History

FUNG Guy Hong was born in China in 1905 or 1907. He arrived in Canada in 1921 at the reported age of 14. He would be known in Canada as George Fung.

George settled in Vancouver. To earn a living, he worked at a variety of jobs: cook, taxi driver, hotel manager, and managing real estate rentals.

He was married in China to How Chu Yat and had three children. However, they were unable to join him in Canada until 1954, after the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The reunited family lived in Vancouver's Chinatown.

One of his daughters, Jen (known later as Jen Lee) remembers riding on her father's shoulders when he would take the children down to the local theatres (the Lux and the Majestic) to watch movies for $0.25.

George died in October 1975.
