Research series

Series consists of reports, studies and papers by Duff and others, as well as government publications and policies related to First Nations land claims, treaties and other matters.

W.H. White and D.V. White correspondence

Series is composed of incoming correspondence and drafts and originals of outgoing correspondence to and from William Hale White and/or Dorothy Vernon White. The large majority of files are W.H. White's incoming and outgoing correspondence . Correspondents include W.H. White's literary and other friends, communications with publishers, and with family members. Some files include correspondence with both W .H. White and D.V. White.

White family papers

Series contains correspondence and other material created by or related to W.H. White' s parents, children, and grandchildren, including biographical information about various members of the Hale-White family and correspondence between members of the family and their friends.

Transcripts

Series consists of transcripts of correspondence and other records in the fonds, as well as transcripts of a few items from other sources .

Correspondence

Series consists of 10 letters written by Hughes to various correspondents, including Frederic Stephens, William Holman Hunt, Henry Mogford, and Ellis Wells. Series also includes a DVD of transcriptions of all known extant Arthur Hughes letters in both private and public collections made by Leonard Roberts.

Personal Life

Series consists of records related to Manson's personal life.

This series has been arranged into seven subseries: Manson's education, his involvement with the Presbyterian Church, his social life, agendas and planners, notes regarding speeches he gave, his estate, and his family.

Family Papers series

Series consists of family papers, including original letters to Henry Dunckley. It also includes letters to William Angus, William H. Dunckley and the diaries of Mary E. Angus.

Professional Life series

The series consists of notes, clippings, correspondence, memos, invitations, evaluations, minutes, memorandum, telegraphs, drafts, essays, articles, newspapers, agendas, pamphlets, note cards, reports and plans relating to professional work conducted directly by, attributed to, or contributed by H. Peter Oberlander.

Graphic Works

Series consists predominately of illustrations, comics, and cartoons by du Maurier from his time spent working at "Punch" and "Once a Week" magazines. Common themes included: Victorian society, fashion, and etiquette; social commentary on Britain’s middle class and high society; the bourgeoisie; and the tensions of “Beautymania” and the “New Woman” in the 19th century, among others. Accompanying the illustrations are handwritten texts depicting the scene with a humorous story. The subject matters in these illustrations are commonly human still life drawn in a single pane drawn in muted ink colors like black or brown. This series also includes a watercolor portrait of du Maurier and a print from the January 23, 1896 edition of "Vanity Fair" of du Maurier himself at the drawing bench illustrating for his novel "Trilby".

Colonial documents of British Columbia

Series consists primarily of documents from the colonial era of British Columbia, including material related to early settlers on Vancouver Island, the Fraser River and Cariboo/Yukon gold rushes, and the courts. The bulk of the series consists of correspondence, but also includes commission, coroner’s inquisition, court calendar, deposition, jury list, last will and testament, prospectus, receipt, and subpoena.

Court Documents

Series consists of court documents covering a variety of cases and legal disputes in British Columbia between 1858 and 1891 that represent both major criminal charges as well as minor civil suits. It is comprised of more than 750 case files containing over 1,200 documents relating to such topics as Augustus Pemberton and colonial relations with Chinese and Aboriginal peoples in B.C., possible changes that occurred after the colonies were converged, and the many types of small claims being filed during the period.

Supreme Court of Civil Justice

The Supreme Court of Civil Justice was originally established as the Inferior Court of Civil Justice in 1857 by Governor James Douglas to deal with the increasing number of petty claims in Victoria. The court was renamed in 1860. Series consists of records including writs, testimony, judgements, and other pertinent documents related to various cases. These records were produced by magistrates, defendants, claimants, and other relevant (and in some cases historically significant) parties including the first judge in BC, the first Attorney General, the earliest clergy, businessmen, and other prominent figures from this period in British Columbia's colonial history. The materials in this series represent a firsthand look at the business and legal proceedings from the colony's early justice system.

Doug Cox research materials

Series consists of Doug Cox’s collecting activity carried out in support of his writing. Points of origin are predominantly the southern interior of British Columbia. Collections acquired are primarily composed of photographic material, secondarily of textual material, with interviews and associated transcripts created to correspond with the main locations and activities of the collection. Contents depict and describe a variety of scenes and settings, primarily concerning industry and infrastructure, family life, city scenes, and landscapes during the first half of the twentieth century. Many photocopies of images exist with annotations by original donor identifying human subjects, their relationships, and their locations.

Genealogical work series

Series includes a bound, five-volume set of Dr. Lowe’s memoirs along with a bound single-volume history of the Burpee family by Isaac Burpee. It also includes correspondence (copies and originals) and other genealogical records.

