Milnor Roberts fonds

The Milnor Roberts fonds consists of letters, reports, notes, accounts, drawings and maps, photographs and printed material relating to his mine field work. Much of the material relates to the work carried out near Camp Robertson and Camp Wilson on behalf of Western Coal and Iron. Roberts' reports to Metropolitan Trust Co., New York, concerned lands acquired by the company from Western Steel Corporation in 1913.

This fonds consists of records related to Darryl Adams' activities as a political and social justice activist as well as his personal life. The fonds consists of three series: personal life and administrative records; activism involvement series; and activism collections series.

Records relating to the first series, Adams' personal life and administrative files include: personal correspondence received by Adams; photographs collected, taken of or by Adams'; school records and club memberships memorabilia; news clippings and other articles; and work related records such as research materials and correspondence.

Records relating to the second series, the activism involvement series, include material created or used by groups that Adams was involved in such as the Vancouver American Exiles Association (VAEA), as well as the Galindo Madrid Case of the 1970s. These records include meeting minutes; correspondence; conference, seminar, and workshop materials; materials by or about other communist, socialist, or leftist organizations; papers, articles, speeches, critiques, letters, and reports on related topics; ephemera and publications, such as newsletters, journals, and clippings; and sound recordings such as interviews Adams' gave on behalf of VAEA.

The last series consists of three major collections that Adams obtained over his lifetime. The first collection is the lefty literature collection that consists of newspapers, magazines, periodicals, booklets and bulletins, and other publications related to leftist themes. The second collection is a poster collection and the last collection is a button collection.

Mary Olga Park fonds

The fonds consists of records generated and assembled by Mary Olga Park related to her personal life and associations, materials related to her career as a self-published writer, artist, and spiritual teacher as well as records related to the psychic experiences that she encountered throughout her life. Records span from Park’s early years in England to 1985, and were predominantly created in Vancouver British Columbia. Records from 1986 – 2017 were either added by Susan McCaslin, or Park’s son, Robert Park. The fonds is arranged into three series: Artistic, Literary, and Musical projects, Personal and Administrative Records and Psychic Records.

The Artistic, Literary, and Musical Projects series features drafts of Park’s musical transcriptions and annotated sheet music collection, hymnal book collection, sketches, pastel, and charcoal artwork, and her literary works in various genres, notably drama and poetry. The fonds also includes materials of her published and self-published works, and educational materials related to both her Sunday school position, and her spiritualist teachings. Record types include publications, drafts (typed, handwritten, and hand-annotated), correction notes, poems, manuals, procedures and instructions for her “learners,” Sunday school teaching material, prayers, study series material, sketchbooks and artworks, musical transcriptions, sheet music, and recordings.

The Personal and Administrative Records series contains records related to the personal life and administrative affairs of Park. Park kept detailed subject files on many different religious and spiritual phenomena, spiritualist writers, and completed her own Bible studies. She also corresponded with family, friends, and her “learners.” Record types include Bible study notes and annotations, family history research, education certificates, childhood books, religious and spiritualist publications, newspaper clippings and ephemera, diaries, notes, and personal notebooks, professional and personal correspondence, subject files on spiritualist matters, astrological charts, audio cassettes, photographs, and a postcard collection.

The Psychic Records series aggregates records Park kept throughout her adult life recording various psychic phenomena which she experienced. The records are textual accounts of clairvoyance, clairaudience, “out-of-the-body” experiences, dream visions and soul sight, voices, manifestations, astral encounters, precognition, and healing. Park often referred back to these notes at later dates and annotated their meanings to her as they informed occurrences in her everyday life. These records informed much of her teachings and publications, but were kept separately in her original record-keeping environment.

International Woodworkers of America-Canada Research Collection fonds

The fonds consists of records collected by Clay Perry related to the International Woodworkers of America – Canada (IWA). It primarily consists of records generated by the union in the course of its operation, records created by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who gathered surveillance on the IWA-Canada and its predecessors for several years, as well as research material collected and created by Perry himself, including transcripts of interviews, news clippings, scrapbooks, and pamphlets and booklets on unions in British Columbia.
The fonds is comprised of the following series: Union records series; Legal records and police files series; and Research materials series.

