Personal photographs

This grouping of photographs is composed of the personal photographs of Douglas which are not found in albums. Most of the pictures were taken by Douglas ; some by parents or friends . The organization is roughly chronological, with some subject groupings, and follows the original ordering of the pictures. Duplicates have been removed. The photos are still for the most part in the original envelopes in which Douglas kept them ; quotation marks indicate Douglas' notation. Some envelopes contain both prints and negatives. All are black and white prints unless otherwise noted.

Papers and documents concerning the "modus vivendi" sealing claims…

Subseries consists of drafts of letters and documents, notes, and supporting material, as well as final declarations, petitions, and memorials regarding sealing claims. Draft documents include petitions and memorials to various Canadian and British government officials and representatives. The draft letters are addressed to many of the same Canadian government officials, representatives, and others found in the Correspondence series. Supporting material includes incoming correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other related documents. There is no discernible order to the material.

Archibald Murchie collection

Landscapes showing developing infrastructure in the interior of British Columbia in the later 19th and early 20th century, with especially robust coverage of the construction of railroads and bridges, as well as some mining operations. Features group portraits of work crews.

Wilkinson, Kenneth

3 sketchbooks containing pencil drawings by Kenneth Wilkinson depicting his travels and various landscape scenes.

Madeline Harrower Collection

Records of and relating to Madeline Harrower (1867-1891), who served as a nursing sister during the Boer War and World War I, were retrieved by a dumpster diver in Kerrisdale, Vancouver in 2000. Many of these were later sold at auction. Lois Blais subsequently engaged in a research review of this collection. Harrower was born in Australia and moved to Vancouver in the late 1940s.

Subseries consists of material related to Blais’ unfinished research into the historical significance of Madeline Harrower.

Western Canada Tour Scrapbook

This scrapbook was initially included with the A.M. Pound papers. It was felt that since the scrapbook was about A.M. Stephen (compiled by him, and after his death, by his wife, Irene Stephen) it should be included with the Stephen papers. The scrapbook covers the time from 1928, when Stephen made his much publicized tours of Western Canada, to 1963, when Stephen's last edition of poems (compiled by his wife) was published. The scrapbook includes newspaper articles, book reviews, letters (mainly to Mrs. Stephen), and other assorted memorabilia. (Note written by Robert Gore.)

YWCA Metro Vancouver history

Subseries documents YWCA Metro Vancouver’s research on its own history, typically for the purpose of producing historical summaries of the organization, staff, facilities, programs, and/or membership in the service of communications and promotion. Activities represented include: compilation of original and copied material; correspondence with former staff and members involving commentary on YWCA history and attached original materials; research and note-taking on the YWCA’s history; and communication of YWCA history via presentations, publications, and promotional pieces.

Records consist of collected original and photocopied material, material sent in by former members and staff, notes, written summaries, presentations, and other material used to produce, comment on, and communicate the history of the organization.

Guðrun Johnson collection

The subseries consists largely of photographs of the Johnson family and friends, and also includes correspondence, Johnson’s biography, her postcard collection, textile projects as well as her husband Fred’s Certificate of Discharge from the Active Militia of Canada. Notably, the subseries contains a braid of Johnson’s hair.

Sub-series consists of correspondence and related minutes and other documents of the British Columbia Canners' Association, Fraser River Canners' Association and the Rivers Inlet Canners.

Several items in subseries are not photographs, items were assigned photograph numbers previously. Arrangement has been retained upon transfer to RBSC for consistency.

Valentine Carmichael Haynes collection

Biographical sketch
Valentine Carmichael Haynes (21 December, 1875 – 1963?) was the first of many white settlers to be born in Osoyoos. He worked as a rancher all his life and was highly skilled in this area. Haynes married Elizabeth Runnels (d. 1942), niece of Nespelem George, a Chief with described kinship to the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Runnels was an artist and an interpreter. One daughter, Alice, married a Thompson.

Scope and content
Subseries consists of documentation of Valentine Haynes and his family, as well as the Okanagan Cattle Company, of which Haynes was founder, all in the approximate area of Osoyoos, BC. Photographs depict ranching scenes, landscapes, and family life; textual materials include banking records, biographical sketches, Okanagan Cattle Company records, and genealogical information.

Publishers, Agents & Representatives

This sub-series includes correspondence from book publishers, solicitors, literary agents, and author’s representatives. These groups are both Canadian and American based.

Annual general meeting minutes.

