Women's Activism

Series consists of records related to den Hertog's work and activism in the Women's Movement in the 1970s in Vancouver. Materials represent efforts to obtain equal rights, opportunities, access to health services, and personal freedom as part of the larger National and International efforts around women's equality. The series is divided into two sub-series: Vancouver Rape Relief and Womens' Movement (general).

Volunteer and Project Work

Series consists of records related to various volunteer positions in the areas of arms control and electoral reform, as well as material related to a book chapter written by den Hertog.
Series is divided into four sub-series: Canadian Centre for Arms Control and Disarmament, Book Chapter “Reconciling Our Origins, Facing Our Future in English Canada Speaks Out”, Royal Commission on Electoral Reform, and National Citizen’s Inquiry into Peace and Security.

Provincial NDP

Series contains material related to den Hertog’s participation in the New Democratic Party at the provincial level, including her roles as Co-Chair of Mike Harcourt’s leadership campaign (1987), the Chairperson of the B.C. NDP Convention Arrangements Committee (1982), Election Planning Committee member (1983 and 1986), Chair of B.C. Platform Committee (1983), Chairperson of the B.C. Policy Review Committee, and Vice-President/Executive member of the Provincial NDP (1981-1987).
Records include newspaper clippings, pamphlets, correspondence, conference notes, committee agendas, minutes and notes, policy questionnaires, election planning communications, drafts of speeches, and research material on various policy issues.

Federal NDP

Series contains materials related to den Hertog’s service as President of the New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP) from 1987-1989. As President of the NDP, den Hertog served as the chief spokesperson for the Executive and party to the media; chaired Officers and Executive Committees, the Council and the party’s Conventions; served as the liaison with the Leader and Caucus, and the Officers’ representative on committees such as Strategy and Election Planning, Finance, Administration and Participation of Women. den Hertog was also responsible for public speaking throughout Canada and liaison with the labour movement and representation of the party in international forums. . The series also includes materials related to the 1987 and 1989 federal NDP conventions, the B.C. Council of Federal Ridings, B.C. Federal Election Planning Committee, Task Force on Party Structure, Council of Federal Ridings and the Socialist International Congress held in Stockholm.
Records include correspondence, newspaper clippings, convention materials, speeches and articles on various women’s issues, election review materials, federal office communications, policy papers, and committee meeting agendas, minutes and notes.

Federal and Provincial Election campaigns

Series consists of materials related to den Hertog’s 1984 and 1988 campaigns to win election as a Federal Member of Parliament in the riding of Vancouver-Centre. Although defeated both times, she lost the 1988 campaign by a narrow margin. The series also contains materials related to the 1989 Provincial by-election for Vancouver-Point Grey, where she put her name forward for the NDP party nomination, but was unsuccessful. The series is divided into three sub-series: Vancouver Centre 1984, Vancouver Centre 1988 and Vancouver-Point Grey.
