columbia. The front page of the album has handwritten annotations in pencil relating to costs and quantities. Postcards have been kept in the original album.

August 1970: southern BC interior

All slides stamped AUG70V1. Slides were also stamped and grouped according to one of the following additional identification numbers: 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006, 1024.

Subject matter of these slides is from throughout the southern interior region of BC, including mountains, lakes, rivers, towns, a museum, the Cariboo region, and bridges.

September 1969: Thompson Okanagan region

All slides are stamped SEP69V1, SEP69V2, or SEP69V3. Slides were also stamped and grouped according to one of the following additional identification numbers: 1009, 1010, 1011, 1012, 1013, 1014, 1015, 1016, 1018, 1019, 1020, 1021, 1025, 1045, 1050, 1051.

Subject matter of the images seems to be mostly from the Thompson Okanagan region, though most do not have any confirming identification. Images include Kamloops and other unidentified towns; Boundary Museum; Kettle Valley Railroad; a dam; bridges; a mining museum; nature scenes; the Dewdney Trail; and a “Canadian North Pacific’s Last Spike” historical marker in the Nicola Valley.

August 1972: Northern BC

All slides are stamped AUG72V2. Slides were also stamped and grouped according to one of the following additional identification numbers: 1027, 1042.

Subject matter of the images includes Prince Rupert, a small church in a village on the water (interior, exterior, and stained glass windows), a sign for the Arctic Divide (located about 30 miles north of Prince George), another church, lake and mountain scenes, a blooming cactus, and ducks on water.

August 1969: Cariboo region and northern BC

All slides are stamped AUG69V3. Slides were also stamped and grouped according to one of the following additional identification numbers: 1031, 1032, 1034, 1035, 1046, 1052, 1056, 1057.

Subject matter of the images includes the area of Smithers, BC; a hotel; waterfall; a riverbank with wildflowers; a ferry port; the Seven Sisters mountain range; the Cariboo region; a “Paddlewheels North” historic marker sign (north of the town of Quesnel); the town of Williams Lake; wildflowers; and a woman with a baby deer.

March 1973: Vancouver

All slides are stamped MAR73V1 and 1053.
Subject matter of the images includes views of North Vancouver looking across the inlet, the Second Narrows Bridge, and Burnaby.

YM and SC 35mm negs

File consists of images of unidentified areas (except for the handwritten information on their original envelope: “YM and SC”).

Wildlife Museum

File consists of images of a wildlife museum. Three of the color transparencies are labeled with the following numbers (one number on each): LS-5328 (which likely corresponds to a postcard), 88932-C, and 88931-C.

Archival – Telkwa

File consists of photographic reproductions of images of archival images. All are labeled 71M058.

Dawson city letter and negs

File consists of images from a theatre in Dawson City, as well as two letters dated February 14, 1972. These letters were written by Dorse and are about his interest in making postcards for Dawson City as a means to increase tourism, and the possibility of getting government funding to do so. Letters provide insight into the postcard business at the time.

Vancouver

File consists of images of Vancouver. The original envelope was labeled “LS 4468,” which may correspond to a postcard.

PNE 1973

File consists of images of the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) in Vancouver in 1973.

Vancouver Island

File consists of images of Vancouver Island. The original envelope was labeled “LS-4442,” which may correspond to a postcard.

35 mm negs of 4 x 5 [inch negs]

File consists of 35 mm negative reproductions of larger (102 x 127 mm) negatives. Images include flowers, a snake, ducks, water, mountains, and buildings.

Lonesome Lake

File consists of images of Lonesome Lake and surrounding area, including Carol Lake, Junker Lake, the Talchaka Mountains, and images of swans on a mountain lake. The images were taken by J. Turner and printed by Dorse. Many of them have one of the following numbers written on them : 74M090, 74M087, 74M091, 74M088, 74M089, 74M090, 74M091, 74M092. File also includes correspondence between Dorse and J. Turner regarding these prints and postcards that Dorse had made of the region. One of these letters is printed on the back of a “Scenes by Dorse” information sheet. Another is printed on the back of a paper with a listing of Dorse’s postcards.

Hell’s Gate

File consists of photographs and one film positive of miscellaneous scense, including Hell’s Gate, mountains, skiers, railroad bridges, a grade school pageant, a waterfall, and the Victoria Trail Riders. A handwritten note was attached to the photograph of these trail riders.

Vancouver Mountains

File consists of photographs showing the North Shore Mountains as seen from Vancouver and from Surrey.

File consists of photographs and printing layout. Items are labelled “6551-Dorse LS-5859” and “6551-LS-5853.”
