Scrapbooks

Series consists of three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings of articles concerning Nicol, reviews of his work, and his columns.

Series consists of posters, newspaper clippings, family genealogical records, various awards including the UBC Alumni Award and the Order of Canada, as well as records related to various court cases Nicol was involved in. For other relevant records from previous accruals see earlier finding aids.

Manuscripts

Series consists of draft copies, annotated copies with editorial marks, proof copies, of various published and unpublished manuscripts for books including, but not limited to the following: The Book of Naughty Birds, Shaggy Doggerel, Canadian Politics Unplugged, Old Is In: A Guide for Aging Boomers, Doughnut Danny and the flying Sorcerer, The Write Stuff, Driver follow that Dream, Felix the Brat, Back Talk: A Book for Bad Back Sufferers and Those Who Love (Put Up With) Them, The Casanova Sexicon, A Consumers Guide to Men, and Your Turn of the Century.
The series also includes manuscripts for the following screen plays: Ma: A Celebration of Margaret Murry (includes both copies for television and stage), Bringing up Grandpa and Bear with Me as well as draft and final copies of newspaper articles.

Financial records

Series consists of writers contracts and licences between Nicol and various publication houses and media groups including, but not limited to the following: the Canadian Broadcasting; Doubleday Canada Limited; Harper and Brothers; Holt, Rinehart and Winston of Canada Limited; Hurting Publishing; MacMillian Company of Canada; and Simon and Pierre Publishing Company.

The series also consists of royalty statements, correspondence between Nicol and various publishing houses, records related to Nicol’s involvement with the Public Lending Right (PLR) Commission of Canada, and other financial records regarding the publication of Nicol’s books.

Records related to law practice and career.

Series consists of correspondence, clippings and other records related to Faminow’s legal practice and career interests, as well as a series of Supreme Court of British Columbia documents related to Faminow’s court case against the District of North Vancouver over secondary suites. Also contains a file of information on watershed issues in West and North Vancouver.

Family records.

Series consists of Faminow family records, related to schooling, the family farm and other personal records. Contains a file of letters related to military mobilization during the Second World War and the Faminow sons’ attempts to gain exemptions. Series consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, certificates, a farm account book and other textual records and are arranged by type of record. Also contains a file of obituaries and memorials of Peter Faminow compiled by Polly Faminow.

Records related to education.

Series consists of records related to Faminow’s university education and law articling. Records include correspondence, essays (some written by people other than Faminow) and short stories and poems, some of which reference the Doukhobors. Also includes certificates from Willamette University, Law Society of British Columbia, Law Society of Alberta, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, University of Saskatchewan and the Province of Alberta. Files are arranged by type of record.

Audio recordings.

Series consists of audio recordings made by and for Faminow such as recordings at Doukhobor conferences and festivals, and recordings of Faminow’s election ads, speeches and interviews.

Doukhobor related files.

Series consists of Faminow’s files and documents related to the history of the Doukhobors and his own involvement in the Doukhobor community and related issues such as pacifism, multiculturalism and human rights. Series contains correspondence with others in the Doukhobor community such as Koozma Tarasoff and Eli Popoff, writings about the Doukhobors by Faminow and others, and records generated by societies and conferences such as the Sons of Freedom, Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, 1958 Peace Through Non-violence Conference and various other Doukhobor organizations. Several files consist of documents related to Faminow’s fact-finding activities into the Doukhobor children who were removed from their families to the New Denver residential school (known as “Operation Snatch”) in the 1950’s. Two files contain historical documents have originated from and/or were circulated within the Doukhohor community in the 1920’s – 1950’s, such as circulars distributed by Peter P. Verigin (file 3-7).

Scrapbooks and clippings

Series consists of loose and scrapbooked newspaper clippings regarding Faminow’s political career, local and provincial politics, family, and Doukhobor related events. One scrapbook contains a series of photographs of Doukhobor children at New Denver School; one scrapbook contains a series of photographs from a Doukhobor gathering.

Advertisements and literature.

Series consists of clipped advertisements for red cedar shingles and shakes, as well as pamphlets and other literature distributed by the Bureau. Most of the files of advertisements were either sent from Seattle to Vancouver and compiled into files in Vancouver, or compiled by the Vancouver office, as indicated by the file titles. Series also contains a file of photographs showing various uses of red cedar shingles on homes and other structures.

Administrative files.

Series consists of textual records related to the incorporation and running of the Red Cedar Shingle Bureau, especially the B.C. division. Records also contain information related to industry standards and statistics gathered and compiled by the Bureau. Series is arranged into files according to the original order as kept by the B.C. offices of the Red Cedar Shingle Bureau.

Musical theatre files.

Series consists of documents pertaining to musicals that John Emerson participated in. Files include musical scores, scripts, programs, short stories, letters and other materials related to the production of musicals.

Radio program scripts and notes.

Series consists of scripts and notes for radio programs hosted by John Emerson, arranged by program title where given. Series also includes unfinished or incomplete scripts, scripts for half-hour radio plays, script gags, and notes pertaining to broadcast suggestions.

Newspaper clippings.

