Committees – UBC subseries

Subseries consists of minutes of meetings, briefs, program reports, and procedures outlines pertaining to several UBC committees with which Verner was involved. Subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Printed Materials subseries

Subseries consists of publications in which Verner's works on adult education appeared, bound off-prints of articles written by Verner either alone or in collaboration with others, and works edited by Verner. Also included is a copy of Verner's A.M. thesis from the College of William and Mary. Subseries is arranged in chronological order.

Reports subseries

Subseries consists of reports written and co-written by Verner as a result of consultancy work and research grants he received. Subseries is arranged in chronological order.

Unpublished Manuscripts subseries

Subseries consists of notes and drafts, both handwritten and typescript of articles, and books on maps, mapmakers, and mapmaking written by Verner but never published. Materials in Boxes 69 and 70 are fragile, having some fire and water damage.

Babel subseries

Babel was a newsletter created and circulated within the graduate student community and contains written contributions in prose, poetry, and drawings. Sub-series consists of six editions of the newsletter, filed chronologically from September 1998 to March 1999.

Newsense subseries

The Newsense was a general-interest departmental newsletter which began publication in 1968. It was distributed to faculty, support staff, and students.
Subseries consists of handwritten and typed manuscripts of articles and drafts and paste-ups of each issue. Subseries also contains information about departmental meetings that were published in the newsletter. Files are arranged in numerical order by volume and issue number, from Volume I Number 1 (September 1968) to Volume II Number 10 (April 1970).

Permissions subseries

Subseries consists of permission forms and permission tracking forms for various works that were published in Literature in English.

Course Materials subseries

Subseries consists of notes, outlines, handouts, bibliographies, articles, tests and assignments of the different courses taught by Messenger in the English Department as an Instructor and Associate Professor.

Miscellaneous subseries

Subseries consists of records about creating various types of word games and puzzles. These records include original, copy and draft puzzles, notes, completed puzzles (not started by Messenger), and clippings.

Triple-Ploy subseries

Subseries consists of records about Messenger's regular puzzle column Triple-Ploy, published in Western Living Magazine. These records include correspondence, completed puzzles and revisions.

Board Games subseries

Subseries consists of game boards and draft game boards for three board games: "Cheat,"; "Hugger-Mugger," and an untitled geographic board game. The game boards are in oversize boxes.

Bill C.Y. Li subseries

As the General Manager of the UBC Press from the early 1970s to 1990, Bill C.Y. Li's initial responsibilities for the production process were eventually superseded by competencies in the financial and business-oriented offices of the UBC Press.

Correspondence sub-series consists of drafts of letters and memorandum regarding departmental communication, preparation memos for meetings and seminars, book construction, royalty payments, sales reports, financial support, and topics about the production and layout of material to be published.

Recorded Memoirs subseries

Sub-series consists of spoken-word memoirs by Harry Adaskin, which later became the first four chapters of A Fiddler's World. Recordings are made on reel-to-reel audio tapes at 7½ i.p.s.

Tuesday Night Recordings subseries

Subseries consists of Harry Adaskin's Tuesday Night CBC Radio programme recordings. The scripts for these commentaries are included in Files 4-11 and 4-12. Recordings are made on reel-to-reel audio tapes at 3 3/4 i.p.s.

Atlantic Accord subseries

Subseries consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings and a diary relating to the signing of the Atlantic Accord. The correspondence includes dialogue between Minister Carney and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and Newfoundland’s Minister of Energy William Marshall. The sub-series also consists of a copy of the Atlantic Accord signed by Carney, Mulroney, Premier Brian Peckford, John Crosbie, Bill Marshall and others.

State Functions subseries

Subseries consists of correspondence, official invitations, photographs, slides, and brochures. In addition, the subseries includes programs and menus from the state visits of President and Mrs. Mitterrand and President and Mrs. Reagan. The subseries also contains photographs from various missions by Carney to China and Japan and photographs from the opening ceremony of the Canadian Embassy in Osaka, Japan.

Houser subseries

Subseries consists of drafts, correspondences, clippings, articles interviews, prospectus and notes relating to the creation of Houser: The Life and Work of Catherine Bauer.

