Series consists of poetry manuscripts by Daniells in various styles. Daniells published two volumes of poetry and poems in many different journals. However, despite requests from publishers and friends, he did not publish or try to publish the majority of his poetry. His work falls into several different categories. His serious poems were traditional both in subject matter and form. He wrote a considerable amount of religious verse, love poetry, and (latterly) poems about the environment. He enjoyed writing what he described as "occasional verse" and frequently asked his colleagues and friends to do so. In addition, he wrote, with lightning speed, small limericks and verses which he threw away but were often gathered up by others and returned.
Materials in this series were vandalized in a burglary before being transferred to the Archives, and it was impossible to restore the original order. A rough chronological order has been attempted, but if verses were found in folders together, apparently in an order established by Daniells, they have been left together. During the burglary, some of Daniells' teaching materials were mixed in with his poetry, and it is possible that even after processing, a few may still be in this series.

Series consists of offprints and published speeches and represents a considerable number of subjects. Most of them were given to Daniells by friends. He was very interested in cross-disciplinary topics, which is reflected by this series.

Series consists of photographs received by Roy Daniells, James Daniells and Constance Daniells or created by or for them. They have been classified by family group if the information was readily available, and later by form and chronology, for detailed family names, see genealogical materials in Box 10. For other photographs in the Daniells papers, see the Coates/Cassidy subgroup and the occasional photo in the correspondence and subject file series. There are 19 cartes-de-visite, 25 cabinet portraits, c. 59 studio portraits before the turn of the century, plus 92 studio portraits pre-1950, 1 tintype, 2 glass photos, 9 professional photos of student theatre productions, circa 810 photoprints of which a large number are early, most of which are annotated, approximately 250 need more identification. The postcards noted in this series are family photo prints on postcard stock. There is a total, including photographs in albums, of slightly over 1100 photographs in this series. Combined with the Cassidy prints and others in subject files, there are circa 1500 photographs in the Daniells papers.

Series consists of seven sound recordings and two videotapes. The audiotapes include lectures by Daniells, practice tape, radio broadcasts, and an interview. One videotape is a copy of a filmed CBC interview of Ethel Wilson by Daniells. The other is a copy of a film made in 1949-50 by students of Daniells who asked him to read the script.

Carol Coates was born in 1906 in Japan, where her parents were missionaries. She received her early education in Japan and later attended the University of British Columbia. Her future husband, Eugene Cassidy, and Roy Daniells became close friends, sharing a love of literature. The Cassidys were married in 1930 and returned to Japan, where they remained for some years. The correspondence with Daniells is romantic, savouring of spiritual and poetic inspiration and unrequited love (she called him "Dante" and signed herself "Beatrice"). After returning from Japan, Coates taught in Toronto and was connected with Steiner education in New York, England and Edinburgh. She published two books of poetry, Fancy Free and Invitation to Mood.
Eugene Cassidy was also born in Japan to missionary parents, was educated in Japan, and attended British Columbia University. He returned to Japan in 1930, where he taught school and became intensely interested in photography. He and his family came to Canada in 1938, and Cassidy began work as a photographer in Toronto. He and Coates later separated, and Cassidy went to New York to become a successful contract photographer for Conde Nash. His photography, particularly his Japanese landscape work, has received considerable recognition, and in 1981 there was a retrospective of his work at the Art Gallery of Ontario. However, because of his frequent moves, many of his Japanese photographs have disappeared, and it is probable that some of the small prints in this collection are unique.
The sous-fonds consist of letters, hand-made poetry books, photographs, a photograph album, and an album of Japanese "shugibukuso," envelopes the Japanese use to present money. The correspondence dates from 1930 to 1953, the majority of the letters being written in the 1930s from Japan.
The materials in this group of papers were segregated from the main series primarily because they were fragile and easy to use. The correspondence was initially been in chronological order by year with other correspondence. The photographs and small poetry booklets, however, had been kept separately. A large portion of the correspondence between Daniells and Coates was returned to Carol Coates in 1942 and subsequently destroyed.

The fonds consists of Coulthard's incoming family and general correspondence, correspondence from noted English composer Elizabeth Poston, financial records, biographical information, printed material and clippings documenting her involvement in the Canadian and International music communities as an advocate, educator and composer. Also included are original manuscripts of Coulthard's compositions and published and unpublished sound recordings of her work performances. The fonds also contain scrapbooks assembled by Coulthard's mother, Jean Robinson Coulthard, between 1898 and 1929, family photographs, and a photograph album compiled by her father, Dr. Walter Coulthard, depicting the Rossland area (ca. 1902).
Fonds are arranged into two sous-fonds: Jean Coulthard sous-fonds and Coulthard family sous-fonds. Jean Coulthard sous-fonds was organized into the following series: Correspondence (two sub-series, Coulthard-Poston Correspondence and Family Correspondence), Financial and Legal, Biography, Programmes, Publications, Press Clippings, Manuscripts, Sound recordings, Miscellaneous, Photographs, Performance Notes and Remarks, Musical Education and Workshops, Inspirations, Journals and Date Books, and Audio Visual.

