Lefty literature collection

This subseries contains copies of leftist literature pertaining to political and social justice movements that Adams was interested in. Some of these themes include: anti-war in Vietnam and amnesty rights for American war resisters; political landscape in Latin and South America; socialist, communist, and Marxist-Leninist publications in Vancouver, Canada, and the United States; labour and working class rights; Indigenous peoples rights; women’s rights; minority rights; and publications related to the political landscape of Vancouver and British Columbia. The publications included newspapers; magazines; periodicals; news bulletins and newsletters; flyers, pamphlets and brochures; booklets; articles and reports; and books.

Subseries consists of newspaper clippings, resource files, and correspondence relating to Pro-CAN's legal functions and entanglements. Newspaper clippings follow injunctions that Pro-CAN was involved in, while correspondence is mainly between members of the Network and other organizations sharing useful legal information as well as between Pro-CAN and various law firms representing clients intent on bringing legal action and/or Freedom of Information requests against the organization.

Legal Advocacy

Subseries consists of records related to Manson aiding others with legal matters. The records in this subseries were produced toward the end of Manson's career and after his retirement. These records often pertain to immigration issues, such as communication with governmental departments on behalf of a gardener trying to bring his family over from Hong Kong.

These records include financial records, insurance policies, and correspondence.

Legal documents

Sub-series consists of legal documents of Sir Joseph William Trutch, including his last will and testament and an indenture pertaining to family financial arrangements in preparation for the marriage of his brother John in 1870.

Sub-series consists of documents pertaining to company legal concerns, including records related to the company’s acquisition of Beatty Laminated, Ltd., and records concerning a patent dispute with Unipak Industries in 1959.

Sub-series consists of memoranda of association, Companies Act annual reports, business license, official record of the Press’s name change, share prospectus, promissory note, and author contracts.

Lenkurt papers

The subseries contains materials related to the 1966 wildcat strike by IBEW Local 213 workers at Lenkurt Electric, in which 257 members participated in a walkout that resulted in the loss of their jobs. A large number of the group were women protesting the employer’s demands for them to work overtime. The month-long dispute that followed was at times violent in response to the court injunctions and police presence sought by the employer.

The subseries is predominantly comprised of newspaper articles collected around the time of the strike; there are also legal documents related to Les McDonald’s appeal of his suspension following the Lenkurt strike, pamphlets, correspondence and photocopies of meeting minutes made by Ian McDonald.

Les McDonald papers

The subseries contains materials collected by and about Les McDonald including notebooks on his union activities and his participation at the Community Party Education Camp in 1964, newspaper articles he wrote, documents related to the appeal of his suspension from IBEW Local 213, personal correspondence and photographs of IBEW Local 213 members engaging in a job action in 1965. In particular, there are a large number of postcards that he sent to his mentor, Bill Stewart, while McDonald was traveling in his bid to get the sport of triathlon into the Olympics. The subseries also contains an article Les McDonald wrote about his ascent of the North Arete in 1962 and a notebook related to the Yukon Alpine Centennial Climb conducted in 1973.

Leslie Pinder

Subseries contains textual records pertaining to Leslie Hall's poetry broadside titled <i>35 Stones</i>. The records include drafts and layouts of the broadside, as well as copies of the published edition. Other records include correspondence, order forms, and invoices.

Sub-series consists of incoming letters and envelopes from Ethel Wilson, Wallace Wilson, and Dorothy McNair to Cheney.

Sub-series consists of incoming and outgoing material, some of which was exchanged between Emily Carr and Nan Cheney, some of which was collected by Cheney.

Sub-series consists of incoming and outgoing material including several letters written by Cheney to Humphrey Toms and other letters written to or collected by Cheney.

Liberal Party

Subseries consists of records related to the Liberal Party of Canada and, in particular, the Liberal Party of British Columbia. The majority of the records in this subseries date from Manson's time as an MLA.

These records include early Liberal publications such as the "Canadian Liberal Monthly" and, predominantly, correspondence between Manson and Liberal Associations across British Columbia. Manson grouped many of these files under the headings "Liberal Associations" or "Liberal Ass’n."

Lillian Sumarlidason collection

Subseries consists of genealogical records of the Sumarlidason family, recordings of Sumarlidason’s recollections in 1990 and 1991, as well as a biography of Sumarlidason. The subseries also includes a copy of the Icelandic Canadian, Winter 1979, in which Sumarlidason wrote an article about her mother, an essay about Iceland written by M.C. Christian, and the Sumarlidason family scrapbook. The scrapbook contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, discharge papers, and ephemera.

Linda Hall Pinder

Subseries contains textual records pertaining to Linda Hall Pinder's "The Carriers of No: After the Land Claims Trial" publication in Lazara Press' Discussion Series. The subseries contains drafts of the publication, as well as the final copy. Other records include correspondence, cataloguing information, and book catalogues.

