[Biographical Files]

Series consists of 2.4 m of textual records and graphic material related to nurses who have made significant contributions to their profession in British Columbia. They include records related to the person's life and career, photographs, copies of publications, memories and biographical information and other records related to nursing activities in B.C. A brief biography of each subject is included.

An item level description of file contents is located at the front of each file. A full index of all files created by the B.C. History of Nursing Society Archives with biographies, contents list and additional information is available, located in RBSC-ARC-1831-102-15.

Files are arranged alphabetically by individual's last name.

[Artifacts]

Series contains assortment of artifacts including graduation pins, insignia, rings, badges, medals, and a bracelet related to various BC and Canadian nursing schools, awards and other designations. Includes graduation pins from UBC School of Nursing, Vancouver General Hospital, Royal Jubilee Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Royal Columbia Hospital, Nanaimo General Hospital, Royal Inland Hospital among others. Graduation anniversary pins for UBC SON and several UBC Sorority pins also appear in the series. Also includes, pins for RNABC Award of Honour, Nurses Administrators Association of BC, Northern Territory Nurses Registration, Mary Agnes Snively Memorial Medal and Licensed Practical Nurses Association of BC. Series contains several artifacts from outside British Columbia, Trained Nurses Association of India, Winnipeg and Edmonton General Hospitals and The General Nursing Council for England & Wales. Contains 1 pin and a badge mounted in frames, some items arrived with custom storage boxes.

Lobbying and Advocacy

Series contains materials related to the RDPPG advocacy around nursing and health care issues and government lobbying initiatives. Documents related to meeting and communication with local representatives and MLAs, including contact information and follow up correspondence protocols. The series includes Reports and Documents produce by the National Forum on Health from 1995-1998. Advocacy materials relate to the preparation of the Submission to the Royal Commission on Health Care and Costs in partnership with the RNABC in 1990. Record types include correspondence, minutes, draft, summary and final reports, draft resolutions, lobbying protocol, minutes, memorandum, and reference materials. Final copies of the RNABC Submission to the Royal Commission on Health Care and Costs, Closer to Home: Summary and full report are arranged in this series.

Workshops and Events

Series consists of records related to various events hosted by, organized, or participated in by the RDPPG. The group hosted several meetings, workshops, and events throughout the calendar year. Materials document the planning, scheduling, communication, topics, and speakers at these events. The series also includes records from the Chapter’s participation in Nurses Week, including promotional material, correspondence, display planning and photographs. As well as event programs from the 1997 RNABC Awards. Substantial material is associated with the 30th Anniversary of the Chapter, celebrated on May 13, 1997, including invitations, planning, memberships lists, event programs, photographs, and other historical documentation relating to the Chapter. Two scrapbooks containing significant textual and photographic material document various events, programs, workshops, and activities from the Chapter’s existence. Record types include correspondence, communications, photographs, invitations, programs, pamphlets, notes, financial documents, scrapbooks, a tote bag, autograph album, and other material.

Administrative and Operational Records

Series documents the administrative and operational functions of the RDPPG. Substantial general Chapter meetings and Executive Committee minutes, agendas, attendance sheets, reports, and correspondence are included from 1967-2002. Correspondence and records created and received by the Corresponding Secretary and other executive members are also included. By-laws, resolutions, duties of the Executive Officers and Chapter letterhead are arranged in this series. Records also relate to special projects including member surveys, and member recognition. Documents related to partnerships and collaboration with the Richmond Health Board, Registered Nurses Foundation, and RNABC also appear in this series. Financial information includes annual audited reports, proposed budgets, education sponsorships for members and ledgers of annual finances. Other records relate to the Student Bursary offered by the Chapter, including pamphlets, applications, correspondence, photographs, recipient information and promotional efforts. Working copies of the publication Richmond-Delta Chapter History 1967-1997: Thirty Years of Professional Growth, written by members Ethel Warbinek and Beth Fitzpatrick with an additional chapter are arranged in this series.

[Oral Histories]

Series consists of oral histories dating from 1987 to 2013. Oral histories are arranged alphabetically by the subject’s last name. Many exist in multiple formats or have multiple cassettes and/or CDs. If these are sequential, i.e., an interview that takes more than one tape, the first is given a prime number (OH3) and subsequent tapes identified as (OH3a, OH3b, etc.) Wherever it is known, they are identified as copies or originals. Interview numbers, which are based on the chronology of the interviewing, are also indicated.

A number of the oral histories were not done by the original committee. Transcripts of a number of oral histories, mostly from interviews with Beth McCann, are in the School of Nursing subfonds. Some individuals were interviewed more than once. Each interview is numbered separately. Audiocassettes of enduring interest and of sufficient quality have been copied to an MP3 format.

Hard copy summaries of the oral histories are arranged alphabetically in this series. These are of greatly varying extent and quality. Both audio cassettes and CDs often have extensive notes on their cases. Other documentation and related material is often included. Interview summaries can be found in RBSC-ARC-1831-013-11 (3 folders) to 013-12. A detailed Oral History index is located in RBSC-ARC-1831-013-13, see finding aids note for more information.

