Photographs

File consists of photographs taken at Tiananmen Square during the 1989 demonstrations. Although the photographs are undated, the donor stated that they "were taken at the time of the uprising and are largely but not completely about events that took place there both in the days leading up to it and concurrent with the uprising itself and just immediately before its repression." Images depict scenes from the square (large crowds, encampments, individuals), street scenes, views of the park and city, military vehicles in the streets, a plaque (in English) from the Drum Tower of Beijing, smoke in the distance, a burned out bus, and the Goddess of Democracy statue (including what appears to be its unveiling). Several photographs include captions:

The collection is made up of 11 cassette tapes containing 12.5 hours of audio, of the interviews that Angela Codina conducted with the leaders of the Tiananmen Square uprising. The collection also consists of the following textual materials: written transcripts that were later made of the interviews (at the behest of Geraldine Bowman); materials for a book written by Angela Codina; newspaper clippings; periodicals and journals; and correspondence. The collection also contains 274 photographic negatives and 448 colour photographs.
