Letters, Incoming

Series consists of incoming letters from Conrad Aiken, Brian O’Kill, James Stern, and Wilfrid Lowry, among others. The majority of the incoming letters are from 1973.

Notes From Malcolm

Series consists of notes from Lowry, written on small note cards and scrap paper. Lowry wrote notes to Margerie frequently between 1939 and 1953. The cards often contain love notes to Margerie as well as scraps of poems, small sketches, thoughts, observations, and fragments of what would later become poems.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs and prints of Margerie and Lowry. Photos of Margerie are mostly related to her acting career (head shots, and behind the scenes stills, etc.) and her childhood, though there are several of Lowry as well.

Book Review

Series consists of a copy of a review of Edward Hoagland’s book Notes From the Century Before: A Journal From British Columbia. Some of the notes in question are Margerie’s from the notebooks in the Malcolm Lowry Papers.

Series consists of incoming correspondence from George Sumner Albee, Mabell Bonner (Margerie’s mother), Catherine Carver, Richard Cross, and David Markson. The majority of the incoming letters are from 1958.

Films

Series consists of audiovisual materials organized chronologically. Contents include: interviews with friends and family of the Lowrys and Lowry scholars, documentary films about Lowry’s life and works, footage of a gathering at the Burt home, and a copy of the 1984 film version of Under the Volcano.

Correspondence series

The series consists of correspondence generated by New in his position as professor of English at UBC and as Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The correspondence relates to various subjects, including New's involvement in various professional organizations, requests for references, publishing firms, and correspondence with other academics that New met while attending conferences. Includes general correspondence files, and correspondence files are arranged topically by New with mixed subject file material.

Miscellaneous series

The series consists of general correspondence and includes personal materials, teaching aids, records about a Canadian literature correspondence course taught by New, talks given by New, and other miscellaneous materials he collected.

Poetry series

The series consists of manuscripts, correspondence, organization notes, and records related to poetry authored by New. Works represented in this series include Riverbook and Ocean (2002), Science Lessons (1996), Raucous (1999), Strait Home (1999), Halfway Home in the Rain (1993), Stone/Rain (2001), Night Room (2003), Touching Ecuador (2006), Underwood Log (2004), Along a Snake Fence Riding (2007), The Rope-Maker’s Tale (2009), YVR (2011), New and Selected Poems (2015), Neighbours (2017) as well as assorted individual poems not collected under titles.

Children’s Books series

The series consists of correspondence, drafts, manuscripts, and other records related to works for children authored by New. Books represented include Vanilla Gorilla (1998), Llamas in the Laundry (2002), Dream Helmet (2005), The Year I was Grounded (2009), and Sam Swallow and the Riddleworld League (2013).

Humbird family financial records

Series consists of financial records of Jacob Humbird, John A. Humbird, and Thomas J. Humbird. Includes records concerning the estates of Jacob and John A. Humbird. Series is arranged into the following sub-series: Jacob Humbird estate records, John A. Humbird financial and estate records, and Thomas J. Humbird financial records.

Seaboard Shipping Company Limited records

Series consists of a scrapbook created by John A. Humbird containing documents pertaining to the Seaboard Shipping Company Limited, such as notes to shareholders, and photographs of ships used by the Company. Series also includes a brochure published by the Company pertaining to logging in British Columbia.

Programs

Series consists of records relating to the programs that the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC) has implemented during its existence, notably its language learning program, and oral history and community biography collection program. Records related to IABC programming include: correspondence; language learning material; obituaries; personal and family histories; historical typesetting story notebooks; ephemera and newspaper clippings; and audio cassettes containing the biographies and stories of community members.

Original collections series

Series consists of the original collections acquired and preserved by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC) during its existence.

Series consists of thirteen subseries, which correspond to the creators of the records or the research initiatives surrounding the creation of the records: the Emil Bjarnason collection, Ester Bridge collection, Magnus Eliason collection, Frances Hanson collection, Dora Hatton collection, Keith Hoff collection, Helga Howardson collection, Guðrun Johnson collection, and Lillian Sumarlidason collection, as well as the Point Roberts collection, and the New Iceland Research collection.

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs taken or collected by the Icelandic Archives of British Columbia (IABC). Photographs document events, exhibits, and research initiatives, and some photographs are previous collections acquired by the IABC during its existence.

Notable collections are photographs documenting Sunnybrook (File 46-11, including original collections by Edna Proctor, Dorothea Calverley, Thora Howell, Doug Palsson, Lucile Palsson, and Carol Greenhalgh); photographs taken by the curator of the IABC, Robert Ásgeirsson, organized by subject and community event (Files 15-03 to 15-43); and historical photographs of Hunter Island taken by E.J. Fríðleifson and research completed about the communities on Hunter Island (Files 46-12 to 46-18).

Photographs

Series primarily consists of photographs taken at the Scandinavian Festival 1986, and photographs of Society events. Also included in the series is one audio cassette that accompanied the Scandinavian Festival 1986 slide show created by the Society.

