Subseries documents events held by YWCA Metro Vancouver for current members, former members, and the broader Vancouver community. Events held by the YWCA include: anniversaries, reunions, and grand openings celebrating the YWCA, its services, and its membership; and awards and competitions during which the YWCA directly engages with the broader community. Activities represented include planning, marketing, and documenting events.

Records consist of programs, flyers, photographs, videocassettes, and other material arising from the planning, promotion, and actual event.

Providing physical fitness services alongside other wellness activities was an early function of YWCA Metro Vancouver. The organization introduced physical training classes between 1912 and 1914 and expanded its offerings after the opening of a new gymnasium in 1924. Fitness programming first encompassed classes such as marching, calisthenics, aesthetic and folk dancing, as well as athletic sports such as basketball and grass hockey. These physical fitness courses were offered alongside adult education classes including English literature, Bible study, French, dress-making, and shorthand. Over the following decades, the YWCA further developed its fitness courses, programs, and clubs alongside its adult education offerings at its central program building, Pender Y, various branch Y’s, and off-premises with Y clubs and at city-wide events. In 1957, a pool was added to YWCA facilities and swimming courses and programs were introduced. In the 1960s, the YWCA responded to an increase in Vancouver community centres and public facilities by moving towards courses focused on “social development” and “development of the individual.” 1964 saw the introduction of classes such as “Yoga-Psycho-Therapy,” “Judo: the Art of Self Defense,” and yoga camps. During the 1970s, the YWCA focused on fitness for special interest groups with its post mastectomy, prenatal, and osteoporosis programs. In 1994, YWCA Metro Vancouver opened its Health + Fitness Centre in its Hornby building. Programs center around its facilities including a pool, gymnasium with machines and weights, two studios for various classes, and pickleball court.

Material in this subseries arises from YWCA Metro Vancouver’s fitness programs and adult education classes, management of fitness facilities, and operation of services associated with YWCA fitness centres.

The General files subseries contains promotional and marketing materials for Harbour Publishing as a company, such as seasonal marketing plans, as well as files that contain records for multiple authors and publications, such as awards applications. Some notebooks and planners from former managing editor Mary Schendlinger are also included.

The photographs contained in this subseries are images featured in the <i>Second</i> publication.

Subseries contains textual records related to Marusya Bociurkiw's work of poetry titled <i>Halfway to the East</i>. These records include drafts of the work, as well as copies of correspondence and the contract between Bociurkiw and Lazara Press. Other records include other copies of correspondence related to the work, reviews and promotions of <i>Halfway</i> and other poems by Bociurkiw, and records related to the production of the work. The subseries also contains a copy of Bociurkiw's poem "Radio Nights," both in English and in German.

Subseries contains textual records pertaining to Leslie Hall's poetry broadside titled <i>35 Stones</i>. The records include drafts and layouts of the broadside, as well as copies of the published edition. Other records include correspondence, order forms, and invoices.

Subseries contains textual records pertaining to Linda Hall Pinder's "The Carriers of No: After the Land Claims Trial" publication in Lazara Press' Discussion Series. The subseries contains drafts of the publication, as well as the final copy. Other records include correspondence, cataloguing information, and book catalogues.

Biographical sketch
Alexander Theodore “Sandy” Brent (1912-1990) was as lifelong resident of the South Okanagan. After the death of his mother in the influenza epidemic of 1918, he and his siblings (Frederick (Eddie), Mary, Alice, Margaret and Donald) were raised by his grandparents at the Shingle Creek Ranch. Brent married Harriet Morgan and together they raised two sons (Kenneth (b. 1942) and George (b. 1945). His sister Alice married Hal Tweddle; she and her family is photographically documented in the Richter and Tweddle families collection.
The Brent’s lived variously in Allen Grove, St. Andrews by the Lake, and Penticton. Sandy Brent worked in ranching, hard rock mining (Nickel Plate mine above Hedley), logging, and finally as a foreman and later superintendent for the Hatfield family’s Interior Contracting Company.

Scope and content
Subseries consists of recorded interviews and transcripts of recorded interviews. Not all audio recordings associated with transcripts are extant; likewise, not all audio tapes have an associated transcript. Content of interviews includes personal reminiscences, descriptions of photographs, and family histories. Subseries also includes a suite of interviews with his sisters, Alice, and Margaret.

The subseries consists of commissioned commercial photography (portraits, candids, aerials) carried out primarily by three firms (Aero Surveys Ltd., ca. 1948 to 1958; Jennings Ltd. Photography, ca. 1971 to 1974; and Hans Giesen of British Columbia Ltd. ca.1973). None of these firms have a current detectable presence. Other commercial photographers include Jack Cash Photographic Studio, Pope's Studio, Paul Ponich, Kermode Studio, and Ribelin Photography. Of these, only Pope's Studio is clearly still extant. Other photographs originate from the mill(s) proper, and yet others have been collected from third parties' personal photo collections (acquired or copcopied) by Sharron J. Simpson. There are a total of approximately 2,350 images in the form of photographs, scans & photocopies on paper, slide transparencies, negatives, and contact prints documenting mill business (under various nomenclature and ownership) during the years ca. 1910 to 1994, in colour and black & white, with sizes ranging from oversize posters to 10x12cm prints.

Subseries consists of partial documentation of the substantial forestry, logging, and sawmill operations conducted by Crown Zellerbach Canada (Southern Interior Wood Products) during the 1960s through 1980s. Predominantly, this subseries is comprised of prepared reports, prospectuses, industrial profiles, and descriptions of assets, work processes, and mill specifications.

Series documents Sharron J. Simpson’s activism as the leader of a legal initiative challenging the proposed dissolution of the Simpson Covenant, a restrictive land sale agreement made between her grandfather, Stanley M. Simpson and the City of Kelowna in 1946.
To explain the context of the creation of the covenant: following a mill fire on S.M.S. Ltd. land on what is now Kelowna’s downtown waterfront (around the area known as Manhattan Point) S.M. Simpson sold this land to the City of Kelowna with the understanding that S.M. would sell at a reduced rate, and the City of Kelowna would agree that the land be used for civic or community (not commercial) purposes. In the 2000s, the City of Kelowna moved to dissolve the so-called “Simpson Covenant,” and in response Sharron J. Simpson launched a court challenge to enforce the maintenance of the covenant.
Series contains correspondence, legal documents (including petitions, reasons for judgment, affidavits, civic records and land title office records, City of Kelowna memoranda, press clippings and press releases, appraisal records, etc.).

Subseries consists of genealogical records of the Sumarlidason family, recordings of Sumarlidason’s recollections in 1990 and 1991, as well as a biography of Sumarlidason. The subseries also includes a copy of the Icelandic Canadian, Winter 1979, in which Sumarlidason wrote an article about her mother, an essay about Iceland written by M.C.
