Thesis (Phase II) sub-series

This subseries includes proposals, tables, drafts, and a final bound copy of Whittaker’s 1967 PhD thesis: “Psychological Characteristics of Alienated, Nonconformist, College-Age Youth as Indicated by AVL, OPI, ACL, and SVIB M/W Group Profiles.” In his thesis, Whittaker indicates that his analysis is a continuation of the initial non-student research and published paper authored in collaboration with Watts.

Student activism coverage series

This series includes annotated newspaper and magazine articles, clippings, and academic publications collected by Whittaker that relate to student activism in the 1960s and 1970s.

Non-student study (Phase I) series

This series consists primary of research material for the first phase of Whittaker’s study of non-students at Berkeley. Material includes questionnaire drafts and results, codebooks and tables, notes, and correspondence. Also included are proposals and drafts for a 1967 paper co-authored with Watts titled “Psychological Needs and Nonconformity.” A note with the received files indicates that some open-ended question results and analysis (questions 12, 15-16, 19-23) have been removed and filed with his Phase II material, most of which is not currently in the possession of University Archives.

Free Speech Movement study series

This series contains research data and notes, codebooks, and clippings related to a study conducted by William A. Watts and David Whittaker of students involved in the 1964 Free Speech Movement. Also included is correspondence and drafts from the resulting paper authored by Watts and Whittaker and published in 1966: “Some Socio-Psychological Differences Between Highly-Committed Members of the Free Speech Movement and the Student Population at Berkeley”.