Writings

Series consists of personal letters written by or for du Maurier. Handwritten letters by du Maurier also occasionally have illustrations drawn on them. Several letters also have annotations written by the previous custodian of the fonds. 45 pieces of loose correspondence were donated as well as a framed collage with eleven pieces of correspondence, and a self-portrait in oil (which can be found in the “Graphic Works” series as the framed collage was de-framed during processing). File also includes one piece of a written explanation regarding an illustration that is not present in this fonds.

Photographs

Series consists of two albums and loose photographs of family and friends as well as photographs of Port Simpson, native people in the area, and missionary activities.

Manuscripts and other documents

Series consists of Haldane's personal documents, records from Medical Research Council – Miners' Nystagmus Committee, Admiralty. Medical Department, Tuberculosis Conference, manuscripts of papers written by Haldane and C.G. Douglas, manuscripts of drafts, notes, unpublished lectures and address, reports and correspondence on the use of gas in World War I, and manuscript of unpublished book: <em>Outlines of a vitalistic physiology</em>, by J.S. Haldane.

W.H. White manuscripts

This series is composed of the manuscripts of published and unpublished material written by W. H. White. The notebooks sub-series includes the "Dorothy", "Black", and "White" notebooks, in which W. H. White documents his relationship with D.V. White. For the published materials sub-series, file titles and dates were supplied by D. V. White. With the exception of "Notes on Shelley" and "A Visit to Carlyle" these items were all included in "Last Pages from a Journal". "A Visit to Carlyle" was published in "Pages from a Journal".

Journals

Series consists of journals of George Hills, Bishop of Diocese of British Columbia.

Stamp collection and related records

The Stamp Collection and Related Records series consists of philatelic records and catalogues, correspondence, price lists, and publications. Also included in the series are records related to postal history in general, particularly that of British Columbia.

Rose Family Records series

Series consists of personal records of William Rose and his family and includes correspondence, published materials, and other memorabilia.

Historical records and research subject files

The series consists of historical records acquired by Fleming as well as research subject files he created in his study of British Colombian history. Subjects include the Alaska American/Canadian border dispute, British Columbia settler colonial history, the forestry and timber industry, trade and commerce in the Pacific Northwest, and particularly the Nootka crisis and the expedition of Alessandro Malaspina. Record types include correspondence, indentures, pamphlets, articles, notes, presentation materials, and photographs from Fleming's research related travel.

Photographs series

Series consists of photographs of William Rose, members of his family, and friends and colleagues. Most of the images, except those of Rose, are unidentified.

Correspondence - Emma Douse Crosby

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence with family and friends including incoming correspondence on the death of her husband and outgoing correspondence with her mother during her early years at Port Simpson, 1874-1880.

Bankruptcy cases

The 1858 Gold Rush on the Fraser River in British Columbia brought an influx of miners to the area, resulting in an economic boom for the colonies.
Following the end of the gold rush, however, came a time of financial strain in the 1860s and many individuals suffered personal financial loss. In 1862, a bankruptcy court was established as a formal structure to resolve insolvencies. Series includes documents related to the colonial bankruptcy court including adjudications, affidavits, declaration, deeds, notices, petitions, proofs of debt, receipts, report, statements of account, summons, and wills.

Miscellaneous textual records and photograph

Series consists of various miscellaneous notes, a photograph of unidentified people standing on the shore of a lake, possibly circa 1890, an 1863 newspaper clipping concerning gold prospects in Lillooet, and an 1896 directors' report for The Albion Iron Works Co. Ltd.

Notebooks

Series consists of notebooks kept by Doyle containing fisheries statistics, figures, and other types of information. Includes notebooks containing information on the operations of the Skeena River Commercial Company, and the Namu, Mill Bay, Kimsquit, Kumeon, Port Essington and Port Edward, Bella Coola, Tallheo canneries. Series also includes notes on the British Columbia Packers Association, 1903-1908, and general journals kept by Doyle, 1905 to 1922, containing information on his business dealings and other cannery-related issues. Bollert Family series

Series consists of diaries of Bollert family members, correspondence to and from members of the Bollert family, newspaper clippings relating to members of the Bollert family, and papers relating to the burial of the Bollert family members at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, as well as other miscellaneous documentation. In general, the documents appear to focus specifically on the immediate family of Mary Bollert. Indeed, many of the documents appear to have been collected by Florence Bollert (sometimes referred to as Floy) and L. Grace Bollert, as they are addressed explicitly within correspondence.

Account and Record Books

Series consists of an account book for the Mill Bay Cannery, 1905-1906, as well as books containing catch and packing records. Title based on contents of series.

Photos of events and activities in British Columbia

This series focuses on images of notable events, as well as scenes of everyday life and activity in British Columbia. Events depicted include construction (the building of the Lions Gate Bridge) and destruction (notably a sequence of photographs showing the 1938 fire at CPR Pier D in Vancouver), as well as public gatherings like parades and celebrations, such as the 1936 Golden Jubilee of Vancouver's Chinatown. There are also high-profile visits featuring the Governor-General the Duke of Connaught (1912), and Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) in 1919.