Series consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, many of which pertain to John Emerson, his productions, or acquaintances. The series also contains two theatre programmes.

Non-textual materials.

Series consists of one black and white photograph of a group in the Vancouver Mayor’s office, inscribed to Emerson, and two audio discs recordings of “Vancouver” by Tommy Ryan.

Journals

Journals reflect Allen’s day-to-day and family life in England, summer vacations with her family to Trebarfoot, a painting trip to Italy, examples of her playwriting, and documents several years of her life in Canada, from 1930 to 1934. Within the journals are family photographs, drawings and sketches, many by Allen, others contributed by various family members. The journals are as follows: Trebarfoot Vol. 1 (1890 to 1894); Trebarfoot Vol. 2 (1895 to 1898); Trebarfoot Vol. 4 (1901 to 1904); Daily diary (1898); Daily diary (1900, 1903, 1911); Italy journal (1904); Little Female Academy (no date); Auntie McAssar (no date); 1930’s diary (1930-1934).

Artwork

The artwork in this collection was created by Allen Biller during her earlier years in England as well as during her time in Canada. Her earlier works, particularly those completed before immigrating to Canada, were often illustrative commercial works, intended for publication in books or periodicals, as well as for other commercial purposes such as Christmas cards and book plates. Her later works include more landscapes. The Artwork series is divided into 5 files: Original drawings, Published works, Significant unpublished works, Landscapes, and Other artwork.

Series B: Other Activity 1926-1944

Series consists material related to other left-wing and labour activity in Evans’ life, including the Princeton mine workers strike, his work in support of the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War and the Canadian Labour Defence League and the Communist Party of Canada.

Correspondence.

Files include letters sent to Frank Charnley from Viola, Annie and Lane Vlag, Nora Reardon-Parker, Evelyn Fleischman, Frances Christopherson, and copies of letters written by Charnley to various organizations regarding his scientific research and writing, to his daughter Frances, and to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Series is arranged primarily in alphabetical order by sender. Correspondence files also contain greeting cards and general correspondence from other family, friends, and organizations. Intermingled within a file of Father’s Day cards is a small notebook containing mathematical calculations.

Mathematical notes

Series consists of mathematical calculations and project notes as well as several unpublished articles in draft form. Topics featured within this series include quantum mechanics and binomial distribution.

Creative writing.

Series consists of unpublished manuscripts written by Frank Charnley including typescripts of three short stories, “St. Gamand Ridge”, “Clouds Over Zeda”, “The Magazines Reader Murder” and three poems, “The Immigrants”, “Confederation Blues” and “Poisson’s Law."

Sheep ranching records.

Series consists of a daily log of Frank Charnley’s sheep ranching activities on Barnston Island, November 20, 1970 – August 6, 1971. The log book also includes mathematical calculations.

Miscellaneous records.

Series consists of miscellany collected by Frank Charnley including various brochures, publisher lists, constitution and by-laws of the Surrey Co-Operative Association, a bumper sticker, vehicle insurance records, scientific reports, and other miscellaneous items.

University records.

Series consists of examinations and an essay (“The manufacture of sulphuric acid in the chamber process”) written by Frank Charnley while attending University of British Columbia.

Photographs.

Series consists of photographs taken of Frank Charnley, Beth Charnley, his daughter Frances, and an unidentified man at the Barnston Island home

Reports authored by Frank Charnley.

Consists of published reports authored by Frank Charnley on the subjects of fisheries, mathematics, and progress reports of the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo and the Pacific Fisheries Experimental Station in Prince Rupert. Several reports are published by the National Research Council of Canada.

Administration.

Series contains administrative records relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of N.R. Dustings business files regarding the association’s activities and functions, and blueprints of the Canadian Indemnity Building located at 1477 Pender St, Vancouver, offices for the Council of Forest Industries, Plywood Manufacturers Association, British Columbia Loggers Association, Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau, British Columbia Lumber Manufacturers Association and the Consolidate Red Cedar Shingle Association.

Agreements.

Series consists of the Softwood Lumber Agreement and a signed final copy of the Cooperative Overseas Market Development Project and Western Canada Agreement and a copy of the British Columbia Jobs and Timber Accord.

Audio-visual materials.

Series contains audio-visual material relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of audio reels, video cassettes, film reels, and cassette tapes that document different types of trees, health and safety procedures during forestry operations, and promotional material regarding forestry and lumber.

Briefs.

Series contains briefs relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of a briefing on the reorganization of COFI, brief concerning the Future History Project, and a debriefing concerning a meeting entitled “Canada’s Forest Philosophy.”

Circulars.

Series contains circulars relating to the Red Cedar Shingle & Shake Division of the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of circulars with budgetary information for the different divisions of the organization, log stocks at the Vancouver market, and news on the transportation in the forestry industry.

Committees and associations

Series contains records from the Council of Forest Industries committees. Materials include minutes, agendas, reports, and recommendations made by various committees including the Transition committee, the Steering Committee, CHIP Export Advisory committee, Canada’s Forest Philosophy Roundtable and the Shingle and Shake Promotion Committee and alternates.

Governance.

