Personal and biographical

Series consists of records and published materials detailing the life and personal activities of Maurice Rush. Files in this series include an extensive newspaper clipping collection of articles about Rush as well as a transcript and videocassette of an interview with Rush entitled Maurice Rush: 55 Years in the Communist Party.

Audiocassettes

Series consists primarily of audio recordings of Rush's political speeches. Subjects covered in these speeches include the international arms race and social democracy.

Community law

This series contains records from Ian Waddell's early career in Vancouver. Files include his time as the Legal Director for the Community Legal Assistance Society (a non-profit storefront law office located in Vancouver's east side that's generally believed to be the first community law office in the province) and participation with the Legal Services Commission and Consumer Action League, which also championed community and low-income access to legal support.

Records related to Waddell's involvement with the Alcohol and Drug Commission, which worked provincially to propose policies for regulation and treatment, and the Family Law Commission (specifically, a working group looking into a unified family court) are the majority of this series.

Files for related interests are also in the series. Records include correspondence, reports, newsletters, conference proceedings, research, speeches and lectures, press clippings, legislation, notes, minutes and agendas.

Provincial politics

Series contains files related to Waddell's role as a British Columbia MLA from 1996-2001. These records include both provincial and constituent topics, as well as conferences, events, and projects that Waddell contributed to, and subject files that reflect his multiple ministerial positions in environment, intergovernmental affairs, small business, tourism, and culture. Records include correspondence, reports, press clippings, research and agendas.

As Minister of Small Business, Tourism, and Culture, Waddell was heavily involved in the bid process for the 2010 Olympics. Olympic records focus mostly on the bid process, from applying for the Canadian bid to winning the 2010 Olympic bid. Some post-bidding materials are also included, such as Waddell's personal ephemera from attending the 2010 Winter Olympics. Committee strategies and planning documents, correspondence, research and reports, meetings and agendas are among the records, as well as press releases and press clippings about the Olympic bid.

As a Member of BC Legislature, Waddell chaired the inquiry into treaty negotiations and the Nisga'a Agreement-in-Principle. These records are located in the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs series.

Waddell's international interests during this time, including following the development of the International Criminal Court, can be found in the International work series.

International work

This series includes Waddell's work on the international scene, spanning his legal and political career. Most notably, the series features the early stages of advocacy for the International Criminal Court, through Waddell's involvement in the Canadian arm of Parliamentarians for Global Action (previously known as Parliamentarians for World Order). Contents include newsletters, press, correspondence, reports, agendas and itineraries, travel information, invitations, and research. Contents cover group memberships, travel and meetings, and subject files on international subjects.

Correspondence and Personal Notes

Series consists of letters written to Cotsworth, personal notes (mostly written on envelopes and scraps of paper), drafts of printed material that may have been used in his publications, and miscellaneous articles written by other individuals. All of the records deal with calendar reform, but the personal notes reflect the wide range of Cotsworth's interest in this matter . They include notes taken on his travels to Stonehenge, Egypt, Northern British Columbia, and Alaska. The personal notes also include descriptions, even lists, of photographs taken on his trips. The articles written by other individuals deal with calendars and religious topics.

Newspaper Articles

Series consists of two folders containing newspaper clippings. The first folder contains loose clippings of articles from newspapers and journals. They deal with a diverse array of topics, most notably Stonehenge, telling or measuring time, and calendars and calendar reform. The second folder is a bound volume of newspaper clippings taken from a variety of sources covering the time period of August 4 to November 3, 1931, done by Editorial Services Ltd. on behalf of the International Fixed Calendar League. These clippings are mostly about calendar reform and the activities of the League.

Statistical Charts and Graphs

Series consists of hand drawn and machine produced statistical charts and graphs. The main areas of everyday life that Cotsworth analysed were: business, schools, production, customs and duties, hotels, post office, retail stores, and railways. He used these statistical analyses to show that there would be fewer inconsistencies in the data if the months were made up of four weeks/twenty-eight days. The series also consists of charts and diagrams/maps (of Canada) showing values for mean rainfall.

Public Consultation

Series contains records produced by the Regional District Review Committee's efforts to seek briefs from interested parties and to hold public hearings at various locations throughout the province of British Columbia. Series is divided into three files: briefs, public hearings, and correspondence.
Briefs consists of submissions by individuals, associations, and other public or private bodies, stating opinions, issues, and recommendations relating to the regional district governance model.
Public hearings contains the transcripts of public hearings held throughout the province as well as documents related to these hearings.
Correspondence consists of communications between the Committee and Districts, collections of correspondence and records regarding specific issues, and expressions of the opinions and recommendations of members of the public.

