Manuscripts series

Series consists of drafts and outlines of manuscripts, certificates, diplomas, curriculum vitae, addresses, published articles, correspondence, handwritten and typed excerpts, interviews, and notes pertaining to various manuscripts written by Johns. Series contains three subseries: Autobiography, Personal Papers, Articles and Speeches, and History of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing subseries.

Records related to literary activities

Series includes materials related to Howard’s book <i>Vancouver Svenskar: A History of the Swedish Community in Vancouver</i> and research on Swedes in Canada and in B.C., to Irene Howard’s activities as editor and literary agent for Ronald Liversedge and his unpublished memoir <i>Memoirs of the Spanish Civil War,</i> to her involvement in the Writer’s Union of Canada. The material included in the series also pertains to Howard’s research and articles on the Branvolds of Diamond Head, Helen Gutteridge, Ethel Wilson and on “high society” in Vancouver’s West End at the turn of the century with transcripts of taped interviews with Joseph Malkin, Lila Molson, Elspeth Cherniavsky, Mrs. A. W. Bell-Irving, H.R. Clyne and Gardner S. Eldridge. There is also correspondence from Arne Johnson regarding lumber unions, a Swedish pamphlet on the Industrial Workers of the World, and two black and white publicity photos of Irene Howard in this series.

Subject file

Series is largely composed of correspondence files regarding publication of W.H. White's books, especially publication of subsequent editions with various publishers. Some files in the series relate to controversies with which W.H. White was involved.

Artifacts series

Series consists of artifacts from St. John’s University in Taiwan, world reunions of the Johanneans, and St. John’s University Alumni Associations, including badges for the world reunions and souvenir caps, cups, T-shirts, ring, crystal artworks, magnifiers, key chain watch, paper weight and gift flag. Box 6 contains hard artifacts (e.g. non-fabric materials), while box 7 contains soft artifacts (e.g. fabric materials).

Photos of places, streets, and architecture in British Columbia

This series of historical photographs focuses on the structures and places of British Columbia, notably building exteriors and interiors, and street views. Locations include Victoria, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland area, Sunshine Coast, Nanaimo, Chilliwack, Sicamous, Vernon and Prince George. Images feature exteriors of business buildings and structures (such as sawmills) in the 1920s, interiors of retail shops and work spaces circa 1910 to 1940, interiors of domestic settings, and many maritime scenes. Highlights identified by the collector include the crowds listening to the Duke of Connaught at the Vancouver Court House in 1912, aerial views of Vancouver from the 1930s to 1950s, and "lost buildings".

Reprints series

Series consists of a set of published off-prints relating to a variety of medical topics that Frank Wesbrook collected or, in some cases, wrote.

Formerly maintained in the Memorial Room of the Woodward Library, part of the collection was transferred to the University Archives in November 2013 and again in 2014 and added to the Frank Wesbrook fonds.

Correspondence - Native Peoples’ issues

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence including minutes of meetings of the Port Simpson people regarding land issues and their relationship with the Hudson's Bay Company, Kincolith Indians, surveyors, Indian agents, and the federal government, 1876-1887.

Axis Power - World War II series

Series consists of clippings, publications, cartoons, and a scrapbook collected by MacKay about the Axis powers during World War II. Series also includes an unidentified diary (1882) found by MacKay in 1931 in an abandoned building in Iceberg Bay, B.C

Research

Series includes research conducted by Rachel Epstein and for her by others. Research materials include: articles, book chapters, and research reports (written by students). Articles are frequently from the Labour Gazette about domestic and farm workers, including reports on working conditions and worker testimonials. Book chapters are mostly written by Studs Terkel. One file contains pay stubs and time sheets for workers of a company called Comcare.

Royal Society of Canada

Series consists of pamphlets, correspondence, calendars, newsletters, minutes, memoranda, printed material, clippings, and reports about the Royal Society of Canada. A large portion of this material reflects the efforts of the Society to participate in the formulation and implementation of a national science policy from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. Other topics addressed in the records include an attempt to organize a Federation of Learned Societies (1966-69) under the auspices of the Society and Dolman's participation in the selection and subsequent ceremonies associated with the Order of Canada under his position on the Governor-General's Nomination Committee as President of the Royal Society of Canada.