Most of the audiocassettes date from 1987 to 1990, although a number are either earlier or later. Most of the CDs date from 2006 to 2013.

[Original Collections]

Series consists of 3 m of textual records and additional graphic and audiovisual materials. The textual records include a comprehensive collection of UBC student cards from 1921 to 1994, many of which include detailed information about individual nurses. Records from the Kootenay Lake Hospital, the Kelowna General Hospital and Prince Rupert General Hospital date back to the early years of this past century. Pamphlets dating from 1887 documents aspects of nursing history. Theses by Margaret Campbell, Beverly Du Gas and Helen Niskala are among seventeen theses, dissertations and papers included. Miscellaneous photographs without sufficient provenance are included in this classification. Audiovisual materials on audio and video cassette, CD and DVDs are arranged as subseries.

Published and reference material

Series consists of records accumulated by the History of Nursing group. These relate to both BC and other jurisdictions, but all have a relevance to the history of nursing.

History of the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia and its membership

Series includes histories of the RNABC, the Richmond Delta chapter and the South Peace chapter and its membership. It also includes a primary document with photographs regarding the 1964 conference on Continuing and Higher Education for Nurses, hosted by the Fraser Valley District of the RNABC.

Events, programs and display records

Series consists of graphic, audio and textual material regarding events, programs and displays mounted by the BCHNPPG. It includes promotional flyers and pamphlets for events and programs, photographs of display material, and audio recordings of lectures presented to the Group. Also includes textual material relating to the International History of Nursing Conference June 12-15, 1997, which was sponsored by the Group.

BCHNPPG Chapter Groups: Victoria

The incentive to organize a Victoria chapter of the HoN Group stemmed from the History of Women showcase October 1 and 2, 1994 at the British Columbia Museum. The first meeting was held on January 30, 1995, with Kari Moore elected President. Its main focus was to gather oral histories.

Series consists of minutes, reports, correspondence and photographs relating to the Victoria Chapter of the BCHNPPG.

Formation of the B.C. History of Nursing Professional Practice Group

Series consists of textual records preparatory to and shortly after the formation of the B.C. History of Nursing Professional Practice Group in 1991. Includes original constitution and bylaws, meetings of interim History of Nursing Group meetings (1990), correspondence, early newsletters, forms and membership lists, as well as job descriptions for Executive Committee and committee chair positions. It also includes a file of information on the change of this organization into a Society in 2008.

Dolls and Costumes

Series consists of records dating from 1985 to 2011. Series is arranged into two subseries: Dolls and Costumes. Materials related to Sheila Zerr's interests in both dolls and costumes relating to nursing history. Booklets, photographs and information related to numerous displays and presentations prepared by Zerr are in the Dolls subseries. Other materials include photographs and booklets of costumes for adults often modelled by Sheila Zerr and others at nursing events, and mounted as exhibits.

Nursing Division of the Alumni Association of the University of British Columbia

The Alumni Association was formed to develop and foster a feeling of fellowship among alumni, encourage and support educational opportunities, to facilitate closer liaison between the faculty and students, and provide financial and other support for School of Nursing faculty and students.

Series consists of records documenting the activities of the Alumni Association.

Student Information

Series consists mainly of general information related to students in the nursing
program. Some information on individual student marks is also included. List of UBC SON graduates from 1920-1989 are included.

Administrative Records

Series consists of records documenting the various administrative functions of the School of Nursing.

Student Papers

Series consists of papers on various topics by UBC School of Nursing students, mostly upper level or graduate. Many are for courses, particularly Nursing 440 (Nursing Care of Adults and Families), offered by Ethel Warbinek or Denise Fargey. Five of the papers are by Anne Wyness.

Arranged alphabetically by name of student.

Standing Committees

Standing Committees of the UBC School of Nursing were responsible to the Faculty Caucus through the Internal Committees.

Series consists of records of a number of these committees, which in 1980 numbered thirteen. Not all committees are represented, and some are represented by only a small portion of their records. Most include some minutes, and some include other records relevant to their operations.

Model for Nursing

Work began in the late 1960s on a theoretical framework that would provide a basis for specific standards against which the quality of nursing care could be evaluated. Under the guidance of Muriel Uprichard, with the committee chaired by Margaret Campbell, the UBC Model for Nursing ”a mental image of nursing’s unique mission in the real world of nursing”, resulted. Implemented in the early 1970s, it was conceived to provide a “framework for viewing nursing’s unique function”.

Series consists of Margaret Campbell’s 1987 report on the nursing model and minutes of the committee to create, implement and monitor the program.

Course Co-ordination

Team meetings co-ordinated efforts by faculty to impart consistency and
high standards to courses offered, and facilitate communications among instructors in the nursing program.

Series consists of minutes of meetings and materials related to the offering of courses in the nursing program.

Meetings of this Occupational Health Nurses group, a Professional Practice Group of the RNABC, were held, generally semi-monthly, in the Lower Mainland.
