Leonard G. McCann Santo Tomas Internment Camp collection

The contents of this collection pertain to the Santo Tomas Interment Camp in the Philippines during WWII. The camp was active from 1942 to 1945 and housed over 4,000 prisoners-of-war.

Records reflect the internal administrative structure and functioning of the camp, daily life of internees, the political activities surrounding the camp, and the personal experiences of Barbara and Leonard McCann.

The collection consists of documents, archival records, photographs, ephemera and artifacts related to three broad themes: British Columbia history, immigration and settlement and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Included are the archival fonds of the Yip family and Yip Sang Company, the Dart Coon Club and Chinese Freemasons of Victoria, Hugh G. Robinson (regarding the S.S. Greenhill Park Explosion), Rev. MacDonnell (regarding the Clandonald colony of Scottish immigrants in Alberta) and the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service. Includes documents, ephemera and artifacts of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, including records of travelers on CPR rail and steamships.

B.C. Midwifery Collection

Meagan Davies part of the midwifery collection consists of 22 DVDs of interviews conducted throughout B.C.

Abra Palumbo collected printed papers kept about the midwifery movement in the 1970s and 80s in B.C. Most of the materials are official forms, manuals, or articles utilized by the midwifery movement.

Collection consists of recordings of a variety of UBC events including installations of university presidents, debates, social functions, building openings, meetings of campus student and administrative organizations, and speeches by visiting politicians and dignitaries. In addition, the collection includes recordings of student protests on campus. Specific provenance of items is unclear.

Britannia Mine Oral History Project Collection

The fonds consists of project background and administrative information as well as student-generated material arising from their oral interview exercise. The student material consists of two parts generated in 1987 and 1988. The first (Box 2) includes copies of questions, transcripts and student comments on the interviews. The inventory also lists the oral history tape number. The second includes only a copy of the students’ commentary.

Armed Forces at UBC Oral History Project Collection

The collection consists of audio recordings and transcripts created from interviews conducted as part of an oral history project to document the evolution of military training on campus. Interviewees discuss campus military organizations and student participation in war as well as peace movements at UBC. The interviews provide information about campus life and the interviewees' extensive experience in the Canadian Armed Services.

Community Arts Council of Vancouver Collection

The collection consists of duplicate copies of Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV) records given to Melva Dwyer. The records are made up of two series. The first includes general material about the organization - Annual Reports (1953-1956, 1967), Special Projects (1955-1967) including reports of the Vancouver Festival Society, Council Briefs and records from the British Columbia Arts Resources Conferences (1957-1960). The second series comprises records specifically from the Civic Arts Committee of the Community Arts Council of Vancouver.

UBC 50th Anniversary Sound Collection

The collection consists of 20 audio recordings one of which is a recording of the UBC 50th anniversary commemorative ceremonies on 1 October 1965, and the others being CBC interviews with prominent alumni and former faculty on 7-8 September 1965.

John Cooper Robinson collection

Fonds consists of over 4,600 photographic prints, negatives, glass lantern slides, and postcards, the majority of which were either taken or collected by Robinson. Many of the photographs relate to Robinson’s work as an Anglican missionary in Japan in the 1890’s through the 1920’s. These photographs document a unique time in the Japan’s history: the Meiji-Taisho period when the country was transitioning away from being a feudal society and beginning to open up to the West. This collection is one of the few comprehensive records of this time period. Subject matter of the photographs includes everyday life, work, and scenery in Japan, as well as the lives and works of missionaries.

Also included in the collection are photographs from Canada and the Robinson family’s travels around the world, as well as reproductions of missionary and religious texts or graphics.

While many of the photographs were taken by Robinson, others were taken by his children, professional photographers, or unidentified individuals.

The fonds also includes 10 maps of Japan used during Robinson’s missionary work, some with annotations of proposed Canadian jurisdictions in Japan.

Collection consists of records collected by Catherine B. Clement towards her research project on the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act that will mount a 100th year commemorative exhibition in 2023. The collection includes Chinese Immigration and other registration and identification certificates contributed by individuals, families and organizations across Canada.