Design material

This series contains records relating to the design of books and printed work. Content includes paper samples, typography samples and books, marbled paper, page mock-ups and other material that contributes to the aesthetic development of Reid's work.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of two scrapbooks, 1885 to 1939 and 1904 to 1961, containing documents ,
clippings, and photographs relating to the activities of Won Alexander Cumyow and his family. Includes informal photographs of the Cumyow family, newspaper articles documenting Cumyow's career as an official court interpreter, his family life (weddings and funerals) and his activities concerning the Chinese Empire Reform Association, as well as passport certificates pertaining to Cumyow's entry into the United States.

International House series

Series consists of minutes of meetings, correspondence, photographs, reports, brochures, newsletters, printed material, and a scrapbook about the activities of International House, Vancouver, the B.C. Chapter of the International House Association and the International House Association, Inc.

Research Files series

Series consists of notes, correspondence, registers, petitions, receipts, proceedings, printed material, transcripts, and copies of legislation gathered primarily from numerous archival repositories. Series contains seven subseries: Archival Research Material; Charles Sedgewick's Files from Victoria; Material sorted by Geographical Area; Foon Sien Papers; Briefs, Statutes, and Acts; Miscellaneous Project Files; and Subject Files subseries.

Swedish-Canadian Culture and History

Series consists of records about Swedish migration to and within Canada and Swedish-Canadian cultural life. Records include clippings about Swedish Lucia holiday celebrations, manuscripts and research about Swedish-Canadian history, including song books and writing on Swedish literature in BC, and correspondence and rental receipts concerning Swedish film showings in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Materials related to the operations of the Scandinavian School of English, including photographs and sets of English vocabulary and grammar cue cards, are also included. An album containing photographs of Swedish-Canadian migrants with handwritten notes is included.

Typed copies of original letters from Osler

Series contains correspondence sent by Sir William Osler to various recipients. The majority of the letters deal with Osler’s interest in book collecting, while others discuss possible position appointments. There is also a copy of <i>A physician’s anthology of English and American poetry</i>.

Letters to Otto (né Cohnheim) Kestner and/or his wife Eva Kestner

Series consists of letters addressed to Otto Cohnheim, his wife Eva Kestner, or both of them. The majority of the letters are unsorted and arranged by date. The other letters consist of those from Albert Kestner to Otto Cohnheim from Japan, letters of condolence on the death of Otto Cohnheim’s mother, and letters from Rudolf Magnus and other members of the Magnus family.

Personal Records

Series consists of personal records belonging to Hanne and various members of her family including Hedwig Hermann, Elizabeth Fischer, and Otto Fischer. There are records pertaining to Hanne and Hedwig’s immigration process, recipes they collected, and Austrian government records. (These government include birth certificates, baptismal records, police documents, and more.) There are records pertaining to Hanne’s first marriage to Dr. Gustav Wassermann, her education, and material related to Hanne’s last will and testament.

Objects and sound recording

Materials in this series consist of three-dimensional objects from the Klondike gold rush period, the Klondike gold rush centennial, and a sound recording, ranging in date from 1896 to 1997. Some objects in this series originated from businesses and individuals honouring and commemorating the lasting impact of the Klondike gold rush, whereas others were created during the gold rush as tools of trade. Major record types in this series include coins and tokens, but also included are playing cards, textile materials, and a puzzle.

Letters

Series consists of letters from Mary E. Haldane to John Scott Haldane, Letters from Mary E. Haldane to John Scott Haldane and Kathleen, Letters from Mary E. Haldane to Kathleen, Letters to JSH, and other letters.

White River Lumber Company records

Series consists of legal records and miscellanea related to the White River Lumber Co. Legal records include permits, memoranda of agreement, tie notices, and land contracts pertaining to the company’s logging rights. Miscellanea include maps (mostly road maps of Wisconsin and Minnesota), press clippings regarding the company, and photographs.

