C.I.5 certificate of Wong Chung Lum

C.I.5 certificate issued in receipt of the head tax payment required for Chinese entry to Canada. Registration stamp on the back relates to Section 18 of the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act. Additional stamps relate to travel and/or other functions.

This record is in the archives of the Wongs' Benevolent Association located in Vancouver’s Chinatown; the subject was likely a member and received services there. Clan and village based societies were established throughout the diaspora to provide mutual aid among early overseas Chinese.

C.I.50 entry permit of Wong Sing Po (Wong Sing Poo) (Wong Fai Ting)

Permit issued to a Chinese person temporarily admitted to Canada under Section 9 of the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act. The permit was issued for a specified period and required extending or could be cancelled at the discretion of the Minister. Those admitted included diplomats, merchants, servants, entertainers, doctors, teachers, scholars, clergymen, students and tourists.

This item consists of a permit and annual extensions from 1932 to 1941. It is among the records of the Wongs' Benevolent Association related to its running of Mon Keang (Chinese) School 文彊學校.
