ASA Research

While an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Nursing, Sheila Zerr devised an instructional program for nurses to increase people’s awareness of non-prescriptions drugs, focusing on ASA (aspirin). Funded by Sterling Drug Ltd., the project was designed to lead to a broader understanding of the drug and its effects. The information was designed to be passed on to nurses, and from them to the wider community.

This committee provided a forum for the exchange of information on common problems in different institutions and identified the needs and opportunities for ongoing development. It may advise the Academic Council regarding the equivalency of courses given at one institution or university as compared to courses given at another institution or university. Because of budget constraints and the similarity of the work of this committee to the Nursing Education Council, it appears to have been disbanded in about 1983.

Dolls

Sheila Zerr writes “My fascination with dolls and nursing history began when teaching the history of nursing to first year students in 1971. At this time a display of portrait dolls illustrating the various historical periods of nursing was created. This collection has continued to grow and take form.” The changing costumes throughout the years provide insights into both the history of nursing and the changing perceptions of women in this role.