Original collections series

Series consists of the original collections acquired and preserved by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC) during its existence.

Series consists of thirteen subseries, which correspond to the creators of the records or the research initiatives surrounding the creation of the records: the Emil Bjarnason collection, Ester Bridge collection, Magnus Eliason collection, Frances Hanson collection, Dora Hatton collection, Keith Hoff collection, Helga Howardson collection, Guðrun Johnson collection, and Lillian Sumarlidason collection, as well as the Point Roberts collection, and the New Iceland Research collection.

Memorabilia series

Series consists of documents and other items acquired by Samuel Laycock during his life and career and includes certificates, diplomas, awards; a commemorative wristwatch; twenty Canadian Army badges, buttons, and dog-tags; Mason's badge with its leather case; and a ceremonial Mason's apron.

Journals

Series consists of a letterbook pertaining to Cumyow's various activities, including activities of a business, personal and civic nature, 1888 to 1904, and a notebook listing persons arrested by the Vancouver City Police and the offences committed, 1906 to 1925. Series also includes transcriptions of English letters and transcriptions and translations of Chinese letters in the letterbook.

Charles Spring claims and supporting documentation

Series contains material relating to claims for financial losses as a result of the “Modus Vivendi” and supporting documentation prepared and compiled by Charles Spring. Material relates to claims submitted to the 1896-1897 Bering Sea Claims Commission, the 1913-1915 Pelagic Sealing Commission headed by Louis Arthur Audette, and later efforts at settlement. Material includes instructions for submission of claims, drafts of claims and declarations by Charles Spring, statements from vessel captains, crew, and other involved parties, and accountings of losses and damages. Supporting documentation includes material originally used in the course of business during the 1888-1892 sealing seasons, complied by Spring as evidence. Supporting documentation includes ledgers and journals for sealing business accounts; receipts for expenses, including goods and services, duties and fees, repairs and improvements; vessel registries, licenses, insurance policies, and bills of sale; official vessel log books; transcript of court proceedings against the schooner "Winifred,” and other documents. The series also contains court papers, police charges, and related documents resulting from Charles Spring’s debts, as well as a list of court judgements against him and receipts for payment of monies owed following the receipt of the Bering Sea Claims Commission award in 1898. The series is primarily arranged into files by vessel.

Maps and plans

Records in this series originated as a result of the recording and dissemination of geographical information as the lands, waters, and minerals of the Yukon and surrounding region were increasingly explored and appropriated by non-Indigenous peoples. The series also contains technical drawings, originating from the development of communication and transportation systems, including plans for railways and telephone lines. While the majority of records in this series were created by a corporate or government body, including the Yukon Engineering Services and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, a few items were created by individuals for personal use, such as a hand drawn map of the Klondike gold fields by Tappan Adney. Materials in this series range in date from ca. 1888 to 1995.

Correspondence Series

Series comprised incoming personal and professional correspondence relating to Coulthard's roles as teacher, adjudicator and composer. Also included are some drafts of outgoing correspondence. Series primarily arranged alphabetically and chronologically based on Coulthard's filing system. Series includes two sub-series: a) Coulthard-Poston Correspondence (1948-1979); b) Family Correspondence (1888-1998).

Memorabilia

Series consists of certificates, notes, correspondence, brochures, printed materials, membership cards, recipes, and other documents accumulated or created by Hood.

John Ridington material series

Series consists of a handwritten journal created by John Ridington during his family's trip to Canada by ship (1889), publications and copies of sketches by Ridington, clippings relating to Ridington, and bound copies of his speeches and articles (1911-1945).

Memorabilia series

Series consists of various degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded to L.S. Klinck. Also included are photographs of Klinck with other individuals and images associated with Macdonald College.