Series contains records relating to the reorganization and governance of the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of organization’s mission and mandate, strategic plan, goals and activities, organizational plans, descriptions about COFI positions and departments, questions about the future direction of the organization, staff development seminar documents, documents concerning issues faced by COFI during the 1990s, and the documents regarding the reorganization of the organization. Materials also include COFI’s reorganization of its Shingle and Shake division.

Conferences.

Series contains conference and convention documents relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of a submission to the British Columbia Round Table on the Economy and Environment from COFI and notes from a conference call regarding Meech Lake.

Correspondence and memorandum.

Series contains memoranda and correspondence relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of correspondence with the Honourable Jean-Luc Pepin, correspondence concerning the cost of promoting forestry overseas, memos concerning the United States legislative process, correspondence of the Cooperative Overseas Promotion, correspondence and memoranda regarding the Future History Project and correspondence regarding Canadian lumber dispute, correspondence regarding Mike Aspey’s participation at Meech Lake, correspondence and memos with the Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau, correspondence regarding the proper packaging and labelling of shingle and shakes, correspondence and examples of shingle company shipping labels, memos and correspondence with Arnold Porter and COFI regarding the Shingle and Shakes inquiry, correspondence concerning overseas market development and missions with foreign countries, and N.R. Dustings personal correspondences.
Photographs are of different structures located in areas of Pago Pago including The Tusitala Hotel in Western Samoa, a new hotel under construction in Pago Pago, the Painnaber Hotel, a church, and the Convention Centre.
Series also holds 20 35 mm slides on the Destination of BC Forest Products.

Legal documents.

Series contains records relating to legal proceedings and questions relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of judgements from the Supreme Court of British Columbia and a detailed description of reasons for the judgements and mini trail reports concerning trials of lumber related companies and an inquiry report regarding scaling at Shoal Island Log sort.

Minutes.

Series consists of meeting minutes of the Council of Forest Industries committees. Material consists of ledger books with meeting minutes pasted inside, type and handwritten minutes.
Minutes are divided into the follow sub-series: Ad Hoc Meeting on Packaging and Labelling Act, Annual General Meeting minutes, Board of Director Meeting minutes, Canadian Forest Industries Council Board of Directors minutes, Canadian Forest Industries Council minutes, Canadian Wood Council, Lumber Promotion Committee minutes, Management Meeting minutes, Nomination Committee, Overseas Market Program Committee, Shingle and Shake Liaison Committee, Shingle/Shake Promotions Committee Meeting minutes, and Working Group of Ad Hoc Committee on U.S. Market Meetings minutes.

International Trade Commission.

Series contains records relating to the International Trade Commissions and the Council of Forest Industries involvement in the commission. Material consists of memos and correspondence regarding the Commission, statements made by the Senate Finance Committee, a petition to the International Trade Commission and the United States Department of Commerce regard Softwood Lumber, Shakes and Shingles, and Fence, Shingle and Shake pre, post, and hearing documents as well as the injury decision report, notes from P. Gilbert on the Shingle and Shake inquiry, and a collection of proceedings of the Commission.

Project files.

Series consists of project files related including material related to shingle and shake promotion project the Brügman BAU Exhibition in Germany. Records include correspondence, pamphlets, and brochures on shingles and shakes in Germany.
Photographs are of the Brügman exhibition stand at fair BAU in Munich. The exhibition stand is roughly 400 square meters. The fairs dominant feature was its Shingle and Shakes. Another photograph is of Mr. Ravens –British Columbia’s housing minister –standing before a totem pole.

Reports.

Series contains reports relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Material consists of reports by the COFI president regarding different forestry related topics, a report entitled “Impact of Government on Industry Competitiveness, reports on forestry resources in B.C, a report on sustainable development and B.C. pulp and paper industry, and a document on Native land claims and their relationship with forestry, reports on the overseas markets and the forestry industry, a review on the Northern Interior Lumber sector, information and proceedings concerning the Forest Forever Campaign for Wood, reports to members and divisions of COFI, a short history of Cedar, reports on the shingle and shake program and its promotion overseas, and a CFS Technical Report.

Newsletters.

Series contains newsletters relating to the Council of Forest Industries Shingle and Shake Division. Material consists of newsletters that are concerned with education and training information, committee updates and reports, residential housing construction figures, notes on publicity, and average prices of different wood related constructions in the Vancouver and Victoria area.

News releases.

Series contains news release relating to the Council of Forest Industries Shingle and Shake Division. Material consists of a news release aimed at the European forest industry, more specifically to the United Kingdom and news releases from the Canadian Forest Industries Council regarding the International Trade Administration and their ruling on Canadian lumber products, a communiqué regarding the Wood Products Export Agreement extension, a news release advertising the name change of the Northern B.C. Lumber Association to the Northern Forest Products Association (NFPA) as a result of COFI’s reorganization, a media release concerning an announcement being made regarding B.C. forestry and tourism sector.

Photographs.

Series contains photographs and slides relating to the Council of Forest Industries. Photographs depict uses of shingle and shakes and various members of COFI, past presidents and members of forest and lumber associations in British Columbia.
The series is subdivided into two sub-series: Shingle and Shake Examples and Council of Forest Industries Members and Presidents.
