Vancouver Centre 1984

Sub-series documents den Hertog’s campaign to win election as a Federal Member of Parliament in the riding of Vancouver-Centre in 1984. She was unsuccessful, losing to Progressive Conservative candidate Pat Carney.

Sub-series documents den Hertog’s campaign to win election as a Federal Member of Parliament in the riding of Vancouver-Centre in 1988. She was unsuccessful, losing by a narrow margin of 269 votes, to Progressive Conservative candidate Kim Campbell.
Records contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, election results, campaign posters, plastic campaign signs, campaign brochures, publicity photographs and other materials, drafts of den Hertog’s speeches including her nomination speech, post-election debriefing materials, NDP policy briefing documents, Vancouver Centre riding demographics, and campaign expense records.

Womens' Movement (general)

Sub-series contains materials gathered or created by den Hertog on numerous issues of relevance to second wave feminists in the 1970s, including women's health care, family law, legislative issues, labour, immigration, etc. Records also document den Hertog's activism and advocacy for women's rights, such as her participation in planning the Women Rally for Action in 1976, and feminist study groups. Her research for a piece on the history of women's political activism in BC, and other articles, speeches and writing on women's issues are included here.

Records consist of newspaper clippings, notes, ephemera, diaries, calendars, reports, correspondence, minutes and the like.

Vancouver Rape Relief

Records in the sub-series document the early history of Vancouver Rape Relief, from the initial idea conceived in 1973 to set up a support agency for rape victims, to establishing the centre in 1974, and its first years of operation. The main goals were to provide services to rape victims and to be a force for change in society, laws, and institutional procedures, and to work towards rape prevention.
Records include minutes, newsletters, reports, daybooks and desk diaries, newspaper clippings, articles, ephemera and booklets.

Canadian Centre for Arms Control and Disarmament

Sub-series contains material related to den Hertog’s service as a board member of the Canadian Centre for Arms Control, which was established in 1983 as an independent, non-partisan voice on arms control issues. The mandate of the Centre’s staff of professional analysts was to provide government policy-makers; parliamentarians, journalists and the public with policy advice on a wide range of security issues of concern to Canada.
Records include reports, issue briefs, brochures, correspondence, newspaper clippings, flyers for disarmament rallies and symposia, newsletters, board meeting agendas and notes, annual reports, Centre publications, news releases and the like.

Royal Commission on Electoral Reform

Sub-series consists of materials related to den Hertog’s service on the Royal Commission for Electoral Reform. The Commission’s mandate was to inquire into and to report on the appropriate principles and process that should govern the election of Members of the House of Commons and the financing of political parties and of candidates’ campaigns, including, but not limited to the practices, procedures and legislation in Canada; the means by which political parties should be funded; and the qualification of electors and the compiling of voters’ lists. Records consist of conference materials related to the Symposium on the Active Participation of Women in Politics as well as research for and drafts of den Hertog’s presentation to the Symposium Electoral Reform Commission entitled “Election Financing – the core of an equitable electoral system.” Also included are conference materials from the Royal Commission on Electoral Reform and Party Financing’s Research Seminar on Election and Party Financing.

Sub-series consists of records related to den Hertog’s service as a commissioner for the National Citizen’s Inquiry into Peace and Security. The inquiry, which held public hearings in communities across Canada, was established to look at alternative approaches to Canada’s peace and security requirements in the 1990s and beyond.

Book Chapter "Reconciling Our Origins, Facing Our Future in English Canada Speaks Out"

Sub-series contains background research for and drafts of den Hertog’s book chapter “Reconciling Our Origins, Facing Our Future” published in the book “English Canada Speaks Out”. The chapter addresses the constitutional debate taking place in Canada in the late 80s and early 90s from the point of view of an English-speaking Canadian. den Hertog addresses three main issues – how important the constitutional question was at the time, the lack of familiarity with the political, legal and economic “contracts” that Canada had lived under since confederation, and the lack of agreement on the purpose of constitutional change.
Records include associated correspondence and research materials – reports, newspaper clippings, etc.
