Biographical history
Writer Russell Kelly was born in Toronto in 1949. He resided in Ontario until the age of 12 when he went to Bristol to live with his grandmother. After five years, in 1967, he returned to Canada and worked at the CBC Radio in Halifax for three years. Mr. Kelly then became a writer and producer in Toronto on the CBC's "The World at Six" and the "The World at Eight" newscasts. After living in Edmonton and heading the CBC newsroom there, he married Joan McMahon. Together they moved to Vancouver where they raised two children. It was in Vancouver that Mr. Kelly became an active spokesperson against violence perpetrated towards women and children. In 1986, coinciding with the opening of Expo in Vancouver, Russell Kelly published his "Pattison: Portrait of a Capitalist Superstar." It sold 23,000 copies for New Star Press within the first two years of its publication. Today it remains one of New Star Press' bestsellers. Towards the end of his life, Mr. Kelly rekindled his interest in photography and, in 1996, a public exhibition was held to display his work. He passed away in 1997.