Sub-series contains records relating to the British Columbia Lumber Manufacturers Association’s Annual General Meetings. Material consists of meeting minutes which include the history of the association, list of committees including the lumber, shingle, Sash and Door branches; legislation, railway rates, labour, logs and press committee, minutes of shareholders meeting for the organization, elections of offices and Board of Directors, amendments to acts such as the Bush Fires Act, discussion of arbitration for disputes in the industry, reports on new grading rule, shareholder certificate books which provides the number of shares owned by an individual, and information about the individual’s profession, location and company as shareholder.
Series also includes pictures of prominent members of lumber associations including J.A. Humbird, Gordon Gibson, A.D. Anderson, L.L.G. Bentley, L.R. Andrews, Tom Wilkinson, J.M. Edwards, W.J. van Dusen, Tom Burgess, H.V. Simpsons and Bill McMahon.

Speeches and Writings by Doyle

Sub-series consists of speeches and other writings by Doyle concerning the history of the Pacific Coast salmon industry, British Columbia fishing industry licensing, legislation and regulation, the conservation of fish populations, salmon canning, and canning industry management. Includes also a summary of the ownership of some British Columbia canneries and processing plants, including Namu, Mill Bay, and Kimsquit, 1914-1930. Title based on contents of sub-series.

Lillian Sumarlidason collection

Subseries consists of genealogical records of the Sumarlidason family, recordings of Sumarlidason’s recollections in 1990 and 1991, as well as a biography of Sumarlidason. The subseries also includes a copy of the Icelandic Canadian, Winter 1979, in which Sumarlidason wrote an article about her mother, an essay about Iceland written by M.C. Christian, and the Sumarlidason family scrapbook. The scrapbook contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, discharge papers, and ephemera.

Miscellaneous Correspondence

Sub-series consists of miscellaneous incoming and outgoing correspondence, mainly of a business nature. Includes a few letters related to Doyle's position as General Manager of the British Columbia Packers Association. Title based on contents of sub-series.

Incoming Correspondence

Sub-series consists of correspondence received by Doyle, including letters of a business nature, letters related to his involvement with various fisheries associations and organizations, and correspondence pertaining to his concerns regarding hydroelectric dams. Title based on contents of sub-series.

Incorporation Records and Directors' Reports

Sub-series consists of early records ofthe British Columbia Packers' Association, including a proposal to create the Association written by Henry Doyle in February, 1922, as well as the Association's Certificate of Incorporation, and Directors' reports for 1904 to 1907.

Dora Hatton collection

The subseries contains the original finding aid and collection information made by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia for the Dora Hatton collection. The subseries also contains a manuscript written by Hatton’s father, Halldor Eriksson about his life and participation in different Icelandic communities in Canada. Additionally, the subseries contains a large series of family photographs and a scrapbook of the Eriksson and Hatton families.

Sub-series consists of statistics and reports collected by the B.C. Canners Association from various canneries and fishing centres.

Sub-series consists of minutes, resolutions, and agreements of the British Columbia Canners' Association, Fraser River Canners' Association, Rivers Inlet Canners, and other related associations .

Financial records.

Sub-series consists of financial records of Fraser River Saw Mills, Limited and
Fraser River Lumber Company, Limited. Includes financial ledgers and accounts,
payroll and other records pertaining to employee wages, as well as records
concerning company purchases and sales.

Family Finances

Subseries consists of records related to the Manson family's personal finances. These records date from as early as Manson's university days and continue past his death with records produced by other members of the Manson family.

These records include bank statements, receipts, insurance policies, mortgages, tax returns, household valuations, stocks purchased for family members, account books, and ledgers.

Lumber Mills Branch meetings.

Sub-series contains meeting minutes relating to the Lumber Mills Branch meetings, a division of the British Columbia Lumber Manufacturers Association. Materials consists of minute books which document the meetings proceedings including issues such as lumber exports to the United States, market surveys, transportation rates, and reports from various sub-committees.

Photographs.

Sub-series consists of photographs and negatives pertaining to Pacific Mills
Limited’s operations in Ocean Falls, B.C., and the construction and operation of
the previous mill. Sub-series also includes many photographs relating to the
development of Ocean Falls, B.C. as a community.

S.M. Simpson Ltd. Financial Files

Subseries consists of remaining financial records describing the debits and credits of S.M. Simpson prior to the founding of S.M. Simpson Ltd, as well as those generated as a natural by-product of operations of the enterprise, S.M. Simpson Ltd.
Contents of series include banking records, invoices, company financial reports, and payroll & remittances to Workman’s Compensation (currently known as WorkSafe BC).

Subseries consists of records related to Manson's social life. Materials related to events that Manson was invited to are particularly prominent in this subseries, such as luncheons with King George VI and the Queen Mother and later with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.

These records include travel itineraries and travel receipts, Christmas cards, thank you cards, anniversary cards, calling cards, invitations, and seating charts.
