History

Margaret Friesen obtained her BA (1966) and BLS (1970), and MLIS (1997) from the University of British Columbia. She began work in the UBC Library in 1970 and became Division Head of Inter-Library Loan in 1972. She was appointed Staff Training and Development Coordinator in 1994. In 2003 Friesen was appointed head of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division, and in 2007 assumed additional responsibilities as Statistics and Assessment Librarian; she held both positions until her retirement in 2012. Friesen served as president of the British Columbia Library Association (1983-1985) as executive liaison to the BC Newspaper Project, and on the Board of Directors of the Pacific Northwest Bibliographic Center (1972-1982). She also served as president of the University of British Columbia Librarians' Association (1985/86) and as librarians representative on the UBC Senate (2002-2011).