William Blackley Bamford

The series consists of eight (8) “line a day” diaries and two (2) scrapbooks created by William Blackley Bamford between the years 1910-1946, reflecting his professional life as an agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, as well as his personal and family life. Bamford’s diaries document many aspects of his professional and personal life. Entries dealing with work life include information about time spent in the office, particular work projects, volume of work and work completed, business meetings and travel, and hirings made, among other topics. Entries related to personal life cover church attendance; visits made and received; birthdays and holidays; personal travel; leisure and recreational activities; purchases; banking and financial information and transactions; voting habits; household and garden chores and repairs; personal and family illness and death; moves and real estate transactions; organizational memberships and responsibilities; gifts received and given; important family events; and personal appointments. The diaries also include information of general interest, such as weather; local, regional, and world news updates, including war news; election results; and sports scores. Some diaries include inserts, such a list of political candidates and a church service program, and memoranda such as lock combinations. The diaries in the series begin when Bamford was residing in St. John, New Brunswick, and continue through a move to Nelson, British Columbia, where Bamford died.

Scrapbooks in the series contain newspaper clippings related to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company; marriages and deaths of note; quotes and poems; pictures; and articles on topics of general interest, including Canadian and American news, society, and history; astronomy; popular entertainment; and the British royal family. Scrapbooks also contain business and personal correspondence and ephemera, including various programs, tickets, and invitations; menus; maps and guides; schedules and bulletins; membership cards and certificates; bills of lading; informational booklets and pamphlets; posters and notices; stamps; travel documents; bills and receipts; radio broadcast transcripts; sketches; statements of earnings; periodicals; and other material. Scrapbooks also contains some notes made by Bamford on Canadian Pacific Railway history. William Blackley Stanley Bamford’s diaries indicate that he worked on his father’s scrapbook after his death.

Letters from William Osler

The majority of the series consists of original letters sent by William Osler, while the remained are typed copies. The letters discuss various publications, doctoral appointments, and patient treatments.

Photographic Records (Preliminary inventory)

The photographs date from the 1890s (pictures of or taken by Douglas' parents and family portraits) . There is a large assortment of childhood pictures of Gilean, her schoolmates etc. Douglas started taking photographs as a child and by her early twenties was an avid and accomplished photographer. Photographs taken by her during the 1920s through the early 1940s are for the most part found in the albums . Pictures taken in the 1950s and 1960s fall into 3 main categories : black & white photos of the B.C. coast taken during her trips on the boats of the Columbia Coast Mission, color and black & white photos of communities in B.C. and eastern
Canada taken during her trips for the W .I., and pictures of Channel Rock. Unfortunately the slides and pictures taken on WI trips are unlabelled and for the most part can only be identified as to general location and date. During the 1970s and 1980s the photographs are almost exclusively of Channel Rock. A representative of these in included in this series ; others may be found at the Cortes Museum and Archives.

Aside from Douglas' own photographs, there are several interesting groups of other people's pictures in this collection: an album with pictures of overseas service during World War I, a group of labelled photographs of Baffin Island, Pangirtung, etc . taken in 1926/27 by an RCMP officer, and photographs from a trip around the world on a freighter in 1919.

Series consists of photographs taken by Douglas (both personal and those used to illustrate magazine and newspaper articles) ; family photographs, both portraits and snapshots ; photographs given to Douglas by friends and correspondents; photographs acquired from archival and commercial sources for use as illustrations ; slides and negatives; film strips.

Books

Series consists of time books, journals, coupon ticket books, information books (activity logs), pay logs, and pilot house log books. There are also notices, agreements, rule and regulations, and applications, and material concerning railway development, equipment, fitting and service profiles. In addition, there is a copy of The Quebec Central Railway Act and Slater’s (confidential) Telegraphic Code. The material is associated with several different railway companies, Victoria R & N.C., the Kettle Valley Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway, and many different areas such as Penticton, Okanagan Landing, York, S. Britain, Vancouver and Victoria.

Research related photographs and maps

Series contains various black and white photographs related to Swedish culture and Swedes in B.C (some labelled and dated). Images include: reproductions of historical photos from the B.C. Provincial Archives and the Vancouver Public Library; hand drawn maps of Sweden on illustration boards and two oversized photographs of railroad workers (unidentified).

Series consists of family photographs from Weston’s childhood, as well as a group of family photographs from his homes in East Sooke (known as “Graymar”) and Victoria.