Everyday life photographs focus on work scenes and industry, shipping, pastimes and recreation. These include images of patriotic activities during World War II.

Many of the photographs have provenance or other identifying information written on the back, including the original location of the photograph if it is a copy from another archives or collection. Some photographs are accompanied by photocopies of newspaper coverage and other information on the event pictured.

Document

Series consists of documents to Thomas Crosby and Emma Douse commending them on various achievements.

Textual records

The series contains textual records pertaining to the Klondike Gold Rush. The records reflect major activities such as commerce, travel, mining, and tourism in the Klondike. Legal records documenting the mining boom, including mining claims, grants, stock certificates, and court documents are present throughout the series. Records of individual miners and mining companies are included in the series as well as those of prevalent government bodies, including the office of the Gold Commissioner and the Department of the Interior. In addition to these activities, the series also reflects various works of individuals who journeyed north to the Klondike during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as promotional and informational material developed by travel and outfitting agencies. The series also contains records related to the Lind family’s personal connection to the Yukon, including the unpublished account of John G. Lind’s trip to the Klondike.

Significant record types include correspondence, receipts and checks, pamphlets and printed volumes, advertisements, postcards, diaries and journals, newspapers and newspaper clippings, sheet music, theatre programs, as well as guidebooks and souvenir books

Illustration examples

Series consists of a scrapbook of illustrations by Hughes clipped from various publications, and a Christmas poem ("The Shepherd's Gifts") illustrated by Hughes; as well as a print on linen illustrated by Hughes ("Cotton Famine Relief Committee").

Family History series

This series consists of materials written by or relating to Margaret herself. These include personal journals, sketchbooks, correspondence, graduation and varsity sports photographs from the University of Toronto and a small amount of campaign material relating to her time with the Toronto Board of Education.

Biographical information

Series consists of a file relating to the births and deaths in the family and a list of highlights in the career of Rev. Thomas Crosby. For further biographical information, see clippings in box 3-1.

Family correspondence

Series consists of correspondence records from the Whitham, Clements, and Zoellner families. Correspondence includes those that were received by various family members as well as those that were sent among family member. Series includes records such as letters, postcards, official documents, and ephemera. Some photos are pasted into pages of text and have not yet been separated. All photos, even those associated with correspondence files have been numbered as part of the family photographs series (12.2).

Estate records

Series consists of records relating to the Trutch family estate, including records concerning real estate owned by the family, records regarding the estate of John Trutch, and copies of John Trutch's marriage and death announcements .

Portraits of Persons in British Columbia

The series consists of portrait photographs of persons in British Columbia from 1870-1960. Portrait photographs were originally created by a number of photographers, including P.L. Okamura, Hannah Maynard, and S.A. Spencer. Photographs created after 1880 tend to be the products of amateur or street photographers, and as a result, individuals depicted therein are in informal attire. Most of the individuals depicted in the photographs are not identified. The predominant focus of the series is on representations of white settler society—particularly children--though photographs of Indigenous persons and persons of colour are included as well. There are also several photograph of Chinese Canadians in Victoria and Vancouver.

Moogk’s original physical order is preserved in the series. Record types include photographs--particularly tintypes, cartes de visite, and studio cabinet photographs; handwritten notes by Moogk outlining Vancouver photographers operative from 1858-1920; newspaper clippings related to Vancouver photographers; and cards from street photographers.

Nan Cheney Photographs

The photographs, negatives, and slides (the slides are duplicate images of the photos, with one or two exceptions) BC1849/1-86 are primarily images of Emily Carr and her artwork.

The slides BC1849/90-158 are primarily informal images taken by Cheney of her numerous Canadian artist friends, as well as slides portraying various U.B.C. dignitaries and other well-known Canadians. These date from 1951-1969 and include a section (numbered BC1849/149(a-f)-158) that is devoted to Dr.’s Ethel and Wallace Wilson.

Photographs numbered BC1849/159-200 are mainly photographs of Nan Cheney’s many friends and acquaintances, as well as photographs of art work, including her own. Also there is a series of photographs which record a sculpture show at U.B.C. in 1956 (BC1849/196a-1).

Miscellaneous letters and papers

Series consists of letters, laboratory notes, and papers related to Otto Cohnheim’s scientific studies. There is also correspondence between members of the Cohnehim family who are not either Otto Cohnheim or Eva Kestner. This includes letters between other family members, including Otto’s parents, and mother-in-law.

Statistics

Series consists of various fisheries statistics gathered by Doyle. Includes statistics for individual British Columbia canning, packing, and other fishing industry companies, as well as general statistics regarding various subjects.

Biographical series

Series consists of Creelman genealogical information (wills, deeds, death notices etc.); news clippings; awards and corresponding ephemera; diplomas/certificates; and yearbooks. The audio tapes are available from the archives vault AT 3165 & 3166.