The Union records series contains records related to the main functions of the IWA, the WIUC, and IWA local chapters, including Local 1-357, of which Perry was a member. These functions included: financial administration, executive elections, producing literature and newsletters, strike activities, and correspondence. Record types include constitutions and by-laws of the union, conference materials, minutes of meetings, press releases, informational pamphlets, correspondence, bulletins and newsletters, news clippings, and executive reports.

The Legal records series contains records related to the IWA’s legal activities, including court disputes over negotiations, strikes, and employee and bargaining rights. It also contains records generated by the RCMP in gathering information on the IWA. Record types include court records, appeals, depositions, legal acts, and police reports on union activity.

The Research materials series comprises materials collected or created by Perry in his research of the history of the union. The series contains news-clippings and scrapbooks related to the IWA and the labour movement in Canada, research notes, transcripts of interviews and oral histories given by union members, publications related to the IWA, the labour movement, and communism, and theses of labour scholars on the IWA.

The Nursing Records series includes a photograph album captioned in detail by Emery covering her year of service overseas from 1944 to 1945, as well as immigration documents, certificates, and correspondence related to her nursing career.

Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia fonds

Volunteer members and elected directors of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) created and kept records as part of their work carrying out the Federation’s major mandate: organizing mountain clubs from throughout the province of British Columbia to represent collective interests for self-propelled access to wilderness areas.

Ranging in date from the 1970’s to ca. 2018, records in the fonds document the FMCBC’s major activities in support of their mandate: administrative and executive activities, the creation of various committees and work undertaken by these committees, advocacy for various lands and parks throughout the province to be considered and maintained for public access, and educating and communicating to both members and the public on topics of relevant interest.

While the FMCBC as an organizational body created the majority of these records, some records in the fonds were created by related organizations, such as the British Columbia Mountaineering Club, governmental committees, or natural resource extraction companies. The majority of records within the fonds are textual, though some other record types are present, including maps, photographs and ephemera.

The fonds contains the following series: Administrative and Executive series, Committees Series, Lands and Parks series, and Education and Communication series.

The fonds reflects Patrice Pratt’s political and labour union careers and her community organization involvement. Records in the fonds relate to Pratt’s various roles within the Federal and Provincial NDP, as President of the BCNDP and as a constituency, committee, council, and party member, the BCGEU and BC Federation of Labour. Records consist of professional and personal correspondence, reports, communications, reference and resource material, convention materials, pamphlets and programs, newspaper clippings, agendas, minutes, resolutions, constitutions, policies, membership lists, campaign and platform materials, publications, campaign buttons, banners and other material. The fonds is divided into three series: Federal NDP, Provincial NDP and Labour Unions. The Provincial NDP series consists of two subseries: BCNDP President and BCNDP Associations, Committees and Advocacy.

As Pratt held various roles simultaneously throughout her career and much of her union work informed her political career, this overlap is reflected in her files. Records are divided into series based on the role held by Pratt at the beginning of the process, resulting in some record dates falling outside the official boundaries of the role she was working in.

Several other projects included in this fonds relate to the Powell River region project, the Bag and Specialty division, and the Bulk Packaging division of MacMillan Bloedel. Anna Banana fonds

Fonds contains materials arising from Anna Banana’s activities in the Mail Art network, her collecting of published materials and artworks, her performance art, exhibitions of her work and others, promotion of her activities, the production of various publications including VILE magazine, and the creation of visual art including artist trading cards, artistamps, collage, drawings and paintings. Materials were created in Victoria and Vancouver from 1964-1973, San Francisco from 1973 to 1982, Vancouver from 1982 to 1995 and the Sunshine Coast from 1995 to 2020, as well as on various tours and travels throughout this whole period. Materials are often focused on the neodadaist movements of San Francisco in the 1970s and beyond, as well as involvement in the Mail Art Network and performance art, and Anna’s personal and professional life.

Bevel Up fonds

The fonds reflects the process of creating the documentary film Bevel Up: Drugs, Users and Outreach Nursing (entitled “Taking Health to the Streets” during production). Bevel Up is a co-production between the Street Nurse Program of the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), with financial support from Health Canada and the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU), and was created in collaboration with Canada Wild Productions Ltd. (Nettie Wild and Betsy Carson).

