The Pocket Desert fonds

The fonds consists of documents and records that would go on to compose The Pocket Desert radio documentary, which aired on CBC Radio’s Ideas, produced by Gayle Cornish, and co-created by Dr. Jeannette Armstrong and Dr. Geoffrey Scudder. The documentary concerns the unique desert climate and ecology in and around Osoyoos, British Columbia, and the significance of the land to Syilx Okanagan people. The fonds is organized into two series: 13.1 Production Files and 13.2 Broadcast Files.

Simpson Family fonds

The fonds consists of two separate streams of documentation. The first consists of documents, photographs, and artifacts pertaining to the operations of a succession of sawmills and wood manufacturing plants founded by Stanley Merriam Simpson) and assumed by his son, Horace B. Simpson in the Okanagan area.
The second stream consists of the materials generated by Sharron J. Simpson, a Kelowna author, publisher, and activist. Sharron J. Simpson's records within this aggregation are primarily in relation to legal proceedings against the City of Kelowna in pursuit of the maintenance of the Simpson Covenant, which limits use of waterfront land on a former mill site sold by S.M. Simpson to the City under restrictive terms of sale in 1946. In the 2000s, the City sought to dissolve the Covenant; Sharron J. Simpson founded a society to challenge this initiative.
In total fonds consists of approximately 2,642 photographs, in various forms, including some duplicates. Records provide documentation of legal proceedings, finances, substantial mill operations, safety initiatives, administration, civic engagement, publicity, and labour relations relating to mill business, general family research, and writing samples. Artifacts include exemplars of production and souvenir materials.

Photographs

The series consists of slide transparencies from ca. 1930 through 1992, depicting Princeton and environs, including Allenby, Ashnola, Tulameen, Hedley, and Coquihalla. Some depictions of mines, or the areas of mining activities, including Nickel Plate, Coalmont, and Brenda. Featuring predominant coverage of the outdoors, the series includes photographs of many area mountains, creeks, and lakes. Scenes of recreation, including fairs, parades, and rodeos are also available. These slides are mainly attributed to Roy Thomas.

Prints feature photographs of members of the Allison family, with item-level descriptions under development.

George Meeres collection

Collection consists of professional photographs captured by George Albert Meeres. Geographies documented centre on the Okanagan, Shuswap, and Thompson regions with predominant coverage of Vernon, BC. A suite of photographs within the subseries provides coverage of the Armstrong Fall Fair, later termed the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) during the 1940s and early 1950s. Series consists of records pertaining to the British Columbia Women’s Institute (BCWI), administered at the provincial level. Activities represented include convention planning and delivery, governance and decision-making, financial management, publications and communications, crafts and fine arts, activism and lobbying, and educational initiatives. Across activities are diaries, artifacts, and photographs.

British Columbia Women's Institute Districts

Series consists of records pertaining to various individual Women’s Institute districts and branches forming regional representation of the British Columbia Women’s Institute. Records in this series mostly pertain to the areas of finance, governance, activism, and correspondence. Other significant records include photographs, artifacts, ephemera, as well as arts and crafts. Series is arranged into files according to creating body.

Research files

Series consists of records pertaining to survey and compilation projects undertaken by Women’s Institute committees, informal working groups, and individual members in the pursuit of BCWI historiography. Two publications were released as a result of this research: 100 Years of BC Women’s Institutes (history) and 100 Women (biography). Series is arranged into files, each pertaining to an individual (biography) or branch (history).

Records in this fonds consist predominantly of administrative records as well as the compiled research materials pertaining to the Women’s Institutes and notable figures within.

The fonds also includes documentation of the BCWI’s intersections with the FWIC and the ACWW. Fonds is arranged into five series: 1) Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC); 2) Associated Countrywomen of the World (ACWW); 3) British Columbia Women’s Institutes (BCWI); 4) BCWI Districts; 5) Research files.

British Columbia Grapegrowers’ Association fonds

Fonds consists of certificate of incorporation, board meeting minutes and those of some constituent committees, annual reports, education, marketing, and outreach materials, and digital photography of experimentation sites extracted from optical disc. Print photographs depict locations relevant to the Becker Project and a group portrait. The fonds contains reference material that predates the formation of the corporate creator.

Four published books arrived with the fonds; these have been separated and catalogued – please see bibliography for details.

Dorothy and W.J. Zoellner home movies

Series consists of Dorothy and W.J. Zoellner’s family home movies. All the movies were captured on 8mm film. Home movies depict various family events such as school events, family vacations, weddings, and new babies.

Daisy Clara Millar letters

Subcollection consists of two letters totaling twelve pages dated October and November 1955 addressed to Enid with one, possibly both, being signed “Mummsy.” The letters narrate the writer’s experiences in the early days of the Russian invasion of Austrian Galicia in 1914-15. The author’s family was directly on the route of the invasion and retaliation, and her account reflects details both on the ground and the political and military events of the time. Although written 40 years after the events, the letters seem remarkably clear and detailed. The letters appear to be “original” blue carbons, with some manuscript annotations both in the author’s and another’s hand.

Associated Country Women of the World

Series consists of records pertaining to the BCWI’s intersections with the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), with which the BCWI was affiliated.. Records in this series include photographs, publications, and some ephemera created by the ACWW. Other records in this series relate to various conventions hosted by the ACWW and affiliates held worldwide, including but not limited to where the BCWI was represented.

File contains correspondence, a BCWI life membership card, a handwritten account of a member's experiences being a part of the BCWI during World War I, and the papers and correspondence of Mrs. R. W. Chalmers.

File contains a booklet on Laws for Women and Children in British Columbia and an invitation from Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board to the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Margaret Watt.