Events and activities

Series consists of records relating to the events organized by the Scandinavian Cultural Society (SCS). Many of the textual records in this series are dedicated to the promotion, publicity, and planning of the Scandinavian Festival 1986. However, the SCS also held Midsummer Festivals and other Scandinavian Fairs after their original purpose was completed in 1986.

Records include programs, news clippings, promotional materials, memos, correspondence, reports, art mock-ups, and guest books. Series also includes videocassettes of the proceedings of the Scandinavian Festival 1986, audio cassettes of some of the speeches made, as well as various videocassettes of other SCS events through the years.

Writings

Series consists of records related to Wong’s writings. Materials include writing assignments completed when he attended creative writing courses at UBC, screenplays, drafts of short stories that were ultimately published in his book Dim Sum Stories: A Chinatown Childhood, and opinion pieces for the Vancouver Sun. Also included are several articles written about Wong Foon Sien, one of the early leaders of the Chinese Benevolent Association in Vancouver, as well as a journalist and labour activist.

Records consist of short stories, university writing assignments, newspaper articles, book proposals, screenplays, biographies, and published works.

Publications

Series consists of newsletters and other published material by the Icelandic Lutheran Church for purposes of reference and dissemination. Records include magazine publications, parish directory, parish newsletters, and newspaper clippings.

Doug Cox research materials

Series consists of Doug Cox’s collecting activity carried out in support of his writing. Points of origin are predominantly the southern interior of British Columbia. Collections acquired are primarily composed of photographic material, secondarily of textual material, with interviews and associated transcripts created to correspond with the main locations and activities of the collection. Contents depict and describe a variety of scenes and settings, primarily concerning industry and infrastructure, family life, city scenes, and landscapes during the first half of the twentieth century. Many photocopies of images exist with annotations by original donor identifying human subjects, their relationships, and their locations.

Doug Cox manuscripts and publications

The series consists of textual works by Doug Cox, occasionally edited by Joyce Cox. Includes curricular materials developed for the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation, short compositions, historical drafts, biographical drafts, proofs for works destined for publication, and materials prepared as a regular column for the Western Producer. Includes 6 scrapbooks of clippings from the Western News Advertiser covering a recurring column contributed by Doug Cox.

Doug Cox photography and videography

Series consists of original still and moving photography attributed to Doug Cox from the 1970s through 2008 in support of his career as author and historian. Frequently, Cox’s images form a time-lapse continuation of the older photographs he collected for research purposes. There are many reprisals of people, buildings, landscapes, and subjects first treated in his acquired research collections. In addition to this, Cox documents many of his interview subjects photographically, and this series in large part complements his corpus of recorded interviews/oral histories and collected manuscripts.
The VHS tapes include recordings of Penticton infrastructure such as the sanitary landfill, water purification plant, recycling depot, as well as the closure of Nickel Plate Mine’s last day of operation in 1996.

Winemaking and viticulture

Series consists of records pertaining to winemaking and viticulture at Quails’ Gate Vineyard Estate and Winery. Series includes both analogue and digital records. Series includes records such as photographs, videos, maps, surveys, and tasting notes.

Management records

Series consists of records that pertain to the management and administration of the Quails’ Gate Vineyard Estate Winery business. Series includes both analog and digital records. Series includes records such as project documents, reports, and meeting minutes.

Promotional and marketing records

Series consists of promotional and marketing records from Quails’ Gate Vineyards Estate Winery. Series includes both analogue and digital records. Series includes records such as wine labels and profiles, promotional ephemera such as brochures and posters, video tapes, as well as photographs of the vineyard and the estate’s accommodations.

Historical

Series consists of records pertaining to the history of the Stewart family as well as records produced through research done on the Allison family. Series include both born digital and digitized records. Records include photographs, newspaper clippings, copies of marriage and birth certificates, and photocopies of correspondence.

Produced plays

Series consists of plays written by Peter Carl Anderson and related documentation leading to and reflective of performance of live theatre. Comprised of scripts, sheet music, rehearsal and production notes, administrative files, publicity, photographs, and audio recordings of performances. Plays covered include Caravan Farm Theatre Productions such as Animal Farm; Bull By The Horns; Caravan Music Revue; Hands Up!; Head Over Heels; Horseplay; Law of the Land; Sleigh Ride Christmas Carol; The Ballad of Weedy Peetstraw; The Blue Horse; and The Coyotes.

Writing

Series consists unpublished writing, including music composition. Also consists of criticism and editorial work. 35 books, with full or partial authorship, editorship, or other association attributed to Peter Carl have been separated from the fonds and catalogued as items. Personal publicity

Series consists of press and media coverage of Peter Carl Anderson in response to his artistic and dramatic outputs. Includes some publicity ephemera, such as production posters and programs. Includes video recordings of Anderson’s activities for communications or publicity purposes. Other records include clippings and tearsheets.