Sub-series consists of correspondence between Elizabeth Poston and Jean Coulthard recording their friendship and shared professional interests; sub-series also include a copy of "Elizabeth Poston Post-Centenary 2005 Appreciation," which discusses Poston's friendship and correspondence with Coulthard throughout the years. Sub-series are arranged chronologically.

Series comprised biographical materials relating to Coulthard, including various versions of her curriculum vitae, bibliographies of her compositions, and lists of her awards and achievements. Also included are materials relating to presentations made by Coulthard, including notes and drafts of speeches and transcripts of interviews. In addition, the series contains Coulthard's birth records and staff records related to her time at UBC.

Series consists of a collection of newspapers clippings reviewing, discussing or publicizing Coulthard's compositions or projects. Also included are biographical sketches and interviews with Coulthard in the form of clippings.

Series includes handwritten drafts and sketches of Coulthard's compositions. Series includes complete compositions, later published, and several unidentified fragments and works in progress. Many manuscripts are annotated with rough notes and performance layouts. Also included are handwritten exercises produced during Coulthard's studies with Bernard Wagenaar. A significant accession received in 2000 had over 400 musical manuscripts created between 1917 and 1997. In particular, the numerous photographs from Howard's Eldorado days (1942-1946) depict not only mining operations but also capture aspects of social life in Port Radium, a remote community near the Arctic Circle.

The sub-series consists of MacKenzie's correspondence from 1924 through 1978. It also includes minutes and working papers of various organizations; printed material and ephemera are interfiled throughout if attached to correspondence. The majority of the series is fully indexed by name. This correspondence series reflects the wide-ranging nature of MacKenzie's activities and his contacts. Many of the significant figures on the Canadian scene during this period are represented.
The original arrangement of the correspondence was alphabetical by year, and this system has been maintained. Correspondence post-1962 was not organized. Instead, it has been arranged under the earlier material. Correspondence for the years 1940 44 was divided into three separate units. One unit formed part of the Main Correspondence, while the other two were kept in filing cabinets believed to have originated at the University of New Brunswick. The two separated units formed part of the main series by comparing the letters. Often correspondence with one person on a single subject was split two or even three ways. These units are now interfiled in Main Correspondence (index cards identify the original location of any given piece of correspondence).

The Canadian Centenary Council was established in 1960 by a large group of public-spirited citizens as a clearinghouse and information centre to promote ideas for 1967. Its primary goal was to persuade businessmen and others to contribute ideas, initiative and money to the centennial. In 1962, Mackenzie was appointed president of the Council and stayed with the organization until it was wound up in 1969. The series consists of correspondence arranged chronologically and then alphabetically. The working papers are arranged chronologically. There is also printed material which includes various reports and publications of the Council.

The Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation was established in 1955 with a one million dollar endowment to fund projects in culture and creative activities, health and welfare and higher education. The series consists of correspondence, working papers and printed matter and falls into two sections. Boxes 179 and 180 contain files from 1962 to 1968. There are also many personal letters between Leon Koerner and MacKenzie in this section. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by year, and the working papers are in chronological order. The second section of the series (box 181) covers 1965-1978 and contains correspondence and working papers. This material was found amongst the unorganized boxes of paper deposited by MacKenzie. It has therefore been maintained separately. In this section, the material is separated by year, and within each year, the correspondence is organized alphabetically and the working papers chronologically.

In 1949, the federal government established the Royal Commission on the Arts, Letters and Sciences under the chairmanship of Vincent Massey. Its broad purpose was "an examination of the activities of agencies of the Federal Government relating to radio, films, television, the encouragement of arts and sciences, research, the preservation of our national records, a national library, museums, exhibitions, relations in these fields with international organizations, and activities generally which are designed to enrich our national life, and to increase our consciousness of our national heritage and knowledge of Canada abroad." MacKenzie, Arthur Surveyor, Georges Henri Leveque and Hilda Neatby served as commissioners. Hearings of the commission were held in major Canadian cities (August 1949 - July 1950), with 462 submissions filed. The resulting report played a significant role in shaping the government's cultural policies.
The series consists of the actual working files developed and maintained by MacKenzie while he served on the Massey Commission. It includes correspondence, working papers, briefs presented to the commission, the documents of various special subcommittees, the Royal Commission's report, extensive newspaper clippings and miscellaneous printed material.