World Urban Forum subseries

Subseries consist of drafts, essays, notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, minutes, memorandum, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports, plans, and maps, relating to the World Urban Forum in Barcelona, Spain and Vancouver, Canada.

BC Place Citizen’s Advisory Committee

Subseries consists of drafts, essays, notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, minutes, memorandum, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports, plans, and maps, relating to H. Peter Oberlander’s professional contribution to the BC Place Citizen’s Advisory committee.

DA Architects and Planners subseries

Sub Series consists of correspondence, reports, travel records presentation notes, architect portfolios and a contract related to Oberlander’s time as an Associate Planner with DA Architects & Planners in Vancouver.

Degrees and Awards subseries

Sub-series consists of materials relating to degrees or awards given to Oberlander. Titles for these include Order of Canada, an Honorary Doctorate from UBC and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal among others.

General Correspondence subseries

Subseries consists of general correspondence with various organizations and people. Although most of the correspondence was written by Sydney Friedman, some were written by and addressed to his wife, Constance.

Grant records series

Sub-series consists of completed forms, notices, and correspondence relating to the Institute's application for various grants, as well as records pertaining to institutional reviews by granting bodies and the administration of grant funds.

ADED UBC subseries

Subseries consists of correspondence, memos and reports relating to Griffith's career at the University of British Columbia.

External Affairs subseries

Subseries consists of an organization chart, job descriptions, resumes, budgets, and policy manuals, all of which pertain to the External Affairs division.

APEC Exhibits and Related Documents subseries

The subseries consists of documents compiled by various government agencies and civilian witnesses for exhibit during the RCMP Public Complaints Commission. The exhibits consist of correspondence, witness statements, police statements, photographs and videotapes and other materials considered pertinent for inclusion in the PCC. The series also includes the Commission's Interim Report, published in July 2001. The exhibits are arranged in alpha-numeric order where applicable and then by creating agency or individual.

APEC Alert and Jonathan Oppenheim Documents subseries

The subseries consists of materials created and disseminated by APEC Alert before the APEC summit and in its aftermath and materials collected and created by Jonathan Oppenheim. It consists of posters, pamphlets, and ephemera produced by APEC Alert, information about APEC and the leaders of the APEC countries; News Releases about the PCC and a letter written to UBC faculty. In addition, it includes documents composed by Oppenheim and other APEC Alert members in their attempts to subpoena then Prime Minister Jean Chretien to appear at the RCMP PCC.

Field work subseries

Correspondence, photographs, grant proposals, drawings, and maps related to Sawyer's work in the field, mainly in Peru. Also included are materials associated with Sawyer's role as an expert lecturer on board the M.S. Vistafijord. Some material regarding other work across North America.

Research Fellows subseries

This subseries consists of records related to the supervision and funding of post-doctoral research fellows studying Distance Education and Technology, including correspondence, guidelines, funding information, and bibliographies of writing on distance education.

Faculty of Education and UBC subseries

Subseries consists of information about and from other Faculty of Education’s offices and departments, including the Dean’s Office, Records Office, Teacher Education Office, and Mathematics and Science Education; and to and from UBC’s Registrar Office. Most of the files are memorandum and correspondence. Other records consist of reports and notes. The subseries has been re-organized in alphabet order.

Committee subseries

Subseries consists of information about and from numerous committees, meetings, and councils relating to Industrial Education. Examples include a memorandum, reports, and documentation from the Industrial Education Revision Committee, UBC - BCIT liaison committee, Advisory Council, IETE (Industrial Education Teacher Education) ad-hoc advisory committee, Scholar review committee, and the Harvey report. The subseries has been re-organized in alphabetical order by committee/council name.

Dean’s Office Education Subject subseries

Subseries consist of documents about specific types of education. These documents have been retained in their subseries as they were organized differently than the other documents. Relating primarily to the dates of the Deanship of Dean J.M. Andrews, these documents were unique within the fonds in that they were organized alphabetically, labelled with capital letters, and housed in legal-sized folders. They pertain specifically to different types of education, such as “Art Education,” “Counselling Psychology,” and “Reading Education,” and include records from 1971-1980. The documents include letters, and memos addressed to and from Dean Neville Scarfe, Dean John H. M. Andrews, and Acting Dean Roy Bentley during their respective roles as Dean or Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education during the 1970s and into 1980.