Supporting Documentation

Series contains reference materials supporting the Regional District Review Committee’s Mandate to examine the functions and roles of the Regional Districts. Files consist of maps, reports, press clippings, background materials to the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s submission to the RDRC, and a selection of acts and bills.
Maps includes three maps of restricted development areas, two in Calgary and one in Edmonton.
Reports consist of studies or other written materials on diverse topic including summaries of regional districts, annual reports, assessments of the regional district governance model, and reports of services and industries. Also includes small booklets and pamphlets.
Press clippings is a collection of photocopied newspaper and magazine articles pertinent to the Regional District Review Committee’s examination.
The Greater Vancouver Regional District’s background materials includes information related to budget, services, staff and board members, and proposal to deal with future growth and to develop a light rail transit system.
The selection of acts and bills include acts of the Province of British Columbia pertinent to the regional district system of governance, proceedings in the legislative assembly of the Province of British Columbia, environmental regulations of Alberta, and the municipality of metropolitan Toronto act.

Communications and Strategy Work

Series consists of records related to Johnson’s communications and strategy work on numerous political campaigns from the 1960s through the 1980s, including Johnson’s service on the 1985-86 B.C. NDP Election Planning Committee.
Records consist of campaign brochures, bumper stickers, buttons, name badges, photographs, agendas, minutes, policy documents, newspaper clippings, drafts of speeches, press releases, correspondence, polling data and the like.

Nepal

Series consists of records relating to Dr. Ford’s time spent working at Kunde hospital in Nepal as well as the ascent of Mount Everest. File includes letters and correspondence primarily from 1980-1992 regarding the day-to-day activities and status of Kunde hospital between Dr. Ford and her team at Kunde hospital and the administrators/stakeholders of the Trans-Himalayan Aid Society. File also includes newspapers surrounding the ascent of Mount Everest, a topic of personal interest to Dr. Ford. Records include a trekking permit, letters and correspondence, administrative reports, newspaper and magazine clippings, and photographs. See the “Medical Practice” series for all non-Nepal related medical work.

Personal Interests and Family History

Series consists of Dr. Ford’s non-medical, personal interests and family history. Records relate to her immigration to BC via the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1953, primarily being menus from the meals she ate aboard. Dr. Ford also has numerous newspaper clippings related to the accomplishments of her own family; most notably that of Marguerite Ford, her sister-in-law, who ran in Vancouver City Council political elections for Alderman and fought for the rights of disabled peoples. Records also relate to Dr. Ford’s participation as a judge in a citizenship ceremony in Surrey in 2000 as well as her reaffirmation of her own Canadian citizenship. Records relating to Dr. Ford’s interest in nature include handwritten reflections and programming for the Canadian Nature Tours in 1991. Dr. Ford’s interests also include Canadian history, including a Klondike dollar coin from 1950 as well as many newspapers surrounding the centennial of BC as a province, the new millennium in 2000, and Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

Advertising and PR Project Records

Series documents Mayrs’s career in advertising and PR.
Records in this series include mockups, print copies, and photographic reproductions of advertisements designed by Mayrs; administrative records, correspondence, ephemera, promotional materials, and newspaper and magazine profiles relating to Dome Advertising; additional correspondence between Mayrs and his PR clients; and a small number of textual records relating to Mayrs’s work at Lovick BBDO.

Personal Records

Series documents Mayrs’s personal interests as well as family history. In particular it traces his passion for running, his correspondence on behalf of his personal political views, and some of his activities from when he was growing up (i.e. his work as a paper boy).

Record types include: a genealogy, recollections of Mayrs’s family history written by the creator, press clippings that mention Mayrs, speeches and letters written by Mayrs for friends and personal milestones, photographs and ephemera that relate to his personal and aggregate professional life.

Ephemera

This series contains a wide variety of predominantly unbound, ephemeral materials produced by the press. The types of materials in the series includes business cards and promotional flyers, greeting cards and postcards, wedding and event invitations, calendars, and product packaging.

Most of the material was produced for local businesses or individuals. The series also includes some of the press’s own promotional flyers, business cards, and in-house designed cards.

