History
GUN Shee, also known as GUN Shee Dere Woon, was born in [開平 Hoiping / Kaiping] county in China around 1888.
In China, she married DAR Woon, who would later be known as David. They had one daughter together in China in 1912—DERE Mee Gim, also known as Daisy.
Her husband first left China for Canada in 1900, where he worked as a labourer on the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1921, he brought GUN Shee along with their daughter to join him in Canada. The family settled in Calgary, where David worked as a tailor, operating a tailoring shop near Centre Street and 4th Avenue. In Canada, GUN Shee and David had nine more children.
The family home was attached to the storefront of the tailoring shop. Behind the home, GUN Shee planted a large garden, where she grew vegetables to sell to local restaurants and markets.
GUN Shee moved along with her family to Vancouver in 1946, where they settled in Vancouver’s Chinatown before moving to Kitsilano in the mid-1950s.
GUN Shee passed away in 1966 in Vancouver.
