Series consists of typescripts of books. Some files contain reference materials, notebooks of handwritten drafts, correspondence and other related materials. The Vancouver file and Dickens of the Mounted file include photographs. The series is arranged alphabetically by title.

Series consists of "sermons" given Douglas on the World Day of Prayer (1957 - 1974), research for them, talks to and reports on meetings of the local Whaletown W .A. and correspondence.

Douglas joined the Whaletown Women's Institute in 1950, shortly afterwards becoming president of the local branch. She served on district, provincial and national boards as B .C. publicity director and F.W.I .C. director
of public relations and as president of the North Vancouver Island district. She edited the brief which won the Tory Award for the FWIC and was editor of "Modern Pioneers", a history of the W .I. published in 1960. Series consists of typescripts of articles and news releases, notes and research for articles, and correspondence.

From an early age, Douglas was an avid letter writer, and maintained many correspondences throughout her life. This series includes both incoming and outgoing personal correspondence, filed separately except where Douglas had kept both together.

This series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence with publishing firms, periodicals and newspapers, writing associations and others regarding the publication of Douglas' works. Original groupings have been maintained.

The photographs date from the 1890s (pictures of or taken by Douglas' parents and family portraits) . There is a large assortment of childhood pictures of Gilean, her schoolmates etc. Douglas started taking photographs as a child and by her early twenties was an avid and accomplished photographer. Photographs taken by her during the 1920s through the early 1940s are for the most part found in the albums . Pictures taken in the 1950s and 1960s fall into 3 main categories : black & white photos of the B.C. coast taken during her trips on the boats of the Columbia Coast Mission, color and black & white photos of communities in B.C. and eastern
Canada taken during her trips for the W .I., and pictures of Channel Rock. Unfortunately the slides and pictures taken on WI trips are unlabelled and for the most part can only be identified as to general location and date. During the 1970s and 1980s the photographs are almost exclusively of Channel Rock. A representative of these in included in this series ; others may be found at the Cortes Museum and Archives.

Aside from Douglas' own photographs, there are several interesting groups of other people's pictures in this collection: an album with pictures of overseas service during World War I, a group of labelled photographs of Baffin Island, Pangirtung, etc . taken in 1926/27 by an RCMP officer, and photographs from a trip around the world on a freighter in 1919.

Series consists of photographs taken by Douglas (both personal and those used to illustrate magazine and newspaper articles) ; family photographs, both portraits and snapshots ; photographs given to Douglas by friends and correspondents; photographs acquired from archival and commercial sources for use as illustrations ; slides and negatives; film strips.

This series contains material belonging to the McCanns prior to their evacuation and internment. It includes health records and school work.

The primary contents of this series are exercise books of Leonard McCann during his time at St. Giles British School in Shanghai prior to his internment at Santo Tomas. The exercise books contain notes from classes including geography, history, French, maths, dictation, writing, Latin as well as general notes.

The exercise books in this series were intentionally kept by Barbara McCann and among the items that were brought to the internment camp at Santo Tomas. She continued to keep these books for the duration of the internment and after.

Records in this series include items of an ephemeral nature created and used during WWII, specifically at or relating to the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Records include envelopes, sets of cards, examples of daily sanitary paper items, and temporary currency.

Records in this series include material used in the administration and functioning of the internment camp. Items include work order forms, room assignment forms (as used by Barbara McCann in her role as a room monitor), punched meal ticket cards and drawn maps.

Series contains sketches, drawings, paintings, preparatory manuscripts, correspondence, reviews and royalty reports related to the production and sale of the book, <i>Pettranella</i>. Two watercolour paintings used for the cover and page one of the book were transferred with a later (2006) accrual, however, these paintings have been housed with the rest of the series. Blades enclosed an explanatory note with the 2006 accrual, stating that the artwork was returned to her recently when the publisher, Groundwood, moved their office and discovered the two watercolours.

Series contains sketches, drawings, paintings, a preparatory manuscript, correspondence, reviews, trade catalogues, royalty reports and award related materials, which document the production, sale and critical reception of the book, <i>A Salmon for Simon</i>.

Series contains a contract, a BC Book Prize certificate, a storyboard, sketches, drawings, paintings, preparatory manuscripts, correspondence, notes, clippings, research materials and royalty statements related to the production and sale of the book, <i>A Ride for Martha</i>. Some oversized materials are housed in a separate container; please see the file list for further detail.

Series contains a storyboard, page layout, sketches, rejected and accepted artwork, and reviews for the book, <i>Six Darn Cows</i>. Other documents relating to the publication of <i>Six Darn Cows</i>, can be found in the “Anna’s Pet/Six Darn Cows Materials,” series. These materials are in a separate, intermingled series because the documents found in the files relate to both books. The two works were published as part of the same series, around the same time. As a result, the creator filed many of the documents together. They have been maintained as a separate, integrated series in order to reflect the original organizational system utilized by Blades.

Records in this series indicate that Blades was unsatisfied with the publication of <i>Jacques the Woodcutter</i>, so therefore purchased her rights to the artwork back from the publisher, and collaborated with author Kit Pearson to re-tell the story in <i>The Singing Basket</i>, published by Douglas & McIntyre in 1990.
Series consists of research materials, contracts (including the contract for <i>Jacques the Woodcutter</i>), sketches, correspondence, reviews, royalty documents and artwork pertaining to the publication of <i>The Singing Basket</i>. Note that the final artwork for <i>The Singing Basket</i>, is also largely the final artwork for <i>Jacques the Woodcutter</i>. The artwork has been annotated by the creator to indicate which paintings were used in which publication.