Bibliographies

Series consists primarily of the handwritten or typed bibliography of Le Fanu’s works as composed by Roy Stokes. The bibliography covers Le Fanu’s works published during his lifetime and after his death. The series also includes photocopies of various book chapters and articles written by other authors that Roy Stokes used during his research process.

Sheridan Le Fanu, Joseph Thomas

Graphic Works

Series consists predominately of illustrations, comics, and cartoons by du Maurier from his time spent working at "Punch" and "Once a Week" magazines. Common themes included: Victorian society, fashion, and etiquette; social commentary on Britain’s middle class and high society; the bourgeoisie; and the tensions of “Beautymania” and the “New Woman” in the 19th century, among others. Accompanying the illustrations are handwritten texts depicting the scene with a humorous story. The subject matters in these illustrations are commonly human still life drawn in a single pane drawn in muted ink colors like black or brown. This series also includes a watercolor portrait of du Maurier and a print from the January 23, 1896 edition of "Vanity Fair" of du Maurier himself at the drawing bench illustrating for his novel "Trilby".

Writings

Series consists of personal letters written by or for du Maurier. Handwritten letters by du Maurier also occasionally have illustrations drawn on them. Several letters also have annotations written by the previous custodian of the fonds. 45 pieces of loose correspondence were donated as well as a framed collage with eleven pieces of correspondence, and a self-portrait in oil (which can be found in the “Graphic Works” series as the framed collage was de-framed during processing). File also includes one piece of a written explanation regarding an illustration that is not present in this fonds.

Education and employment records

Series contains records related to Bernard and Jean’s teaching certifications and UBC degrees, and respective careers in education, starting in positions in rural schools.

Bernard’s records relate to his first teaching positions before serving in politics. Records relate to his work as a fruit grower and accountant for his father-in-law’s fruit and vegetable packing business while engaged in politics from 1941 to 1949. Bernard’s records related to his early teaching and administrative positions at the high school level through the 1940s and 50s includes his organization of local dramatic festivals and support of amateur Indigenous productions. Many records relate to Bernard’s career advancement by 1965 into full-time educational administrator in the school districts of Vernon, Kitimat, and the South Okanagan and Keremeos. Records relate to his position in the Ministry of Education in Victoria from 1977-1979 before retiring, and his role as executive director of the Association of BC School Superintendents in retirement.

Jeans’ records relate to her first teaching positions before starting a family and political career with Bernard. Records relate to her return to teaching in part-time and contract positions, including as a teaching assistant at UBC. Records relate to her professional service with the Universities Council of B.C. and organization of university extension courses.

Records in the series reflect the development of the education system in B.C., especially rural education and the experience of one-room schools, the development of Indigenous education and curriculum, the philosophy and practice of province-wide testing, special education and the debate over mainstreaming in the 1970s, the development of alternative schools, the assessment and accreditation of schools, and the growth of the college sector. Records also reflect employment challenges faced by married women.

Record types in this series include school records and transcripts, diplomas and certificates, employment contracts, business correspondence, reports, newsletters, theatre programmes, and Indigenous education materials.

Records related to law practice and career.

Series consists of correspondence, clippings and other records related to Faminow’s legal practice and career interests, as well as a series of Supreme Court of British Columbia documents related to Faminow’s court case against the District of North Vancouver over secondary suites. Also contains a file of information on watershed issues in West and North Vancouver.

Audio recordings.

Series consists of audio recordings made by and for Faminow such as recordings at Doukhobor conferences and festivals, and recordings of Faminow’s election ads, speeches and interviews.

Membership records of Lodge No. 76

The series consists of six books of membership. These books cover the Lodge No. 76’s existence. Attendance records were generated at Lodge meetings. The membership and attendance records are arranged chronologically. The roll book and constitution contains a pre-printed set of bylaws that were used by the IOGT Lodge No. 76 to govern the Lodge’s activities.

Editorial

Series consists of manuscripts, proofs, artwork, photographs, sound cassettes, computer disks, videocassettes, calendars, broadsheets, flyers, posters, advertisements, catalogues, correspondence, author contracts, promotional material, reviews and commentary on manuscripts. The series is divided into the following sub-series: early manuscripts, general literary manuscripts, published/printed material, artwork and supplementary editorial material.

Editorial and production

Series consists of manuscripts, proofs, photographs, artwork, author contracts, and correspondence relating to books published by Arsenal Pulp Press, mainly between 2001 to 2011.