Literature

Subseries contains publications on silvicultural practices by external entities in the 1980s and 1990s. The external entities include government departments and silvicultural companies.

Lumber Mills Branch meetings.

Sub-series contains meeting minutes relating to the Lumber Mills Branch meetings, a division of the British Columbia Lumber Manufacturers Association. Materials consists of minute books which document the meetings proceedings including issues such as lumber exports to the United States, market surveys, transportation rates, and reports from various sub-committees.

Lumber Promotion Committee.

Sub-series contains minutes relating to the Council of Forest Industries’ Lumber Promotion Committee. Material consists of meeting minutes that include meeting proceedings, attendees and a brief summary of the items discussed. Topics of discussion include budgets, promotion of lumber in different countries, and synopses of reports.

Madeline Harrower Collection

Records of and relating to Madeline Harrower (1867-1891), who served as a nursing sister during the Boer War and World War I, were retrieved by a dumpster diver in Kerrisdale, Vancouver in 2000. Many of these were later sold at auction. Lois Blais subsequently engaged in a research review of this collection. Harrower was born in Australia and moved to Vancouver in the late 1940s.

Subseries consists of material related to Blais’ unfinished research into the historical significance of Madeline Harrower.

Magazines featuring Lansdowne's artwork

Subseries consists of copies of magazines in which Lansdowne's artwork is featured and/or in which an article about Lansdowne has been published. Some of these publications include Maclean's, Audubon, Canadian Audubon, Nature Canada, National Wildlife, Vanguard, and many more.

Magnus Eliason collection

Subseries consists of correspondence to both Magnus Eliason and Guðmundur Eliason, Magnus Eliason’s journals, writings, collected ephemera, and photographs. Included in Magnus’ collection are two journals: the Icelandic Canadian, March 1946 and Tímarit Þjóðræknisfélags Íslendinga.

Mail art - Fin de Siecle 2000

Subseries was created from 1999-2000. While the internet had been present previously, more and more correspondence is conducted virtually during this period, with discourse occurring which questions the validity of email as “true” mail art, which is reflected in much of the material. Printing also becomes a digitally sourced endeavor, with more mail art reflecting access to stylization made available with programs like Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop.

Items in this subseries are predominantly letters and envelopes, often decorated, but also include photographs, drawings, xerox art, found objects and small sculptural items, collage, and other visual mediums, often integrated into the letters and envelopes. Banana would often print out emails as well, especially those which were distinctly related to the question of mail art and its transition into a digital sphere, and received much correspondence and art obviously created through digital means.

Mail art - final years

Subseries was created from 2008-2016. It is made up of mail art and other correspondence received by Banana through the Mail Art Network during this time. This subseries contains some of Banana’s last interactions with the mail art network, and Banana’s interactions with existing friends and colleages continue to predominate its contents.

Items in this subseries are predominantly letters and envelopes, often decorated, but also include photographs, drawings, xerox art, found objects and small sculptural items, collage, and other visual mediums, often integrated into the letters and envelopes.

Mail art show and publication invitations and catalogues

Subseries includes records of invitations and catalogues Banana received for various mail art shows and publication over the course of her involvement with the Mail Art Network, as well as some works which she compiled for inclusion in those shows. This includes letters of invitation directly addressed to Banana, open calls for submission, lists of participating artists, show posters and booklets, and packets of mail art sent for specific shows or publications.

Materials include show catalogues, posters, invitation letters, postcards, zines, envelopes, and graphic materials.

Management meeting minutes.

Sub-series contains minutes relating to the Council of Forest Industries management meeting. Material consists of meeting minutes, which outline the financial reports, public relations, discussion about committee progress with specific emphasis on the International Trade Commission.

Mannequin rising

Sub-series consists of drafts and editor notes of Miki's book of poetry titled Mannequin Rising. The back cover on the book reads, "In Mannequin Rising, Miki describes a world of consumerism, and answers the visual cacaphony of commodities and window displays with a series of poems and photomontages that reflect the uncanny juxtapositioning he sees all around him."

Sub-series contains three unpublished manuscripts on Emily Carr.

Manuscripts: essays, poems, and presentations

Sub-series consists of drafts of essays, poems, and lectures that Miki wrote. The essays and lectures included in this sub-series are predominantly works of literary criticism related to Canadian poetry and political commentary and analysis on social and cultural issues related to race, racism, multiculturalism, and the Japanese Canadian redress movement. The sub-series also contains essays Miki wrote as a graduate student, a file of drafts related to an issue of the journal Estuaire which Miki guest edited, and reviews by Miki of works by other authors.