Filmed over six months in 2006, and over two years in production, Bevel Up was created in collaboration with the street nurses and a crew which included director Nettie Wild, cinematographer Kirk Tougas, producer Betsy Carson, and editor Mike Brockington.

Bevel Up is a 45-minute film, shot in the style of cinema verite (showing people in everyday situations), at the heart of a four-and-a-half-hour interactive DVD that features separate menus on a range of professional, ethical, and legal issues related to the delivery of health care to drug users. There is also an accompanying teaching guide.

The documentary was the brainchild of Caroline Brunt, a street nurse with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control and is designed to help student nurses and seasoned professionals working with drug using populations. Bevel Up: Drugs, Users and Outreach Nursing follows a team of street nurses as they reach out to youth, sex workers and street entrenched men and women in the alleys and hotels of Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. Most importantly, the nurses reflect on attitudes that can make or break the relationship needed to successfully provide practical and nonjudgmental health care.

Materials include master tapes of raw footage, edited video and audio tapes, final copies of the interactive DVD and teaching manual, CDs containing the French translation of the teaching manual, a promotion trailer, a publicity clip reel, printed annotated transcripts, press kits, publicity posters, magazine reviews, a distribution chart and a publicity report.

John Howard Society of British Columbia, Nanaimo Area Council fonds

Fonds consists of the John Howard Society of British Columbia, Nanaimo Area Council’s records of the Mid-Island Diversion Programme. Founded in 1975, the Mid-Island Diversion Programme formulated its aims and operations upon John Hogarth’s Sentencing as a Human Process (1971) and the Law Reform Commission of Canada’s Working Paper No. 7 on diversion (1975). The programme was founded with the following objectives: providing a community-based diversion program as an alternative to the criminal justice system for individuals who committed minor offenses; shifting the responsibility of addressing such offenses from the government to the community; modifying the attitude of the public towards these offenders and towards the criminal justice system; and working towards the decriminalization of certain minor offenses. The programme was overseen by the Nanaimo Area Council Diversion Programme Support Committee with representatives from the Crown Counsel, RCMP, probation officers, John Howard Society members, and interested community members. Within its first few years, the programme expanded from Nanaimo to also include communities in Cowichan, Duncan, Ladysmith, and Parksville. The programme seems to have continued until around 2019, at which point the John Howard Society, Nanaimo Area Council directed its resources towards other restorative justice efforts.

The programme was designed for adult offenders with no more than two prior convictions who had been accused of the following types of offenses, among others: theft under $200, possession of stolen property under $200, assault, causing a disturbance, possession of marijuana, willful damage, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Adults accused of other types of offenses could be accepted or rejected from the programme based on their previous criminal record, social background, and community presence. Acceptance into the programme required a referral from the Crown Counsel, approval from the RCMP investigating officer and victim, and voluntary participation on the part of the alleged offender. Participation in the programme required the alleged offender’s stated intention to take responsibility for their actions, but did not count as a legal admission of guilt. After acceptance into the programme, the client would formulate a diversion plan with a diversion counsellor. The diversion plan generally required the client to complete the following tasks over a three-month period: community work at a non-profit organization; a letter of appreciation to the RCMP Investigating Officer for referral to the programme; a letter of apology to the victim; if relevant, paid restitution for damages; and meetings with a diversion counsellor weekly or every other week. Upon the programme’s completion, the diversion counsellor submitted a final report to inform the Crown, RCMP, and victim.

Fonds documents the administration and operations of the Mid-Island Diversion Programme, and includes statistical reports, procedural manuals, correspondence, case files, rejection files, and other material.

Robert Harris fonds

Fonds documents several projects undertaken by or for the Ministry of Education relating to post-secondary education libraries and other types of post-secondary learning resource centres (LRCs). These include: the Council of Post-Secondary Library Directors (CPSLD)’s Management Indicators for British Columbia College and Institute Learning Resources Centres Project; and several projects undertaken by the Education Advisory Committee to the Ministry of Education. Harris served as invited Ministry of Education Representative to the CPSLD and Secretary to the Education Advisory Committee. Records consist of reports, proposals, standards, questionnaires, manuals, correspondence, policy documents, and other material collected and created as part of these projects.