Speeches series

Series consist of speeches, drafts and notes that Rosemary gave throughout her public career. Many of the speeches were originally organized in a numeric chronological sequence, which has been maintained. Within this sequence, some numbers have multiple speeches and some speeches have multiple numbers. Speeches that had no number associated with it have been arranged chronologically and grouped by year.

Biographical Information

Series consists of Curriculum Vitae, biographical sketches, awards, certificates, a family tree, guest album, vacation information, as well as, her separation agreement from Dr. William Brown. This series contains one sub-series: day planners. See printed material for information pertaining to Rosemary’s autobiography, Being Brown (boxes 29-31).

Conferences series

Series consists of correspondence and literature pertaining to the numerous conferences that Rosemary attended and had given speeches and has been subdivided by year beginning with 1975 up to 2000. Those conferences that have numbers in the brackets pertain to the corresponding speech that Rosemary gave, which can be found in the speeches series.

Printed Material series

Series consist of articles written about Rosemary Brown and articles that Rosemary had published in the Vancouver Sun, the Globe and Mail, numerous other publications including radio spots on CKWX; as well as, publisher correspondence and agreements. The series also consists of correspondence, publicity and other material pertaining to the National Film Board documentary, “No Way! Not Me” that featured Rosemary; and in addition the script and shooting schedule for the film documentary, “Women in Politics”. This series contains two sub-series: Being Brown: Autobiography and African Canadians.

Minutes

Series contains the minutes of Board of Directors‟, Annual General and other various committee meetings. Material predominantly consists of Board of Director‟s minutes. Material is arranged chronologically.

Events & Activities

Series contains textual and graphic material related to various society events, namely the Antiquarian Book Roadshow (ABRS) and the Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada (Book Design). Material related to similar events put on by organizations/ groups other than the Alcuin Society is also included. File list is organized first generally by event and then chronologically.

Subject Files

Series consists of material that relates to subjects not covered in other series. Includes predominantly miscellaneous correspondence and the personal files of society members. Correspondence is interfiled throughout all personal papers in this sub-series. Early printed reference material has been organized alphabetically according to author/publisher.

Appointment books.

Series consists of 13 appointment books containing various entries detailing
specific appointments, predominantly those related to Mr. Barrett's political affairs. The 1985 daytimer contains some references, presumably by Mrs . Barrett, to events that occurred during trips outside of Canada .

Personal records

Series consists of information regarding Dave Barrett's personal life . There are records relating to Dave Barrett's father Samuel Barrett's long term care and death, personal financial records, newspaper clippings, and incoming and outgoing correspondence.

Federal and provincial literature

Series contains election and general literature relating to federal and provincial politics. Political parties, groups, and organizations represented include BC Unity, Canadian Action Party, Communist Party, Conservative Party, Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, Democratic Reform BC, Emancipation Party of British Columbia, Family Coalition Party of B.C., Forward B.C. Teaching and Academic Records.

Series consists of correspondence, pamphlets, poems, minutes, reports, applications, evaluations and other records pertaining to Miki's teaching and academic activities. Includes correspondence between Miki and colleagues at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and other academic institutions, as well as correspondence relating to Miki’s research activities and his involvement and communication with various interest groups and associations. Series also includes projects, papers, correspondence and evaluations relating to courses taught by Miki at SFU, publications by writers who Miki arranged to have visit SFU, and reports, correspondence, and applications pertaining to Government grant and work study funding of projects proposed by or supported by Miki. Series also includes minutes and related correspondence and reports of a committee to establish a Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at SFU.

Literary and Cultural Events and Conferences Participation Records.

Series consists of correspondence, programmes, papers, and press clippings relating to Miki’s organization of and participation in literary and cultural conferences, panels, talks, and other events, locally, nationally and internationally. Cultural events concern racism, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and the Japanese Canadian experience.

Dolls and Costumes

Series consists of records dating from 1985 to 2011. Series is arranged into two subseries: Dolls and Costumes. Materials related to Sheila Zerr's interests in both dolls and costumes relating to nursing history. Booklets, photographs and information related to numerous displays and presentations prepared by Zerr are in the Dolls subseries. Other materials include photographs and booklets of costumes for adults often modelled by Sheila Zerr and others at nursing events, and mounted as exhibits.

South Vancouver Island history

Records consist of a compiled history of Southern Vancouver Island, for which Burch is referenced as providing “personal interviews,” and articles relating to the same subject. Series is divided into two files: Manuscript and Articles.