Series consists of sketches, drawings and watercolour paintings related to the production of <i>A Candle for Christmas</i>, including 16 watercolour paintings used for the book. Also included are correspondence and notes regarding the production of the book, royalty documents and clippings and correspondence regarding reviews of the book.

This series contains reviews of A Boy of Tache.

This series consists of materials related to the production and publication of By the Sea: An Alphabet Book, including correspondence, draft illustrations, and information regarding the sale of the original materials. In 1986 Blades received the Elizabeth Mrazik Cleaver Canadian picture book award for By the Sea for the "best illustrated Canadian picture book in 1985." The manuscript and illustrations were sold to the National Library (now Library and Archives Canada) in Ottawa in 1987, but photocopies of these materials are included.

Series consists of documents created by civil rights organizations
concerned with Japanese-Canadian rights:

1. Japanese Canadian Committee for Democracy (Toronto, ON) membership application forms (three copies, blank). Forms request name, age, address, occupation, and telephone number, and a membership fee of two dollars.

2. Newsletter of the Citizenship Defence Committee (Toronto, ON) issued on April 25, 1946 by Kunic Hidaka, executive secretary. The newsletter discusses financing for an appeal to the privy council, the engagement of an English barrister for the appeal, the Ontario provincial convention, and time limits on permits and placement allowances.

3. Memorandum issued by the Canadian Committee, World Federation of Democratic Youth (Toronto, ON) on June 22, 1946 concerning deportation and internment of Canadians of Japanese ancestry.

Series consists primarily of documents from the colonial era of British Columbia, including material related to early settlers on Vancouver Island, the Fraser River and Cariboo/Yukon gold rushes, and the courts. The bulk of the series consists of correspondence, but also includes commission, coroner’s inquisition, court calendar, deposition, jury list, last will and testament, prospectus, receipt, and subpoena.

The series contains records related to the projects and lobbying activities undertaken by Vancouver Status of Women (VSW) in BC from the early 1970s to 2015. Significant projects completed during this period include the publication of Kinesis, which was released ten times a year from 1974-2001, the Single Mother’s Resource Guide, which was released every two years beginning in 1991, reports on a range of topics, and the production of anti-gender role stereotyping kits for daycare and preschool workers. In addition, VSW offered a range of services to women, including research assistance, information gathering and dissemination, a library, a lawyer referral service, counselling referrals, community information and women’s movement referrals, endorsements and support letters, and advocacy on behalf of individuals. The organization put on a number of events: training on public speaking, assertiveness, financial management, and advocacy/organizing; workshops on useful tools for single mothers; panels and lectures; picnics; and annual parties. VSW also lobbied its municipal, provincial, and federal governments and other organizations about issues affecting women in Canada, encompassing such diverse topics as welfare, family law, sexual assault, and housing.

Record types in the series include the following: VSW briefs, press releases, submissions to governments, and research reports; correspondence with members of the public, members of governments, and other women centers; songs, stories, and photographs for anti-gender role stereotyping kits; copies of the Single Mother’s Resource Guide; Kinesis back issue indexes, editorial board correspondence, events' brochures and posters, reader surveys, volunteer training kits, and volunteer applications.

Series consists of manuscripts by various authors about labour history in BC and Canada. Contents include books commissioned or created by various BC labour union locals, a graduate thesis by Patricia Gwen Atherton, a bibliography, newsletters, pamphlets, clippings, and calendars. Manuscript unions and locals include the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, the Pacific Reforestation Workers Association, the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers, the BC Government Employees Union, and the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Industrial Union (Local No. 1), among others.

The series contains records pertaining to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) administrative and executive activities. These activities fall into several categories: financial administration, which included grant applications to governments and other organizations, budgeting, tax payments, bill payments, and resource distribution amongst staff; committee administration; volunteer administration; employment offers and employee management; correspondence with other organizations, particularly women centers in Vancouver; and strategic planning for the organization as a whole. Records in the series range in date from the early 1970s to 2016.

This series contains a handwritten journal of notes relating to the development of Communism.

Records relating to section meetings. The series is organized into two subseries : Proposals and Minutes and Meetings. Theres is some overlap in the two subseries.

Documents include letters concerning termination, letters confirming appointment, Revenue Canada 1982 tax exemption returns, letters of reference and monthly payment statements. Also included are several files including curriculum vitae and correspondence.

This series consists of correspondence with and about companies relating to membership, payment of dues and labour disputes. The files were originally arranged into three separate groupings. This order has been maintained even though the nature of the correspondence appears to be the same. The files are arranged in alphabetical order by name of the company.

Files in this series include an extensive newspaper clipping collection of articles about Rush as well as a transcript and videocassette of an interview with Rush entitled Maurice Rush: 55 Years in the Communist Party.

Series consists of two files, one related to business of the Ad Hoc Committee on British Columbia Native Indian People and Communities, appointed by University of British Columbia President George Pederson in 1983 and co-chaired by Thomas Berger and Verna Kirkness, including correspondence, minutes, reports and associated material, and a second file of material assembled for reference related to the establishment of an institute of native studies at the University.
